Westway Trust is seeking a qualified accountant to join as our Head of Finance who will lead on all aspects of the finance function to achieve the Trusts goals.  You will also manage a small team and will offer strategic finance support across the range of activities undertaken by the organisation.

You will have significant experience operating at a senior level within a complex organisation and registered charity, and will possess the right blend and balance of strategic, communication, innovation and people skills.

Key responsibilities of the role include but not limited to:

• Lead, manage and improve the Trust’s finance function and provide accurate, timely and relevant financial reports as required by the CEO, Executive Team and the Trust Board.
• Be the Executive Lead of the Finance Audit and Risk Committee, ensuring timely papers to the CEO and to the Committee and Board as required and liaising with the Head of Governance and HR as required.
• Ensure the provision and reporting of financial accounts, forecasting and large-scale project/programme budgets, estate development plans, and the associated reporting.
• Oversight of the legal and financial statutory processes in line with the Charity Commission and Companies House requirements, including the Annual Audit. Allocating tasks for timely responses and keeping all colleagues abreast of progress.
• Monitor, cash flow, reserves, analysis of performance against the organisation’s annual business plan and dashboard as it relates to the finance function.
• Contribute to the overall leadership of the Trust and to the Trust’s future strategic and operational planning. Support Executive Team colleagues as required on the delivery of cross-team initiatives.
• Line management of the Senior Finance Manager, the Debt Recovery Consultant and the Development Partnerships Lead.

Essential Experience, Skills and Attributes:

• Significant and successful experience of operating as a Head of Finance, ideally in a charity setting.
• A track record of working collaboratively with a team to develop successful internal partnerships and achieve joint success against shared objectives.
• Experience of the finance function and all the associated processes, with strong attention to detail.
• Experience of implementing enhanced reporting tools within financial software, including the ability to coach others.
• Practical knowledge of VAT, including accounting of partial exemption relevant to charities.
• Experience of managing staff and supporting their development.
• Strong interpersonal skills for both workplace and external representation contexts, operating with enthusiasm, flexibility, energy and commitment and demonstrating credibility and gravitas.

Desirable Experience, Skills and Attributes:

• A good understanding of the local area.
• Experience of change management.
• Competency in use of Access Dimensions, Focal Point and other MS Office software packages.

Qualification:

• Must hold a formally recognised professional accounting qualification.

About the role  

Smart Works are looking to appoint an exceptional Finance Manager to join our finance team at a time of significant growth for the organisation. Working closely with the existing finance team of four, the Finance Manager will play a crucial role in safeguarding the financial health of Smart Works Charity and its network of eleven centres across the UK. 

The Finance Manager will ensure financial systems and processes are followed, financial tasks are completed before deadlines and key stakeholders receive the financial information they need to make sound decisions. 

An important part of the role is to build excellent working relationships with non-financial employees working across Smart Works, so that information needed by the finance team is obtained in a timely fashion. The successful candidate will also identify opportunities for process improvements and automation.

Duties and responsibilities

• Comply with all financial systems and control processes for Smart Works.
• Support the Director in completing submissions, filings and returns completed in a timely manner. This includes supporting the successful completion of the annual audit and production of statutory accounts.
• Produce monthly income and expenditure reports, balance sheets, management accounts and the production of financial board papers for Smart Works Charity and each local centre.

• ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA part qualified (or equivalent, e.g. AAT qualified).

Are you a proactive Senior Finance Manager with wanting to work with a charity?

They are looking for a Senior Finance Manager to support the management team to use financial information to plan and run services and the organisation on a part-time basis (15 hours a week) for up to 6 months.

You will liaise with the Senior Management Team, Budget holders and the external Finance operations provider. You will manage the contract for the day-to-day financial operations and work with the outsourced finance team to clear backlogs of sales invoices (working with SMT project leads), finalise raising invoices process/ sales invoice timetable, establish petty cash reconciliation process, establish new system for expenses and coordinate payment runs. You will also complete monthly pension contribution submissions and contribute to the production of financial statements and the delivery of a successful audit . You will collaborate with the wider organisation to ensure accurate financial management information, identify operational and financial risks, and determine methods of mitigating the risks. You will perform any other reasonable tasks required by the CEO.

This role requires proven experience of using insight and analysis to provide trends, inform and drive business decisions and experience of formulating, overseeing and reporting on operational plans, including KPIs.

The successful candidate will have a strategic, collaborative and solution focused approach to support excellent service provision and fiscal responsibility. About us

Upbeat Communities was founded in 2005 to support refugees and asylum seekers to rebuild their lives through a whole range of support including training, social activities, befriending and hosting. Upbeat Communities became a registered charity in 2015.

In 2013, Upbeat Communities launched Derby Language School (DLS) which is a social enterprise that provides language courses to individuals and organisations in the East Midlands. Alongside generating considerable income for the charity through its private and corporate classes it also provides quality language training for many refugees through contracts with councils.

In 2021, Upbeat Clean was started in response to significant challenges that refugee women have in finding employment to support their families. Upbeat Clean’s 5-year goal is to be able to offer a Real Living Wage job to every refugee woman who needs one in Derby. Upbeat Clean is fast becoming the most talked about commercial cleaning business in Derby with contracts at key venues like Derby Museums, Getinge, Vaillant, Quad, Deda and large offices across the city.

The two social enterprises (DLS and Upbeat Clean) have grown substantially over the last two years with a combined expected turnover of around £700,000 in 2024/25 and more rapid growth ahead. We have over 30 employed cleaners and 20 freelance teachers and interpreters, with over 40 corporate contracts and 100 private clients.

Main duties and responsibilities

Strategy, Analysis & Development:

 • Continuously focus on balancing fast social enterprises growth while pursuing excellence for our customers.

• Support with the development of the overall business strategy.

• Lead on key business changes.

• Support in the development and implementation of marketing strategies for both enterprises.

Operations:

• Oversee the day-to-day business needs of Upbeat Clean and DLS.

• Lead recruitment and training Upbeat Clean and DLS staff.

• Develop excellent systems and processes for Upbeat Clean and DLS.

• Negotiate new partnerships with businesses in the city.

• Act as key account manager for some of the client contracts in conjunction with the Head of Enterprise (HofE).

• Develop and maintain excellent relationships with client contacts to effectively communicate and resolve queries and issues.

• Regularly visit clients to ensure that our clients are heard and looked after.

• Contribute towards the operational excellence of the team and ensure that all contractual service level agreements are met.

• Maintain the organisation’s security and safety standards, policies, and procedures, ensuring these are adhered to, including regulatory compliance.

• Develop and maintain an overview of all policies and procedures and lead on creating new and updating existing policies and procedures as necessary.

• Lead on measuring and maintaining an excellent quality of provision across both social enterprises.

• Create and distribute digital content including publications, annual reports and other marketing materials that communicate the organisation’s activities, products, and services in conjunction with HofE.

Finance:

• Work with the finance team to forecast income and manage expenditure in line with the agreed budget.

Human Resources:

• Line manage team members.

• Lead in workforce planning.

• Assist with the smooth running of HR management including recruitment and terms and conditions compliance.

• Oversee the provision of staff training and development.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

• At least two years’ experience in a management role.

• Strong IT skills with a track record of working across a range of software packages.

• A strong desire to support and empower refugees to succeed.

• Proven ability to spot and solve problems in a proactive way, delegate effectively and prioritise events.

35 hours  - possible job-share

Location: Based in Sefton, Merseyside.

The cost-of-living crisis is biting hard for many people in Sefton and demand for our advice services is rising, and people seeking training or work or with poor health need encouragement to ask for help in navigating the benefits system, or deal with money worries. We are looking for an adviser to work in South Sefton Foodbanks to provide face to face advice, primarily with benefit issues. You will work from foodbanks the majority of the time and also have weekly day/s based with our Welfare Benefits team in our Bootle office.

This is a genuine opportunity to join a passionate and dedicated high-performing team of advisers, caseworkers and money advisors to help people in Sefton with the problems they face, particularly with Universal Credit, Personal Independence Payment, better off calculations and other welfare benefits and debt.  92% of our clients agree or strongly agree they would recommend our advice service to other people. 

You will have a thorough understanding of the issues involved in interviewing and working with clients, and in particular vulnerable people, with excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with clients and our partners.
