The Canal and River Trust is committed to growing its fundraised income and has developed ambitious targets for fundraising over the coming years. Currently seeking a Philanthropy Manager. The Philanthropy Manager is an exciting role within the Philanthropy & Partnerships team which will identify, cultivate and maximise relationships with Major Donors and Family Foundations through research, networking, events, proposals, and excellent stewardship. Securing philanthropic income against target to further the work of the Canal & River Trust.
Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience
- Identify, cultivate and develop a portfolio of Major Donor and Family Foundation prospects.
- Meet or exceed fundraising targets each year.
- Develop high quality funding proposals, applications and reports for submission to prospects and donors.
- Support the development of the new Major Donor fundraising programme, taking a proactive approach to networking, and cultivating new cold contacts and prospects.
- Support the development and delivery of the Stewardship and Events programme and other Philanthropy processes.
- Depending on experience, may be involved in developing the US fundraising strategy with the support of the Senior Philanthropy Manager, Head of P&P and Director of Fundraising.
- Displaying the Trust values and behaviours at all times.
- Ensuring that diversity and inclusion are integrated into all aspects of Trust life and promoting inclusion by challenging behaviour, practices, actions, or decisions that are counter to the objectives of the Trust’s policies and values.
Experience & Knowledge
- Proven experience of philanthropy fundraising with a track record of initiating new philanthropic relationships.
- Successful track record of meeting or exceeding income targets.
- Experience of identifying and cultivating cold prospects.
- Experience of deepening donor relationships and growing philanthropic giving year on year.
- Thorough knowledge of legal, financial and ethical considerations related to fundraising from Major Donors and Family Foundations.
- Experience of developing high quality proposals and stewardship reports for prospects and donors.
- Experience of effectively using a CRM system for fundraising.
- Experience of fundraising in the Heritage or Environment sector is desirable.

Nature’s Recovery Officer (Pollinators)
B-Lines are an imaginative and beautiful solution to the problem of the loss of flowers and pollinators. The B-Lines are a series of ‘insect pathways’ running through our countryside and towns, along which we are restoring and creating a series of wildflower-rich habitat stepping stones. They link existing wildlife areas together, creating a network, like a railway, that will weave across the UK.
Avon Wildlife Trust has been working with Buglife (the insect conservation charity) on the B-Lines approach since 2014, enabling us to target work to create continuous swathes of wildlife-rich habitat.
Over the past ten years we have been worked with a wide variety of private landowners and have delivered significant ecological enhancements across the region. This includes the restoration of over 170ha of wildflower-rich grassland and several nature-friendly orchards.
The next phase of B-Lines will focus on the West Mendips, between AWT’s reserves of Folly Farm and Browne’s Folly, with ambitions to scale up and expand this work. As the Nature’s Recovery Officer, you will work with farmers, landowners and communities to grow the network of habitats between these reserves. To ensure climate resilience, you will work on a variety of priority habitats including grasslands, hedgerows, planting in-filed trees and carrying out improvements to woodland edges, all of which are key to the survival of pollinating species.
As the Nature’s Recovery Officer you will:
· Support habitat improvement works on our reserves within the project area.
· Proactively identify sites, providing advice to farmers, landowners and communities, so that they can take action for nature by creating or improving nectar-rich habitats.
· Develop and lead volunteer opportunities, guided by the needs of the landowners and communities you are working with.
· Be supported by the experts at Buglife, who will provide technical advice and training, and ensure that the project is linked to the wider national B-Lines initiative and targeted species recovery where appropriate.
Responsible for
Providing habitat creation & enhancement advice to farmers/landowners and community groups.
Supervision of volunteers & placements.
Supporting habitat improvements on Nature Reserves within the project area.

To support nature’s recovery through the conservation and restoration of habitats in the B-Lines project area, on the Trust’s nature reserves and the wider landscape.

Through the Pine Martens Bounce Back project, the Two Moors Partnership (comprised of Devon Wildlife Trust, Dartmoor National Park Authority, Exmoor National Park Authority, National Trust, Woodland Trust, Forestry England and Somerset Wildlife Trust) we are restoring a viable pine marten population to the wooded landscapes of Somerset and Devon.
Youth Pathways is a ground breaking initiative within the Two Moors project. It has been designed to engage with young people facing barriers or disadvantages and bring them on a journey; from initial nature connection through volunteering opportunities and on to traineeships and careers in conservation. You will lead this exciting programme and deliver the activity within it; building up young people’s skills and confidence and adapting the programme as we go to respond to the voices of young people. The programme is being delivered in close partnership with Young Devon and SPACE Youth Services, so you will work closely with them as well as with colleagues within DWT and other project partners.

We need a part-time Volunteer Support Officer to assist volunteers and help coordinate their activities. You will work closely with us and Bristol City Council to help make volunteering easy and enjoyable for everyone.
You will make sure volunteers feel valued and help them make a difference to their park by being the first point of contact. You will monitor our inbox, respond to volunteer’s questions, help organise activities and promote volunteering opportunities. You will keep volunteers up to date by sending emails and you will support them to use the volunteer database.
- Location: Primarily home based, with the opportunity to work from shared working spaces in Bristol and regular travel to visit volunteers in parks.
- Contract: Part time (15 hours per week, ideally worked over 3 days) until 31st March 2026.
- Salary: £23,400 FTE (£9,360 for 15 hours)
Flexible working is fully supported. This role would suit someone wanting to fit their hours in around existing commitments.

- Is highly IT literate.
- Has experience of using a customer relationship or enquiry management systems.

- Has a methodical approach to process and an aptitude for accuracy and attention to detail.
- Has experience working with volunteers or as a volunteer.
- Is willing to take an Advanced DBS Check.
