We’re looking for a new Community Rail Support Officer based in southern England and the Midlands, to support our network of community rail partnerships (CRPs) and station adoption groups.
About us
Community Rail Network is a not-for-profit organisation, working across Britain, supporting a growing ‘community rail’ movement, which helps communities get the most from their railways, promotes sustainable and inclusive travel, coordinates volunteering and place-making, and brings people together.
Community rail is made up of 75 community-based partnership organisations, and around 1,200 station friends volunteer groups and other community-led initiatives around Britain. Their activities range from creative projects for young people, to advising train operators on service improvements, to building travel confidence with families and disabled people, to biodiversity projects at stations, to promoting greener travel and tourism by rail.
Our enthusiastic team of 22 works mainly from home in different locations, but we come together regularly in person and online. We work collaboratively to advise our members, provide training, events and resources, run campaigns, and champion community rail and its insights via decision-makers and the media. About this role
The purpose of this role is to provide support and advice to community rail partnerships and groups in the South of England and Midlands, on working effectively and delivering maximum benefit to their communities and railways.
You’ll be comfortable engaging and advising local groups and communities to extend existing and set up new initiatives, and to reach wider audiences with an evidence-led, place-based approach. As well as supporting local groups, you’ll work closely with the rail industry, and wider third and public sector partners to ensure collaboration and shared success.
Main responsibilities
- Provide direct support and advice to CRPs and their officers, and other community rail groups in the region. This includes responding to queries and requests, passing on specialist queries to other members of the team, and providing proactive support through our accreditation review process and as set out in our plans;
- Support the development of skills, confidence and effectiveness across the network of CRPs and station groups, helping them to increase their positive social, environmental and economic impact, including through referral to our training, events and resources;
- Support the development of emerging community rail partnerships, station friend groups and community-led stations and railway-related projects in the region;
- Helping our members to work effectively with rail, transport, local government and community partners, supporting effective relationship building and showing positive leadership and insights on community rail within the region;
- Work with the Support Manager on delivery and monitoring of our grant schemes, and support CRPs and groups in the region to apply, deliver successfully and report back on funded work;
- Gather and share examples, feedback and insights from our members across the region, to facilitate best practice sharing and confidence across community rail and to feed into our communications, resources, events and public affairs work;
- As a member of the Community Rail Network team, participate and contribute to our wider work as relevant, such as Community Rail Week, our annual conference and Awards.
Skills, competencies and experience
- Skills in in supporting community engagement projects; an understanding of and confidence in using community engagement, local communications, project planning and evaluation techniques
- Interpersonal skills and the ability to work confidently with stakeholders at all levels and facilitate positive discussion; articulate and assertive
- Excellent writing and presentational skills
- Awareness of sustainable transport and social inclusion, and an appreciation of the importance of rail, sustainable travel and mobility to communities
- A demonstrable ability to manage time effectively and juggle a range of activities in an organised and professional manner;

- IT literate with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, the internet and social media
Other information
- This post is home-based, but with regular travel (including overnight stays) within the south of England and Midlands, and nationally for team meetings
- The Community Rail Support Officer reports to the Support Manager within the Support and Development team
- Hours are 37 hours per week. A degree of flexibility and out-of-hours working (evenings and weekends) will be required, together with some travel and overnight absences
- This is a permanent position and includes a probationary period of three months from the date of appointment

The post-holder will support the Financial Controller in the day-to-day delivery of CSE’s finance function, in compliance with appropriate accounting standards and practices.

Pay and conditions
- The role is full-time (37.5 hours per week).
- The salary for the role will be £25,953 - £31,087 (starting salary will depend on skills and experience).

Specific responsibilities
An applicant appointed to the role will be expected to:
- Process invoices and payments, issuing sales invoices, accounts receivable and managing aged debtors and creditors.
- Cash entries into Sage Accounting.
- Process CSE staff expense claims.
- Managing petty cash, cheques and bank deposits.
- Credit card processing and checking.
- Assist with the Purchase order system as required.
- Assist in the preparation of monthly management accounts as instructed by the Financial Controller.
- Maintain up to date knowledge of Sage accounting and of relevant accounting standards and practices, tax regulations and other relevant statutory changes, particularly those relevant to charities.
- Be familiar and competent with project finances and budgets to understand the financial position of projects to support in the provision of timely financial data to project managers as required.
Essential attributes for this role include:
- Maths & English GCSE/O-Level at a minimum C or equivalent.
- Experience of using SAGE accounting software on a day-to-day basis.
- Working knowledge of accounting standards and practices, VAT HMRC regulations in England, or a willingness to learn.
- A commitment to CSE’s work and charitable mission.
- Excellent abilities with Office Products (Excel, word etc.,) and Sage accounting software.

Westonbirt, The National Arboretum, is one of the finest collections of temperate trees in the world. Its 600 acres is recognised as a Grade 1 landscape of national importance and includes ancient woodland and semi-natural grassland. Since 1956 it has been managed by the Forestry Commission (operating as Forestry England) to meet our mission 'to connect people with trees to improve the quality of life'. Our future vision is to be ‘a world leader in trees, inspiring people through education conservation, education and participation’. We will achieve this by building on our existing objectives that cover science, learning, wellbeing, volunteering and recreation.
The arboretum is a significant regional visitor attraction with over 550,000 visits annually, onsite businesses generate a turnover in excess of £6m and the arboretum makes an estimated contribution to the local economy of over £23 million. The tree collection itself is complemented and supported by high-quality visitor facilities, catering, retail and a range of events; particularly a 4 night concert series as part of Forest Live, a 12 night Christmas lights event and sporting activities. In the past decade a £7m redevelopment project has transformed the visitor experience with a new Welcome Building and car parking in 2014 and the addition in 2016 of the award winning STIHL Treetop Walkway and Wolfson Tree Management Centre. The arboretum has been accredited with a Visit England Gold Award three years running.
What will the successful candidate be doing?
This role will lead marketing and communications activity across a diverse range of channels and audiences driving new and repeat visits to the arboretum and our events through creative campaigns. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to deliver the commercial aspects of the role while also inspiring people through the promotion of our good causes of conservation, education and participation.
This is an exciting opportunity to work at a national heritage leisure attraction leading marketing and communications activity across a diverse range of channels and audiences driving new and repeat visits to the arboretum and our events through creative campaigns. Job description
Key Work Areas
· A full oversight of marketing, public relations and social media. Supporting the team to seek to develop on existing platforms and set achievable targets.
· Support the team to be the media contact for Westonbirt and handle national and regional media enquiries.
· Manage the production of creative marketing campaigns for events, seasons and our good causes. Collaborate with other teams to identify key messages and themes for campaigns.
· Work with the national team to market Forest Live concerts and our new Christmas at Westonbirt event. Lead on the production of marketing materials and local partnerships with retail and tourism outlets.
· Work closely with our Friends Charity to align messages across our channels including on the editorial board of the Westonbirt Magazine to include relevant content, ensure messages are clear and the content is on brand. Proofread as required.
· Manage the Forestry England brand; making sure teams are aware how to use the Forestry England logo and Westonbirt name.
· Support the team in filming and photography requests and planning content creation for our campaigns.

About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Brand, Content and Storytelling team to manage the Sustrans UK-wide social media channels.
As the Social Media Officer, you will work across platforms such as LinkedIn, X (formally Twitter), Instagram and YouTube. You will work closely with the Storytelling Officers and Media Officers to adapt relevant content to suit different channels and audiences in line with our strategic goals.
You will create and share content that drives engagement, increases brand awareness and inspires followers to take an action, considering equality, diversion, and inclusion at all times. You will work to our brand and house style guidelines, producing content that supports Sustrans’ campaigning, fundraising and policy influencing work.

About you
You should have experience of using social media scheduling to strategically share and inform content creation across multiple channels to increase reach and engagement.
You will also have the ability to produce compelling and engaging copy for social media, as well as having excellent editing and proofreading skills. We ask that also have graphic creation skills such as infographics and digital visual assets, and be able to create small-scale multimedia assets such as Reels.

Nature’s Recovery Officer (Pollinators)
B-Lines are an imaginative and beautiful solution to the problem of the loss of flowers and pollinators. The B-Lines are a series of ‘insect pathways’ running through our countryside and towns, along which we are restoring and creating a series of wildflower-rich habitat stepping stones. They link existing wildlife areas together, creating a network, like a railway, that will weave across the UK.
Avon Wildlife Trust has been working with Buglife (the insect conservation charity) on the B-Lines approach since 2014, enabling us to target work to create continuous swathes of wildlife-rich habitat.
Over the past ten years we have been worked with a wide variety of private landowners and have delivered significant ecological enhancements across the region. This includes the restoration of over 170ha of wildflower-rich grassland and several nature-friendly orchards.
The next phase of B-Lines will focus on the West Mendips, between AWT’s reserves of Folly Farm and Browne’s Folly, with ambitions to scale up and expand this work. As the Nature’s Recovery Officer, you will work with farmers, landowners and communities to grow the network of habitats between these reserves. To ensure climate resilience, you will work on a variety of priority habitats including grasslands, hedgerows, planting in-filed trees and carrying out improvements to woodland edges, all of which are key to the survival of pollinating species.
As the Nature’s Recovery Officer you will:
· Support habitat improvement works on our reserves within the project area.
· Proactively identify sites, providing advice to farmers, landowners and communities, so that they can take action for nature by creating or improving nectar-rich habitats.
· Develop and lead volunteer opportunities, guided by the needs of the landowners and communities you are working with.
· Be supported by the experts at Buglife, who will provide technical advice and training, and ensure that the project is linked to the wider national B-Lines initiative and targeted species recovery where appropriate.

The Research Assistant (Social Research) will use social science methods and approaches to deliver evidenced-based and impactful work. The role is likely to cut across several work areas covered by the Research and Analysis (R&A) team including heat decarbonisation, building retrofit, affordable warmth, fairness in the energy transition, energy policy and local area energy planning.

Specific responsibilities

Job Purpose
We are seeking a Finance Officer, based in our office in Newquay, Cornwall. The Finance Officer will provide financial, HR and administrative support to the Director of Finance and Administration and wider team. The Finance Officer role handles confidential matters and manages a varied workload, working independently to meet deadlines and accomplish tasks. The role will handle all day-to-day finance processing for the UK office, whilst also operating as part of a global finance team which increases the scope and interest of the role.

Role Overview
Ø Responsibility for all day-to-day finance processing and system entries across accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash, fixed assets, intercompany and other balance sheet accounts.
Ø Preparation of weekly vendor pay run, ensuring correct documentation and coding.
Ø Initial review of all expense and credit card entries to ensure correct documentation and coding.
Ø Preparation of all journal entries and balance sheet schedules for month end close, in accordance with global timetable, for review by Director of Finance and Administration.
Ø Support UK team to ensure all costs are covered by contract and relevant approval.
Ø Assist with monthly payroll processes and staff onboarding tasks.

Candidate Requirements
Ø Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
Ø There is some flexibility in required financial qualifications, but we anticipate that the role would best suit AAT level 4.
Ø Practical work experience in a variety of finance roles is essential, ideally bringing experience from both small and large finance team environments.
Ø Strong IT literacy, with expertise in Microsoft Office Suite, and ability and confidence to learn multiple new systems. Some experience of cloud-based IT environments and accounting systems preferred.

Job Purpose
Your legacy will be a tangible impact on slowing down climate change and helping nature recover by providing operational support to help Avon Needs Trees (ANT) to achieve its goals to plant hundreds of thousands of trees and enhance complementary habitats.

Main responsibilities
● Supporting the Head of People and Operations with operational tasks (including safeguarding, health and safety), HR functions (including recruitment) and office management

As Policy & Engagement Officer, you will work with the Hope for the Future team to:
- Act as constituents’ main point of contact at HFTF, working with them to effectively engage their elected representatives by supporting them through the constituent journey (including offering tailored advice, letter writing, meeting preparation and coaching, facilitation and follow-up).

Blue Marine Foundation is seeking an experienced and reliable Communications Officer to join the busy communications and outreach department of an ambitious and dynamic ocean conservation charity whose mission is to restore the ocean to health. The successful candidate will be the first point of contact in leading communications for the Solent Seascape Project : a five-year, multi-million-pound conservation project delivered by a partnership of ten organisations. The project aims to reconnect the Solent into a functioning seascape by improving the condition, extent, and connectivity of key marine and coastal habitats using protection and restoration initiatives. The role requires someone who can input and deliver the projects communications strategy, with a view to significantly increasing engagement and reach of the project.
