Job description

The Welcome Home Crisis Supporter

Closing Date Monday Monday 21st Nov 2021

Bury Involvement Group (BIG) is a mental health charity led by people with personal experience of mental and emotional distress. BIG is commissioned locally to provide the Bury Peer Led Crisis Service which provides an out of hour’s crisis support service, in the community, for adults experiencing mental health crisis. The service provides person centred support in a non-clinical environment which is led by a team with personal experience of mental and emotional distress. The service forms part of a new partnership between us, and local Pennine Care Foundation Trust services, to provide a responsive crisis service to individuals in distress within the area.

We are excited to have secured funding allowing us to develop and deliver a new to pilot a new role for a Welcome Home Crisis Supporter, who will join the Bury Peer Led Crisis Service team, to support adults in Bury to make the transition from hospital to community as supportive as possible - by providing them with a safe and consistent therapeutic relationship along their journey.

As a Welcome Home Supporter you will interact, communicate and build relationships based on mutuality with adults experiencing mental health crisis. You will provide face to face, and occasional telephone, emotional support to individuals leaving the mental health inpatients unit in Bury, supporting them throughout the discharge process back into the community. You will adopt a collaborative approach to working with visitors helping them to develop a welcome home plan through a mutual negotiation of the visitor’s needs to support them out of hospital.  You will sit within the Bury Peer Led Crisis Service team and will work alongside the team to facilitate a drop-in service. You will keep a record of contact and outcomes to report and provide monitoring and evaluation data supported by the Service Lead.

We wish to recruit someone with experience of working with people with mental health problems, who themselves has personal experience of mental distress. We are looking for individuals who have experience of working with people at risk of suicide and self-injury. We are looking for a reflective individual with a demonstrable ability to build positive therapeutic relationships with adults experiencing mental health crisis. You will need to be able to communicate with visitors clearly and effectively using non-clinical language. You will need to have proven experience supporting adults with mental health conditions using recovery orientated approaches. You will need to be able to work effectively as part of a team, while being highly organised and planning and prioritising your work.

Our team is friendly, supportive, and committed to our mission of empowering adults with mental health conditions towards recovery and improved quality of life. You will be integral to the continued development of a well-respected local mental health charity that makes a real difference to people’s lives.
