SCM is looking for a recent graduate to spend a year working with us to help us to continue to build on the work of our successful Faith in Action project. 

Run in partnership with Project Bonhoeffer, a small charitable trust, the project began in 2012 with a vision that Christian students in Britain would have a greater awareness and understanding of Bonhoeffer’s radical approach to faith and discipleship, and its implications for Christian living in the modern world. 

The project has helped to run over a dozen campaigns from Food Poverty to Peace, and had an immeasurable impact on thousands of students through blogs, resources, and relationships. All of this is bringing to light many ‘Bonhoeffers’ of today negotiating the implications on Christian living in the world.

In 2021, we began developing the Faith in Action project as a graduate scheme, employing two graduates a year to work on the project; one to lead on theology bringing a depth of learning and theological refection, and the other to be a campaigns lead, taking us always back out into the world to make a difference. Now moving forward as a combined theology and community organising role, the Faith in Action Project Worker will equip our members, and students beyond SCM, to become theologians and campaigners, putting their faith into action to change the world.

We are looking for a passionate graduate to join the project for the 2026-27 academic year.

In this role, you will be a theologian to make other theologians, and will provide the framework for students to be able to reflect theologically on their life and modern Christian living. You will be responsible for growing the breadth of SCM’s Faith in Action resources, and discovering new ways of connecting with the current membership via the trends of social media or engaging in face-to-face reflections. An activist to make other activists, you will coordinate social action for SCM, engaging the membership in social justice projects that maximise our impact in society and the world.

You will work to build relationships between SCM communities and members to equip students with the skills they need to become faith-filled agents of social and political change and lead them in theological reflection to discern their involvement in local and national campaigns. You will also work to develop relationships with other Christian social justice and campaigning organisations to create opportunities for students to put their faith into action. In all of this, you will be supported by our small but perfectly-formed team, who will share your values and fully understand your aims in this project.

The role will require some travel within Britain, as well as semi-regular visits to the office in Birmingham, which may also include an overnight stay. All reasonable expenses for travel and accommodation will be reimbursed. Some evening and weekend work may be required for which time off in lieu will be given.

Salary: £30,000, per annum, pro rata (£11,997 per annum actual for 2 days per week)

About You and The Role

The Artist/Producer is responsible for the planning, preparation and delivery of Modern Art Oxford’s early years projects including our co-learning, sensory play project Make Play, holiday workshops and welcome tours and activities for primary schools, charities, and community groups.

Modern Art Oxford’s early years programme recognises and celebrates children, as active participants in our shared society. Established in 2017, Make Play is one of the core strands of our programmes for children aged 6 months to 5 years. It provides a child-led creative space for babies and children to explore, play and learn in a safe and stimulating environment.

The Artist/Producer takes a lead role in developing activities in response to the temporary exhibitions programme, working closely with the Curator Communities, Practice & Participation to ensure a holistic and well-curated offer throughout the year.

Modern Art Oxford’s early years programme engages more than 1,000 children, parents, and carers each year through our regular sessions at the gallery and offsite with local partners.

Key responsibilities

• Workshop and Programme Delivery

The successful candidate will have a minimum of three years’ experience of working in Early Years education, strong understanding of Early Years pedagogy, child-centred and inclusive practice, experience working with artists, facilitators, or creative practitioners and experience of delivering projects and workshops in art galleries and museums with demonstrable experience of working with diverse materials and media.

They will have confidence managing multiple projects, partnerships, and delivery locations, be self-motivated and collaborative with excellent communication and relationship building skills, good IT, administrative and organisational skills.

The ability to work weekends, knowledge of equality, diversity, and inclusion practices and procedures and a DBS check and training in safeguarding are also required. First Aid training is desirable.

About You and The Role

The Communities, Practice & Participation Coordinator supports the administration, delivery, and evaluation of Modern Art Oxford’s community-facing participation and exhibition programme, involving a wide range of groups.

Working as part of the Communities, Practice & Participation team at the gallery, you will be a key support in the coordination of our participatory programme and live events, the installation of displays in Modern Art Oxford’s Ground Floor gallery and Studio, and assisting the delivery of workshops, as required. The Coordinator is also responsible for the administration and archiving of Modern Art Oxford’s community-facing participation programme.

This position requires a proactive, detail-oriented approach, to ensure appropriate and ongoing communication across departments to realise projects successfully, within budget, and to the highest standard. You will be trusted to use your initiative in problem-solving and encouraged to contribute ideas. This job is an integral role in the team, aimed at an early-career arts professional.

The Coordinator, Communities, Practice & Participation is line-managed by the Curator, Communities, Practice & Participation and supports the Head of Communities, Practice & Participation and other CPP colleagues.

Primary Objectives

• To support the Curator of Communities, Practice & Participation in the planning and delivery of temporary exhibitions sharing our participatory projects across our Ground Floor, including our Ground Floor Gallery and Studio.
• To support the CPP team in collating, administrating and disseminating all information required for the timely and accurate delivery of all aspects of the CPP programme with early years, young people, and adult communities.
• To assist in the delivery and administration of the workshop programme as requested by the Curator of Communities, Practice & Participation.

Key Accountabilities

Ground Floor Gallery

• To support the planning and delivery of the Communities, Practice, and Participation exhibitions Programme

The Studio and Participatory Programme

• To support with the administration and coordination of the Studio and related participatory programme

Finance

• To support the CPP team with accurate and up-to-date financial administration

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an enthusiasm for contemporary art and a willingness to gain a broad range of curatorial skills and experiences. They will have strong administration skills, with demonstrable experience, a proactive mindset and the ability to be flexible. They will have a keen attention to detail and an ability to prioritise and deliver multiple strands of work to deadlines. Good planning and communication skills are essential in this busy, demanding and exciting environment. They will be comfortable working as part of a team, and sharing responsibilities and tasks where necessary.
