Job description

Do you share our passion for empowering disabled children and young people to play, learn and grow confidently into adulthood? Do you want to help us give more families the practical and emotional support they need to support a disabled child?

What we do

KIDS is a remarkable charity. Founded in 1970, we work with local authorities and philanthropic supporters in providing a wide range of services to disabled children, young people and their families across England.

Last year, 13,500 disabled children from birth to 25 benefitted from our work and, in a challenging environment, we continue to provide exceptional services, from crèches and nurseries for the under 5s to youth clubs, short breaks and residential stays for young adults. Commissioners and users appreciate the high quality of our information, advice and mediation services and 96% of parents say they are happy with the KIDS services they receive.

Our Board

KIDS has a first-class team of staff and trustees, all dedicated to the charity’s deeply held values. Stephen Unwin is Chairman of a committed Board of Trustees and is the parent of a severely disabled young man who has benefitted from KIDS’ exemplary services. Our recently appointed Chief Executive, Katie Ghose, is working with trustees, staff and families to shape a new strategy from 2021. We want to strengthen our offer, reach more families and raise our profile to influence policy, change attitudes and secure a bright future for every child, whatever their disability or condition.

What are we looking for?

We now seek four new trustees to bring governance of the highest quality to secure our services and shape our next chapter. We’re especially (though not exclusively) interested in attracting people with the following skills: financial management; safeguarding and risk; strategic planning; business development; disability and special educational needs; and health. One trustee will become Treasurer, when the incumbent steps down next year. We are particularly interested in hearing from disabled people, who are currently underrepresented at Board level, as well as from candidates with relevant experience as parents, carers or siblings; and from young people and black or ethnic minority applicants.

What’s involved?

The Board together with the CEO and senior executives currently meets 6 times a year in central London, normally for about three hours, with an additional annual meeting to review and consider direction and strategy. The Finance & Audit Committee meets 5 times a year. Trustees are expected to actively contribute between meetings.

Trustees receive a full induction and are reimbursed for reasonable travel expenses.

Closing date: 9am Tuesday 14th April
