Introduction to Children in Emergencies (with credit-rated option)

This course will enable participants to explore perspectives on children’s rights in emergencies and develop the critical skills to respond in a child-centred way. The course aims to develop the competencies required to effectively meet the needs of children through humanitarian programmes.

In addition, participants will be able to explore two thematic areas to further develop skills required to address the key programming issues in relation to: Child Protection in Emergencies and Education in Emergencies.

What does the course cover?

Thematic areas

This course offers participants the opportunity to apply in-depth focus to thematic areas of:

• Child Protection in Emergencies

• Education in Emergencies

The thematic sessions will:

• Define key terms and definitions and provide a clear justification for the importance of the sector;
• Idenfity and explain the key actors and coordination mechanisms within the sector;
• Define the main problem areas in the sector;
• Explain the main methodologies used in the sector,
• Explore the most appropriate methodology to construct a programme response.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

• Explain the rationale and key principles for addressing the needs of children as a distinct group in emergencies;

• Describe the implications of the key international frameworks pertaining to children in emergencies;

• Incorporate child participation into emergency programming;

• Identify and use the key tools and resources available in order to mainstream children in emergency response programming;

• Recognise particular vulnerabilities and capacities of different groups of children to improve emergency programming;

• Consider the key programming factors for children in education, health, nutrition, protection, shelter and WASH;

• Collaborate effectively with key stakeholders in a humanitarian context;

• Apply techniques of child programming in a humanitarian response;

• Involve, and integrate the needs of, children in disaster preparedness activities;

• Demonstrate an understanding of the key requirements for programming in one specialist area: Child Protection in Emergencies, Education in Emergencies or Nutrition for Children in Emergencies.

The credit-rated assessment:

This course has an optional credit-rated assessment component. Only those who have paid the additional credit-rated fee BEFORE the course and completed the post-course assignment will receive the Oxford Brookes certificate. Relief workers, and those who are new to the sector, wanting to develop child programming skills for humanitarian response and preparedness including:

• Project and programme managers working with NGOs or UN agencies

Course Structure:

Registration is from 8.45 am in the first day.  Training each day will run from 9 am and conclude at 5.45 pm.

From the second day, each training day begins with a review of the topics covered the previous day to ensure that the concepts, tools, and frameworks are fully understood. Each day ends with a period of reflection, evaluation, and questions.

Participants will be actively encouraged to participate in classroom discussions and group work. The trainer will draw on both theoretical and practical knowledge in order to make the experience and learning applicable to the realities of the humanitarian sector.
