The Opportunity:
The Society for the Environment (SocEnv) is the body responsible for the registration of environmental professionals around the world. Working alongside many key organisations, their aim is to ensure sustainability through environmental professionalism.
This is an exciting opportunity to shape, build and deliver the Society’s aim to provide and promote pathways into “green jobs”. You will be responsible for the Society’s engagement and work with educational settings covering technical, apprenticeship and degree programmes.
About the Role:
As a new role for SocEnv, this is a fantastic opportunity to shape and establish the delivery of the Society’s engagement with training and education providers. Through the development of underpinning vocational and technical pathways to registration, including recognition of education, apprenticeship, and development programmes, you will contribute to the overarching goal of sustainability through environmental professionalism. The successful applicant will deliver the following:
- Manage the development and delivery of the Society’s provider engagement strategy.
- Keep abreast of education and skills developments relevant to the Society’s interests and provide timely briefings for the CEO.
- Create and manage a Skills & Education group with the Society’s Member Bodies.
- Facilitate mapping of SocEnv registrations to green jobs and associated entry routes and career pathways.
- Contribute to the development of standards, processes and guidance.
- Collate and maintain an accessible and up-to-date information hub, including briefing materials on UK and international apprenticeships, vocational and technical education and associated policy – and using this to keep internal and external colleagues informed.
- Draft the Society’s response to consultations on education and skills matters.
- In collaboration with the Employer Engagement Manager, manage the Society’s external education and skills relationships.
- Work with colleagues to support SocEnv’s engagement with external stakeholders including international partners.
- Represent SocEnv at external meetings and build strategic relationships with key partners.
- Act as the Staff lead for relevant committees/working groups as required: producing agendas, papers, reports and minutes, briefing Chairs and members as required, and delivering actions.
- Comply with data protection legislation and act responsibly on matters of data disclosure both internally and to third parties.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Demonstrable knowledge of the HE and/or Apprenticeships sectors, with an awareness of the other key stakeholders in these sectors.
- A keen networker, confident in building and developing effective working relationships internally and externally, including at a senior level.
- An effective and compelling communicator, both in written work and in oral presentation – comfortable using a range of mediums of communication, including virtual platforms.
- A competent researcher, able to analyse information to produce reports suited to a variety of audiences.
- Confident and proactive, able to manage own time effectively and efficiently, prioritising where necessary to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Careful and methodical with data, with an eye for detail.
- Experienced in managing several projects simultaneously.
- A systems-thinker who can identify risks and problems and devise solutions.
- A life-long learner, committed to acquiring, developing and applying specialist knowledge and understanding.
- An effective team player.
- Experienced in use of MS Office applications, especially Word, Excel and Outlook, to be able to produce well-formatted reports and spreadsheets.
Desirable:
- Experienced in working in a regulatory/professional body environment or similar, or in an education support function.
- Educated to degree level or with relevant professional experience.
- Connected to established networks within the education sector.

About the Society for the Environment:
The Society for the Environment (SocEnv) is the body responsible for the registration of environmental professionals around the world. They are the custodian of the Chartered Environmentalist, Registered Environmental Practitioner and Registered Environmental Technician professional registers, and since 2004 have established a sound platform as the body tasked with championing and registering the expertise of environmental professionals across sectors.
Working under the mandate of our Royal Charter as a partnership of professional bodies (currently 24), they are in a unique position, bringing together a range of disciplines and sectors to reflect the multi-disciplinary practice of environmental professionals. The Society uses this unique position to advance environmental good practice bringing together expert input from our registered environmental professionals and like-minded organisations.
As the climate and environment emergencies continue to develop, they aim to ensure that the decisions being made to effectively adapt to and combat current and future challenges are made by those with the proven competence to do so. This will also require more professionals – with SocEnv aiming to provide and promote pathways into such “green jobs”.

We’re looking for an experienced civil litigator to join our small (but mighty!) in-house team at Fish Legal. We use the law to fight pollution and other damage or threats to the water environment.
You’ll work closely with our Head of Practice to provide a responsive, practical, cost-effective service taking civil action on behalf of angler members regarding damage to fisheries.
This is a permanent, full time, remote role that suits a solicitor who’d like to work in an intellectually challenging environment alongside a very passionate and supportive team—although our casework can be demanding, we’re flexible and family-friendly.
What you’ll be doing
· Provide legal advice and representation to member clubs, riparians, and fishery owners in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland
· Conduct litigation, instructing and working with experts and counsel
· Correspond with government agencies and environmental regulators
· Obtain information using Environmental Information and Freedom of Information legislation
· Attend site visits as required
· Take an active role in our internal case management meetings
· Report on your own cases and collaborate on broader Fish Legal litigation
· Work with our external communications team to publicise successful legal actions
· Manage your own legal files with the support of our Legal Administrator
· Comply with all professional regulatory requirements for practising as an in-house solicitor in a membership association
Who you are
· Degree qualified solicitor with 3+ years PQE and a current practicing certificate
· Experienced in representing and advising clients in dispute resolution and litigation, including pre-action and issued claims
· You have a proven ability to build strong, productive internal and external relationships, plus a demonstrable track record of working on successful cases
· You shine autonomously whilst working within a small team and you have a flexible approach—you’ll be happy to manage a full and varied caseload and ready to pivot with changing priorities
· Negotiation and advocacy are some of your strengths alongside your excellent analytical and legal research skills—you also have a good understanding of Civil Procedure Rules
· You know your way around platforms such as Microsoft Office 365 and SharePoint, your written and verbal communication is brilliant, and you’re committed to providing a high standard of member care
· You’re self-assured, confident, capable, and detail-oriented with sound judgement and a proactive attitude—and willing to own your continuous professional development
What will make you stand out
· A passion for healthy waters and fisheries
· Familiarity with relevant environmental legislation and the law relating to sporting rights, an understanding of how the water industry is regulated in the UK, and knowledge of the issues affecting water quality and quantity

About Social Change Lab
Social Change Lab is a nonprofit conducting and disseminating social movement research to help solve the world’s most pressing problems. Historically, social movements conducting disruptive campaigns seem to have been crucial in driving significant political, social and economic change. Despite this, there has been little research systematically analysing the effectiveness of social movements and the strategies or tactics that most influence the success of these campaigns. Our research addresses this neglected knowledge gap and provides actionable advice to advocates and philanthropists working on a variety of important issues, with a focus on animal advocacy and climate change. We support activist groups in choosing effective campaigning strategies and tactics (e.g. via delivering training and workshops) as well as supporting funders with their philanthropic giving. Our work has been covered in respected outlets such as The Guardian, Stanford Social Innovation Review, Deutsche Welle, the New York Times, and more.
About the role
As the Director of Social Change Lab, you would have a high level of responsibility and high impact. You would lead our small team in delivering cutting-edge research on the outcomes and strategies of social movements and ensuring widespread communication of this work to key stakeholders. You would play a significant role in shaping our strategy and the programmes we want to deliver, such as research, capacity building, training or philanthropic advising.
The responsibilities of this role

Lead the organisation, and take ultimate responsibility for the outcomes and impact in pursuit of our mission.

This is a permanent part-time role for up to 22.5 hours per week.

What's the role about?
This is a key role supporting the EDI Team, with the ability to shape our ways of working to be more inclusive. There will be opportunities to research, and develop materials and training, with support from our specialists.
The role would suit somebody with strong organisational and communication skills, with a passion for, and broad and general awareness of EDI. This would be suitable for someone with a background in EDI who wants to apply those skills in the conservation sector or someone with good EDI knowledge and experience that wants to step up from a more junior role.
Essential skills, knowledge and experience:
- Understanding of a range of EDI issues such as inclusive language, anti-racism and accessibility - with a willingness to grow and develop this specialism with support and training.
- Awareness of protected characteristics, the equality act and barriers to people of colour, disabled people and people in other protected groups at work.
- Experience of Teams and Microsoft outlook and calendar or similar.
- Strong IT skills across a range of software including knowledge or willingness to learn using SharePoint to a good standard.
- Strong administration and organisational skills, including the ability to manage data or records, manage own time and prioritise, create basic project plans and meet agreed deadlines.
- Strong communication skills – with the ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences verbally and in writing, recognise and communicate sensitive topics and consider how differences in background and experience might affect how this needs to be planned and delivered.
