Education should be the means to break the link between demographics and destiny. Yet every week 109 children in England – equivalent to three full classrooms – are asked to leave their schools and never come back, with disastrous personal and societal consequences. The Difference, a young education charity, was founded to change the story on this lost learning. It exists to build the status and expertise of teachers working with vulnerable children, particularly those who are excluded from mainstream schools.
By 2030, The Difference want rates of exclusion and absence to be falling nationally and for schools to be better equipped to support all children, including those who may be vulnerable.
The organisation was born out of a year of research into school exclusions with think-tank IPPR. This research identified a lack of inclusion expertise in schools and proposed a new leadership development programme to fill this gap. In 2018, The Difference founder Kiran hired the team who took this idea from concept to reality, beginning work with our first schools.
The Difference is now a 22-strong team delivering multiple school leadership programmes, alongside a growing research and policy arm. The team is supported by our Youth Advisory Board, made up of young people who have experienced exclusion and who provide their expertise and insights on how school inclusion work should be done. This work is needed more than ever. Effects of COVID-19, coupled with the spiralling cost of living, have substantially increased levels of vulnerability. Schools serving excluded pupils face under-funding. The Difference has had excellent early impact but there is work ahead to capture this, share learning with schools and policy-makers, and grow our capacity to lower exclusions across England.
Our first permanent Head of Fundraising will drive the growth and sustainability of our fundraising function. Having proved the impact on exclusions via our programmes, you will help us generate the income to scale this success across the country. We need an expert fundraiser to support this journey. Join us.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive the delivery of a new fundraising strategy for The Difference, motivating and involving key members of the team, particularly the Development and Impact Manager.
- Build and manage a dynamic portfolio of around 20-30 major individual prospects and donors with capacity to give £50k+, working with key stakeholders to solicit and close asks.
- Grow overall fundraised income from £1.25m to £1.9m annually in next 3 years.
- Write and submit funding proposals to major donors, trusts and foundations, and corporate supporters.
- Support the creation of engaging content from our impact data and case studies, for The Difference’s website and social media that could lead to online fundraising, including feeding into writing press releases as required.
- Build relationships with major trusts/foundations, donors or companies to secure 5 and 6 figure income
- Plan and deliver fundraising outreach to build out our list of fundraising pipeline.

St George’s Hospital Charity is committed to enhancing the life-changing care at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Our dedication lies in making a tangible difference to patients and their families by supporting innovative developments that go above and beyond what the NHS provides. Our goal is to contribute to an enhanced experience and improved outcomes for those who rely on us in their time of need.
Catering to a vast population of 1.3 million people across South West London, and 3.5 million people in Surrey and Sussex, St George’s Hospital stands as one of the nation’s largest teaching hospitals, with an international reputation for quality of care, education, and pioneering treatments.
Our ambitions
The charity has been embracing exciting, new opportunities and increasing its impact since it became fully independent of the NHS in 2017 and today, it works hand in glove with the Trust to fund a range of projects, equipment, and services.
We have an ambitious agenda and are poised for growth, aiming to double or income from £3m in 5 years with a particular focus on increasing unrestricted income. We have launched several exciting new initiatives to help reach these targets including a current major appeal, ‘Time for Change’, which aims to have raised £5m by the end of 2025, as well as the successful rollout of the charity’s first face-to-face fundraising programme.
To help realise our ambition, we are looking for a Director of Fundraising and Communications to join our senior leadership team and support the charity in achieving our goals.
The role
This crucial role will help to strategically grow and develop our income and awareness. As part of the Senior Management Team, you will report directly to the charity’s CEO, have key Trustee relationships with the Chair and Fundraising lead Trustee, and build collaborative relationships with the senior staff and clinicians across St George’s University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
You will build and lead the fundraising and communications team, both strategically and operationally, whilst managing them through a period of change. Camphill is a worldwide movement with over 100 independent charities (often referred to as 'communities') supporting individuals with additional support needs to lead meaningful lives and to reach their fullest potential. The organisation began here, in Scotland, in 1939 through a group of Austrian refugees. They sought societal change in the way disadvantaged and vulnerable people were treated and cared for.
There are 11 Camphill charities in Scotland, from Aberdeen to Dumfries and Galloway, supporting over 500 people from early childhood through to older age. In Aberdeen, Camphill Estates owns the land occupied by 6 of them. They are independent charities but work together under the Camphill Estates umbrella for the common good.
Historically, Camphill Estates had one Fundraising Manager to generate voluntary raised funds and to support all of the communities to fundraise for themselves. This all changed three years ago when this new post was created, representing a sea change in the organisation’s thinking.
It followed a master plan which was drawn up with the help of consultants who reviewed the needs of the estate. This process produced a lengthy list of capital build projects for 5 of the 6 charities that are necessary to improve the buildings and the opportunities for the service users. The cost of delivering those projects was an estimated £15million with the focus on improvements to Camphill School and the residential units.
A highly experience fundraiser was appointed to create and lead the capital campaign to raise the required £15m funding, within a ten-year period. Three years on, the campaign has met with great success - £4.5m has been raised already. They also built a very strong and focussed fundraising team of five, raised the profile of the campaign in the local area and built strong working relationships with all the five partner charities.
Sadly, the current capital appeal fundraiser is moving on from Camphill Estates to live overseas, and Camphill Estates are looking for a new senior fundraiser to lead the appeal and carry on the good work. In the three years since the appeal was launched, further capital requirements have emerged, and a new charity (Murtle Market) has been created. The appeal total has therefore been reset at £15m and again, ten years has been set as the timescale.
The Board has set aside a healthy budget which allows the Director of Fundraising to build a team to deliver success. It will be up to the Director to devise a strategy and manage the team of five fundraisers to reach the new income goal.
Crucially, Board do not see this appeal as an end in itself. Such a varied and evolving group of charities will always have a capital fundraising requirement and are therefore happy to offer this role as a permanent position, not linked to the current appeal target or length.
How To Apply
You are advised to get in touch well in advance of the closing date to give us time to consider your application and pre-interview the strongest applicants.
Closing Date: 5pm, Friday 17th May
Interview Date: Monday 27th May
This search is being conducted exclusively for Camphill Estates by BTA (Bruce Tait Associates). Our leadership team have all worked extensively in and with the voluntary sector and academia and we use this experience to match organisations and individuals to create great appointments.
For more than 50 years, the British Dyslexia Association (BDA) has been the voice of people living with dyslexia. We aim to influence government and other institutions to promote a dyslexia friendly society that enables dyslexic people of all ages to reach their full potential. The BDA is established as the leading dyslexia charity in the UK.
Unfortunately, the need for our support and services is high. Although awareness of dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties has grown, there are ongoing and widening gaps in access to the identification of dyslexia and the provision of expert learning support. Our national Helpline is busier than ever, supporting almost 5,500 people each year, reminding us on a daily basis why we must keep fighting for the rights of our beneficiaries.
Against a challenging backdrop for so many organisations, last financial year we saw continued growth in income from fundraising and training. We invested in growing our team and identified five strategic objectives for the period 2023-2026, and activities are currently underway to deliver these priorities. Our next CEO will continue to oversee these whilst laying the foundations for our next strategy cycle which we intend to publish in 2026. As such, the timing of this appointment allows the successful candidate the opportunity to work with the Board and other key stakeholders to articulate the long-term vision for our charity, establishing a plan that enables us to expand our reach and deepen our programmes.
The role of CEO at the BDA is one of both challenge and immense reward, offering the chance to lead a passionate and skilled team dedicated to making a tangible difference in society. The ideal candidate will bring strategic thinking, leadership experience and a commitment to promoting inclusion for our beneficiaries in education, in work and in life. The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate their financial acumen and business development and delivery skills, as achieving our mission will depend on financial security and sustainability.
We are excited about the next stage in our development as a charity and the opportunity to support even more people with dyslexia to reach their full potential. If you would like to be part of that journey, then we would love to hear from you.
