About FareShare
FareShare is the UK’s national network of charitable food redistributors, made up of 18 independent organisations. Together, we take good quality surplus food from right across the food industry and get it to nearly 9,500 frontline charities and community groups.
The food we redistribute is nutritious and good to eat. It reaches charities across the UK, including school breakfast clubs, older people’s lunch clubs, homeless shelters, and community cafes. Every week we provide enough food to create almost a million meals for vulnerable people.
Every year, more than three million tonnes of food go to waste in the UK, enough for 7 billion meals. Meanwhile, the cost-of-living crisis is driving millions into food insecurity. FareShare has a plan to help tackle the cost-of-living crisis using England’s surplus food.
We are fortunate to benefit from the support of major retailers, the media, sports ambassadors and a groundswell of public engagement. As a result, there has never been a more exciting time to join an organisation at the heart of public consciousness.
FareShare’s Strategy & Vision
Vision: We have the vision of a UK where “No good food goes to waste”.
Mission: To use surplus, fit for consumption, food to feed those who are vulnerable in the UK by supporting front line charitable organisations that tackle the cause and not just the symptoms of food poverty.
Our Purpose: We are doers. We are a community. We change lives.
Our Values: Passion – for our cause and the challenge that lies ahead
Ambition – to go the extra mile and drive the change that must happen
Respect – for ourselves, each other, our volunteers, our partners and our beneficiaries
Collaboration – it’s only by working with others that we can be stronger
Focus – on providing the best service possible so that we deliver and achieve the most for our clients/customers.
The role
FareShare’s Food Team works with the UK food industry to rescue as much surplus food as possible. Our ability to build strong and meaningful partnerships with food businesses is central to our long-term strategy and our continued ability to support charities with much needed food. FareShare have ambitious food volume targets and must remain agile and innovative to continue to access and redistribute food.
As the Programme Manager – FLEX and Food Intervention you will be central to this ongoing agility; leading and delivering important projects which improve our flexibility and offer to the food industry. This role will be primarily delivering our Food Life Extension Project (FLEX).
The FLEX project is a pioneering UK project exploring ways to manage the inconsistency of surplus food supplies and to prevent gluts of produce going to waste.
THE PROBLEM - FareShare has always faced a challenge during UK harvest periods of being offered more of a particular food than our charities can possibly use in time, farmers and growers must estimate yields and with a fluctuating climate this can often lead to surplus.
THE SOLUTION - We are taking short life foods, particularly produce, and canning, freezing, juicing and cooking them turning them into long life sources of nutrition for our charities. We aim to increase the volume of accepted produce, expanding our year-round offering to communities and create a national store of food which can be drawn upon when fresh supplies are low.
The Julia and Hans Rausing Trust have supported this initiative with a generous donation over 3 years. Our ambition is to use this funding to build long term sustainable solutions for FareShare to accept these gluts of produce to ensure year-round support for communities. The project has been running small scale trials for the first phase, and we are seeking a dynamic and entrepreneurial individual to take this project into the next phase, delivering a significant step change in the volume of food rescued over the upcoming UK harvests.
You will work closely with Account Managers in the Food Team to ensure that projects align with wider partnership plans, whilst being understood and engaged with by all relevant stakeholders. Furthermore, for the FLEX project you will be central in our continued reporting to the Julia and Hans Rausing Trust on how their generous donation has helped save previously wasted food and supported communities.
Excellent organisational and project management skills are an essential part of this role; you will need to co-ordinate and lead several, often complex projects concurrently. You will need to ensure that all projects have clear timelines and measurables, and that any key risks are identified, communicated and mitigated. Timelines are particularly important with the fluctuating and short dated nature of the produce we seek to rescue.
We are looking for a dynamic and confident individual who can bring creativity and initiative to The Food team and project programmes to move from initial trial phase through the development of the governance and blueprint, and into embedded business as usual operations. This is an opportunity to play a key part in fundamentally changing the way the UK food industry manages and interacts with harder-to-reach surplus and gluts of produce whilst supporting millions of people in the process.
Main areas of responsibility
FLEX Project

- Collaborate with FareShare's senior management to support in the development of a holistic strategy and operating model for the FLEX programme.
- Define clear targets, goals, and deliverables for the programme.
- Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to effectively publicise the programme and expand the project network.
Partner Engagement & Onboarding
- Working closely with the account managers in the Food Team, particularly within Produce to actively identify and engage with new and existing FareShare partners to participate in FLEX.

- Work across a range of teams to ensure that projects are delivered successfully and are well documented, measured and monitored.

We are undergoing an exciting period of development, which includes bringing our work with community volunteers, schools and groups to the heart of what we do.
In 2023 we launched the National Education Nature Park - a Department for Education funded programme empowering young people to take action on the environment as part of new measures designed to put climate change and sustainability at the heart of education. This is a GLA funded role as part of the wider DfE funded programme.

*About National Education Nature Park
National Education Nature Park is a partnership project led by the Natural History Museum, working alongside the Royal Horticultural Society, the Royal Society, Royal Geographical Society, Learning through Landscapes, Manchester Metropolitan University and additional supporting partners.
The National Education Nature Park engages children, young people and their educators with nature, supporting young people in England to play a driving role in mapping and monitoring biodiversity on their grounds using citizen science and, critically, taking action to enhance it.
From creating pollinator friendly habitats where biodiversity can thrive, to creating planting schemes that support climate resilience. The project will showcase what can be achieved on the Education estate.
The Nature Park will also provide opportunities for young people to take part in community science, identifying local impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss and developing key skills to solve these problems.

About Us
The Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts (RSWT) is the central charity which supports the federation of 46 independent Wildlife Trusts working for nature’s recovery across the UK, Alderney and the Isle of Man. The Wildlife Trusts’ vision is of a thriving natural world, with abundant wildlife and healthy natural habitats playing a valued role in addressing the climate and ecological emergencies, and everyone inspired to take action for nature’s recovery.
Collectively, The Wildlife Trusts have more than 900,000 members, employ 3,500 staff, look after over 2,300 nature reserves, operate 123 visitor and education centres and own 29 working farms. The role of RSWT is to ensure a strong voice for wildlife at a UK level and to provide strategic leadership, support and development for The Wildlife Trusts. We provide shared expertise in areas such as climate change, digital fundraising, nature-based solutions, policy and safeguarding. We facilitate UK-wide communities of practice to share learning and replicate successful approaches so that together we are more than the sum of our parts. We support the individual Wildlife Trusts to be a strong force for nature in their local areas and to work together to achieve even greater impact as a collective.
The Wildlife Trusts are on a mission to bring about a people-powered nature and climate recovery by empowering people to take meaningful action for nature, and to create an inclusive society where nature matters to everyone, everywhere. We are ambitious in our desire not just to slow, but to reverse the declines in nature. Together we have developed a bold, new collective strategy which outlines our vision and the actions we will take to restore nature over the next eight years.
Central to our strategy are our three goals which set out what we are striving to achieve by 2030 in pursuit of our vision of a thriving natural world. Goal 1 is to put nature into recovery with abundant, diverse wildlife and natural processes creating wilder land and seascapes where people and nature thrive. Goal 2 is to inspire people to take action for nature and climate, resulting in better decision-making for the environment at both local level and across the four UK nations. And Goal 3 is to enable nature to play a central and valued role in helping to address local and global problems, such as by helping tackle climate change and supporting wellbeing and education.
Achieving these ambitious objectives means that we must develop new ways of working which increase the scale and impact of our work. Therefore, we have embarked on a programme of strategic transformations that are essential to achieving our goals, and which will result in a stronger and more effective Wildlife Trust movement for the long term. RSWT is leading the transformation programme across The Wildlife Trusts including in community organising, equality, diversity and inclusion, and funding nature’s recovery. The Wildlife Trusts have existed for over 100 years thanks to a strong membership base and traditional fundraising activities.
The Wildlife Trusts are committed to applying for licences in England and Wales for wild beaver releases, at scale, alongside community consultation, so that beavers can be successfully returned to all major river catchments. To lead this new exciting and ambitious project, we are seeking a dedicated individual to turn this vision into reality by working with Wildlife Trusts to identify opportunities for wild release across England and Wales, coordinate and directly support participating Wildlife Trusts and others to submit licence applications and support community and stakeholder engagement.
With the nature and climate crisis intensifying, wildlife recovery is essential and for this we need to see the return of some of Britain’s lost keystone species. For rivers and wetlands, the most important of these are beavers. Beavers are critical to restoring the natural function of rivers and wetlands with numerous benefits to society – not least natural flood management. By working in partnership, we want to support communities to live alongside these industrious mammals, which will play a crucial role in wetland wildlife recovery.
The Wildlife Trusts have been at the forefront of piloting the release of beavers in enclosures to understand their ecological impacts. We have also led licensed wild beaver releases at Knapdale in Scotland and in Devon. The benefits and impacts of beavers are now well understood and we now need to see beavers return fully to our freshwater systems. Our aspiration is for beavers to return to all the main rivers systems of England and Wales, as part of a bigger vision for unpolluted freshwaters with wildlife restored. In turn, this recovery of nature will lead to lower water treatment costs and reduced flooding.
About You
You will be an enthusiastic individual with great relationship management skills, excellent communication skills and possess an in-depth knowledge of species reintroduction programmes and beaver ecology.
You will be highly organised, collaborative, assertive and experienced project manager adept at keeping projects and budgets on track delivering against expectations. You will be a diplomatic communicator, able to facilitate and build relationships with a range of stakeholders.
You will understand the needs of the Wildlife Trusts and the context in which they operate.
The Wildlife Trusts value passion, respect, trust, integrity, pragmatic activism and strength in diversity. Whilst we are passionate in promoting our aims, we are not judgemental and are inclusive. We particularly encourage applications from people who are underrepresented within our sector, including people from minority backgrounds and people with disabilities. We are committed to creating a movement that recognises and truly values individual differences and identities.
RSWT take our Safeguarding responsibilities extremely seriously. Please look at the website to read our commitment statement.
As a Disability Confident employer, we are committed to offering an interview to anyone with a disability that meets all the essential criteria for the post. Please let us know if you require any adjustments to make our recruitment process more accessible.
