Groundswell Community Connector (Luton) – Job Description

Groundswell Project

Groundswell is a Community Interest Company (CIC) that focuses on peace-building, countering social harms and creating more resilient communities. We seek to do this through our trademarked ‘FIND-CONNECT-AMPLIFY’ model in which we identify local and existing community based organisations, connect them with wider community and statutory partners and amplify their efforts. We are active across the UK and are now seeking to expand our network of community connectors.

Job Context

Groundswell Project is seeking to recruit community connectors to work on a Big Lottery funded project called ‘Together we are’. This project seeks to implement Groundswell’s ‘Find, Connect, Amplify’ approach in four cities in the UK, namely London, Manchester, Glasgow and Luton. These roles are tasked with mapping community based groups in their respective cities, offering them support, connecting them with local statutory partners and putting on events that allow said groups to expand their outreach in the local area. Ultimately, the aim of the role is to ensure local community groups are better connected, much more visible and, thus, more effective. We are currently recruiting for a Luton based connector.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

We currently involve approximately 500 volunteers who help raise funds and awareness of RABI within local communities.  Most of our volunteers are linked to one of our 40 county committees across England & Wales.

You will take the lead for volunteering across a range of projects including the development and implementation of new volunteering systems and processes and the piloting of a new volunteer ambassador programme.  The role also includes the line management of the Volunteering Projects Co-ordinator. 

Key responsibilities:

Volunteering systems & processes

• As the lead ‘subject matter expert’ for volunteering, you will lead on the implementation of new volunteering systems & processes across RABI.  This includes making decisions to support system development, testing, communications and training for users.
• Work closely with the National Volunteering Manager and the team of Regional Managers, to ensure they are equipped and supported to make best use of the new systems. 
• Work with the Head of Volunteering and Volunteering Projects Co-ordinator to ensure the appropriate processes and policies are in place to support good practice and an accessible and inclusive volunteering experience.
• Lead on the evaluation of new systems & processes for volunteering and agree clear recommendations / priorities for future development.

Diversify and expand volunteer offer

• Lead on development and implementation of new volunteer roles – including the introduction of community and corporate ambassadors.
• Work with a range of stakeholders to clarify priorities for future development for new types of volunteering – from flexible, micro roles, to more formal roles such as volunteer ambassadors. 
• Develop and agree approach to volunteer recruitment, engagement and development – to support ambassadors and other roles.
• Put in place a clear development plan for ambassadors – including opportunities to come together, collaborate on future content and training etc.
• Manage and evaluate pilots – gathering evidence to inform future development. 
  

Volunteer learning and development

• Understand volunteer learning and training needs and organisational requirements to inform future development.

• Lead on improvements to informal and formal recognition of RABI volunteers / county committees – including introduction of long service awards and involvement in national initiatives such as Volunteers Week and Big Help Out.

Team management and leadership

• Work closely with the Head of Volunteering, National Volunteering and Senior Regional Managers to set direction, make decisions and engage the wider team.
• Manage the Volunteering Projects Co-ordinator, setting clear goals and supporting their development.
• Work with the wider Volunteering team and other departments, to support and embed the volunteer journey and good practice in volunteer management.

• Ensures and enables successful day-to-day food collection and distribution operations by providing consistent support, guidance, and management to the volunteer Foremen.

• Ensures all agreed operational Surplus to Supper processes are followed consistently every day.

• Provides an on-going link and communication from one day shift to another ensuring that all scheduled and ad-hoc daily and weekly requirements – either food distribution or kitchen/event – are met. 

• When there is no daily volunteer foreman, covers the foreman role for the day. Also, could cover a missing driver shift (although should be a real exception).

• Handles ad-hoc collections and distributions outside the normal morning shifts (where no volunteers available)

This is an exciting year for BCP in terms of solidifying our growth and development, and this is where you come in! We are looking for an operations manager to help oversee our existing projects as well as those in development, along with ensuring smooth day-to-day operations remain smooth. Our ops manager will support our staff, admin, and volunteer team leaders to ensure they feel supported and empowered in their roles, The role will also undertake and ensure effective monitoring and evaluation of our funded projects so that we can maintain positive relationships with our current funders and confidently seek relationships with new funders.

You will be someone who is compassionate and has a real understanding and empathy around the determinants of poverty and you will want to make a tangible difference to peoples' lives. You will be a creative thinker, with excellent data analysis skills and a high emotional intelligence. You will be confident managing multiple projects and able to maintain focus on both the day-to-day running of our core projects, such as the foodbank, as well as implementing and overseeing shorter term and one-off funded projects.

Overall purpose of the post:
To manage the day-to-day running of this growing charity in Broxtowe and ensure its continued development, working proactively with the trustees to provide day-to-day operational coordination and implement agreed development initiatives.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Strategy and Operations

1. Develop, implement, and lead execution of the charity's annual operational plan and 3-year strategic plan.

Swindon’s welcome, accessible space in the heart of the town is looking for two Hub Coordinators - to help us grow, build and do more: by and with the community.

You’ll be working with a dynamic group of volunteers and visitors, helping to keep the Hub running day-to-day, as well as taking on a special focus of your own.

In this varied and rewarding role you will develop and coordinate our team of volunteers and Sessional Workers (zero hours youth workers).  You will be instrumental in defining our volunteer strategy moving forward and identify other participation opportunities such as work experience placements, university placements, internships and apprenticeships.

Q:alliance provides support, information and representation for the LGBTQ+ people who live, work and play in Milton Keynes and Bedford. We have detailed knowledge of the issues and challenges that organisations and individuals face locally. It’s our goal to create more safe spaces and resources to ensure the LGBTQ+ community is well represented and supported.

This exciting new role will help deliver the directives of a history and heritage project funded by the Heritage Lottery. The project will support the erudition of LGBTQ+ heritage in Milton Keynes, advancing local communities’ understanding of Milton Keynes’ LGBTQ+ history and inspiring a commitment to encapsulating, celebrating, and feeling connected through shared heritage. This post will be key to extending our reach into seldom asked communities, as well as securing relationships with founding community members. This role will support our Communications and Engagement Manager to develop safer spaces for LGBTQ+ local communities through collaboration with partner agencies and delivery of LGBTQ+ cultural competency training to a range of stakeholders involved in the wider project.

You will work cross-departmentally and participate in effective monitoring systems to ensure robust reporting.

Main Responsibilities

• Project Development - Develop and implement the directives of the funded project, supporting key partners in their collaboration with Q:alliance. Communicate project aims with communities and stakeholders and establish meaningful engagement in the concept of encapsulating heritage and celebrating differing LGBTQ+ identities in Milton Keynes. Support the gathering of audio histories and the collection and succession of community artefacts through the archive. Evaluate and analyse impact.

• E-book creation – Support the Communications and Engagement Manager on the development of an E-book to capture the outputs of the project, including key heritage findings and personal stories.

• Event coordination – Plan, organise and support the delivery of history clubs in line with the project plan, ensuring accessibility for a wide range of invested community members. Support the curation of associated exhibition events.

• Stakeholder and community engagement – Work with the Communications and Engagement Manager to plan engagement and outreach activities in line with the directives of the funded project. Forge and support enduring relationships with key partners, strengthening our commitment to building an alliance of cross-sector compassionate advocates for the LGBTQ+ community in its diverse forms.

• Training – Support the development and delivery of LGBTQ+ cultural competency training to a range of stakeholders involved in the project.

• Data capture and intelligence - Support Q:alliance’s commitment to sustaining a contemporary data and monitoring mechanism, guaranteeing we can deliver thorough evaluations of our services and competent feedback to our funders and stakeholders on the efficacy of our work.

You will serve as a prominent point of contact for the LGBTQ+ Heritage Project and encourage long-term advocates of our organisation and the community’s engagement in history, heritage and legacy work.  We are recruiting a Project Coordinator to oversee the delivery and development of a flagship Community Wellbeing Project, which operates in partnership with Brent Council. The project is a Community Hub hosted in a community space in Stonebridge (not in Sufra’s existing premises). Members of the project can access a Community Shop, a Community Café and Kitchen, and holistic support in the form of Advice casework and workshops. The objective of the project is to deliver food aid alongside wraparound holistic support in way that improves the financial, physical and mental wellbeing of its members, who are struggling with the cost of living.

This collaborative project has been made possible due to the support of multiple partners and has already proven highly successful. It is likely to form the basis of a new model of support for people experiencing vulnerabilities that will be replicated across Brent and possibly elsewhere in London.

The Project Coordinator will oversee the delivery of the project, ensuring both the shop and the café operate effectively and in accordance with agreed standards and procedures. The successful candidate will help shape the project in the months ahead, whilst supporting guests, collecting data, and monitoring and evaluating the project. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a busy and varied environment, managing multiple priorities at the same time. They will have experience in a customer-facing role, dealing with the general public and managing volunteers. It would be beneficial for the post holder to have experience supporting vulnerable people with complex needs from a wide variety of backgrounds. The successful candidate will be the first point of contact for members that sign onto the pilot project, and will be representing the organisation to external partners. To be responsible for the effective delivery of the I&A Service which will be delivered through a range of channels, including face to face, telephone, email, digital, and other means, across the Bromley and Greenwich boroughs.

The Role

Role Purpose

Grandmentors is an innovative volunteering project where more mature volunteers use their lifetime of skills and experience to support and mentor under supported young people (predominantly aged 17-25) with experience of the care system. These young people often need a guiding hand and role model to support them to find work, continue their education or begin training – giving them the skills and self-belief to lead successful and independent lives. Volunteers meet with a young person regularly to boost their confidence and work towards goals, which are unique to each young person.

The postholder will be leading on the Grandmentors project within the London Borough of Lewisham, working closely with Lewisham Council and our other Grandmentors projects nationally. The Project Coordinator role is part of a job share, meaning you will be working closely with another Project Coordinator who has already been working on the project for a year. The post holder will attend Council team meetings to integrate Grandmentors into other Council services as well as other local community and council-led events. They will recruit volunteers locally from the community, and within surrounding areas where referred young people live. Young people are referred directly to Volunteering Matters through the Leaving Care team at Lewisham Council. The post holder with work with the young people to match them with a volunteer mentor and support the ongoing relationship. This can include some evening and weekend work, which is within our flexible working culture and policy.

The postholder will be expected to maintain relationships whilst developing new ones, and will be working to achieve match and referral targets. A flexible and adaptable approach is important, working with volunteers and young people to achieve positive outcomes. The postholder will ensure the volunteers are trained and supported to help the young people achieve their goals, and also to support young people who may have varied complex challenges relating to for example, physical and mental health, new parenthood, English as an additional language and barriers faced through cultural heritage.
