About the Team:
The Global Assurance Team reports directly to the Chief Executive of WaterAid UK, with an independent reporting line to the Audit and Risk Committee. The team is made up of the following functions: Legal and Governance, Data Protection, Fundraising Compliance, Global Ethical Checks, and Internal Audit. The team is line managed by the Global Assurance Director.
About the Role:
You will play a critical role in managing risk at WaterAid by helping to deliver WaterAid's due diligence process, and ensuring that WaterAid partners, suppliers and contractors adhere to our Global Ethical Standards. You will provide a service to management and support the implementation and embedding of our ethical check process.
This enables us to:
- work with partners, suppliers and contractors who align with WaterAid values
- be globally compliant with our ethical check standards
In this role, you'll :
Ethical Research and Management
- You will lead on the management and implementation of our ethical check and due diligence process to support WaterAid's overall risk management.
- This includes:
- Researching third party suppliers, partners and donors to ensure they are aligned with WaterAid global ethical standards and do not pose unacceptable reputational risk
- Managing and developing the ethical check process across the WaterAid federation
- Continuing to embed WaterAid's Global Ethical Standards by ensuring that the ethical check process is understood and applied consistently across the WaterAid Federation
Compliance
- Keeping up to date with knowledge and understanding of the Data Protection Act, GDPR and ICO guidelines, as well as any other relevant legislation and guidelines and their impact on fundraising and charity law.
- Embedding best practice in all areas related to compliance, ensuring the effectiveness and accuracy of processes in accordance with the Data Protection Act, GDPR and other applicable legislation or regulation (alongside WaterAid's Fundraising Compliance Manager and the Data Protection Manager).
Relationship/stakeholder management and ways of working
- Collaborate with WaterAid teams in the UK and globally, including communications and fundraising teams, advocacy and country programme teams, working closely with senior stakeholders to ensure WaterAid is delivering a robust due diligence process.
- Maintain productive working relationships across WaterAid to enable an effective due diligence process and delivery of research requirements.
About You:
- Educated to degree-level/equivalent educational standard, or significant equivalent work experience
- Strong understanding of the role of research in can play in protecting the reputation and future proofing WaterAid
- Good knowledge and applied understanding of GDPR implications, ethical checks and other related compliance issues
- Experience maintaining confidentiality and ensuring information is recorded in compliance with GDPR
- Experience using a range of research methodologies and tools to complete due diligence checks, and manage WaterAid's resources for ethical and reputational risk
- Very strong research and analytical skills, including ability to produce detailed and insightful research
- Ability to analyse complex information and communicate clearly and credibly deliver simply for a variety of audiences in written reports, presentations and meetings
- Stakeholder management knowhow to build and maintain great working relationships at all levels, and influence, internally and externally
Although not essential, we also prefer you to have:
- Experience of working in an international organisation
- Experience of working with fundraising functions
- Understanding of overseas development issues
- Experience of managing volunteers

As Governance Officer in the Office of the Directorate, you will serve as a main point of contact between the Foundation and its external partners, including High Commissioners and other stakeholders. The programme
The Office of the Directorate is headed by the Director-General of the Foundation, Dr Anne T. Gallagher AO. In addition to providing overall leadership, it brings together core functions related to governance, finance and people management.
The role
The Governance Officer liaises with external partners and supports the Director-General to ensure governance activities align with the Foundation’s strategic goals. Working under the direction of the Senior Office Manager (People and Finance), you will bring strong administrative and diplomatic skills.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Manage communications and correspondence with Governors, High Commissions, and external stakeholders.
- Keep detailed electronic records of Directorate activities, decisions, and communications.
- Provide administrative support to the Directorate, including diary management and event coordination.
- Offer advice on diplomacy and protocol.
- Organise travel and manage logistics for Directorate engagements.
- Lead the planning and execution of Board and Committee meetings, handle related scheduling, correspondence, and logistics.
- Prepare and distribute documents for Board meetings, assisting with minute taking where required.
- Serve as the contact point for the Foundation’s Civil Society Governors.
- Assist with the reconciliation of expenses, preparation of financial reminders, and support finance-related tasks.
- Contribute to HR, office management, and other Directorate responsibilities as needed.
- Foundation-wide Support: Handle external communications, participate in Foundation-wide initiatives, and contribute to strategic planning and process improvement.
The individual
We seek an individual with strong administrative experience, preferably in an intergovernmental or diplomatic context. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential, along with the ability to build relationships across the organisation and a commitment to fostering a welcoming, inclusive work environment.

What we offer
Salary expectation: £31,000 – £33,000

The Commonwealth Foundation is recruiting for its Graduate Internship Programme. We are seeking four Interns for six-month placements across different areas of our organisation.

The role
Our Graduate Internship Programme provides opportunities for recent graduates to participate in all aspects of the Commonwealth Foundation and gain experience, strengthen their knowledge and develop their skills.
We maintain a team of interns who are recruited together for a six-month period, which may be extended to a maximum of 12 months depending on performance and the needs of the Foundation. Our interns are fully integrated into the Foundation’s staff structure, and we pay close attention to their professional development.
The successful candidates will be allocated to one of the following areas of our work:
- Commonwealth Civil Society (home of our major grants work)
- Creative (within the Advocacy & Creative Programme, home of our cultural initiatives including adda and the Commonwealth Short Story Prize)
- Advocacy (within the Advocacy & Creative Programme, also home of outreach, advocacy and the Critical Conversations events series)
- Communications (working across the Foundation as part of the Knowledge, Learning & Communications team)

About the Role:
The Global Governance & Compliance Manager will lead arrangements for governance and coordinate corporate and legal compliance across the organisation. Working with the trustees and senior leaders as a trusted advisor, you will provide day-to-day coordination and oversight of all governance bodies, meetings and working groups and ensuring efficient information flows between all boards and committees.
About You:
You will have a strong track record of Global Governance, Compliance and best practice across Asia Pacific, Africa and Europe.
You must have:
- Developed and implemented organisation-wide Global Governance Plans in the Not-for -profit sector.
- Organised and facilitated and ensured that good practice is met during executive meetings.
- Worked as a company secretary.
- Been involved in the recruitment and training of trustees, non-executive board members and advisors to the charity in line with the charities ED&I commitment.
- Experience of overseeing all regulatory requirements, legal interactions, regulatory compliance, procurement, insurance and contracts.
- Experience of coordinating necessary regulatory and legal changes to support the development of the organisation including registrations in new countries.
- Delivered a business resilience strategy to ensure the organisation can respond to, manage and recover from disruptive incidents effectively and efficiently.
- Implemented annual training to support the business continuity strategy, plans and processes.
Required Qualifications:
- Educated to degree level or qualified by demonstrable experience.
- Holds or is willing to work towards a recognised qualification in Governance / Risk management.
- Member of ICSA with substantial experience in governance and/or risk management or its equivalent.
