We currently have an opportunity for an Environmental Compliance Manager within our National Environment & Climate Action Team within the Strategy & Impact Directorate. The S&I directorate analyses current and emerging policy and sets the Trust’s strategy and standards for regional delivery across all the Trust’s activities. The Environment and Climate action team is responsible for delivering the Trust’s strategy and policy on all environment and climate related sustainability issues, including environmental compliance as a minimum and achieving biodiversity net gain.
Reporting to the Head of Environment and Climate action, the Environmental Management and Compliance manager role will be responsible for the Trust’s Environmental Management System and its associated policies, commitments, and standards, linked to the Trusts evolving sustainability and organisational strategies. The role will require establishing good relationships with other teams in the Trust to drive sound environmental practice from our operations and 3rd party activities.
Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience
Key Accountabilities:
- Responsible for, and day-to-day management of the Trust’s environmental management system
- Deliver a programme of activities and updates to environmental standards, guidance and tools, ensuring that these are delivered on time and within budget. This forms part of a system refresh that will be delivered this financial year.
- Work with internal technical experts and the Trust’s legal team to ensure that the standards meet regulatory requirements.
- Liaise with Trust operational and delivery teams to ensure that standards are deliverable and align with existing and emerging business processes.
- Manage external technical input where requires (e.g. from consultants)
- Assist in the investigation of environmental incidents, near misses and ensure the production and dissemination of key learnings
- Preparation of board and Environmental Advisory Group (EAG) papers and acts as secretariat of EAG meetings
- Producing case studies and other examples of best practice for internal and external audiences
- Developing and delivering environmental training
- Displaying the Trust values and behaviours at all times.
- Ensuring that diversity and inclusion are integrated into all aspects of Trust life and promoting inclusion by challenging behaviour, practices, actions, or decisions that are counter to the objectives of the Trust’s policies and values.
Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
- IEMA Practitioner qualification or equivalent
- Experience of administering environmental management systems, including a good understanding of ISO14000 family of environmental standards.
- Authoring company standards and guidance
- Broad understanding of key environmental themes and associated legislation (Air Quality, Biodiversity, Water Quality, Waste, Pollution Prevention and Control, Invasive Species)
- Experience of investigating environmental incidents and near misses
- Working knowledge of GIS and using spatial data to support environmental strategies
- Project/ programme management skills
- Developing reporting systems and managing environmental data to report progress

The role will be home-based, with the expectation to attend main regional hubs either at Milton Keynes, Birmingham, or Little Venice (Paddington), for collaborative working. This is a national role, requiring collaboration with teams in all six of the Trust’s regions. There will be an expectation that the successful candidate will be able travel to attend meetings or fieldwork throughout the regional waterway network.

The Volunteer Manager (VM) is responsible for overseeing high-quality sourcing of volunteers to join as 1MM Mentors across the regions, which includes partnership development, online site listing, and matching mentors/mentees, general oversight of mentoring relationships in different programmes, implementation of safeguarding measures, fundraising, meeting growth targets and leading all aspects of mentor management. The role will help to establish a pipeline across the regions, with 5000 new mentors for 2024. This role reports to the Chief Commercial Officer (CCO).
1MM VM’s main tasks include:

Helping 1MM to scale by sourcing sufficient volunteer mentors who go on to become confirmed matches for high quality mentoring relationships.

Ensuring mentors coming online have completed the platform mentor training within 1 month, and that this conversion results in sufficient and timely readiness of mentors to meet the needs of programmes with one month’s lead time.

Providing ongoing support to 1MM’’s Volunteer Providers (eg employer partners), maintaining strong relationships.

Securing one corporate sponsor per quarter.

Becoming familiar with the 1MM Platform, using it comfortably for ongoing administration and providing support to mentors.

This is a full time role offered in London, for 6 months (continuing subject to funding). This is a hybrid role with two days working at home, two days in the London office, and one day where it is up to you.

About First Step Trust:
First Step Trust (FST) is a registered charity providing access to work experience and employment opportunities for people (referred to as workforce) with mental health challenges, learning disabilities, a history of offending and other socio-economic disadvantages, with a key aim to provide opportunities for people who are not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET).
The charity currently operates a garage and a catering business, both focused on providing real-life work experience for these learners. FST has over thirty years' experience as a provider of employability programmes and has successfully run the commercial aspects of the business, creating a solid balance sheet with healthy reserves.
In recent years, FST has been exploring new ways of helping people overcome barriers to learning including, low levels of literacy/numeracy and debilitating anxiety in formal situations e.g. exams or interviews.
Through FST's ground breaking work using Virtual Reality (VR) to upskill our workforce members and engage learners in secure mental health facilities, we have recognised the potential of assistive and emerging technologies as a real game-changer for the people we work with. The technology enables us to do things never before possible. We have, with the support of Halfords Autocentres and the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), developed an innovative programme which offers high quality training in a safe environment that does not require any written work.
This led us to identify the need for new ways of enabling and 'scaffolding' learning that will combat some of the wider psychosocial barriers including 'fear of learning', the impact of e.g. learning disabilities, Autism, negative peer pressure and reoffending behaviours. A recent Resolution Foundation report suggests that current "low rates of training among the least educated are troubling, given international evidence showing that there are higher returns to adult education for these individuals." Research suggests that AI/ machine learning could help us overcome these.
We have been supported by two Ufi VocTech Trust grants to deliver VR supported training to these communities of learners furthest away from learning and work. The route to market for our products is into the automotive industry directly, but is also being commissioned by NHS and criminal justice/mental health services as a way to introduce those in secure environments to potential future work opportunities.
These digital developments form part of the charity's strategy for embracing digital innovation to better serve our client base and grow the market we are able to serve beyond those in our local areas.

A fantastic and fast-growing charity focused on providing support and advice for carers of children is seeking a Payroll Manager on a part-time (3 days per week) permanent basis.
With headquarters in London, the role is offered on a hybrid basis – with 1 day per week required onsite. The charity has a turnover of around £7 million, with approximately 80 staff. Their focus is specifically to provide support for kinship carers of children – grandparents, siblings and other family members who support children when parents are unable to provide care.
The Payroll Manager role will make up part of a new finance team structure. The role reports to the Head of Finance, and other team members include a Senior Finance Officer and Finance Director. The role is paying £42,000 (FTE / pr-rata) inclusive of London weighting. Please note a fully-remote option is available, however in this instance London weighting would not apply, so the FTE/prorate salary would be £38,774 per annum.
The role will cover responsibility for all payroll operations, ensuring that all payments are accurate and on time and that appropriate and accurate information is provided to the Head of Finance, HMRC, pension providers and other external bodies. The payroll is run by an external bureau. You will also be required to support the Head of Finance with across a wide range of financial accounting duties.
The charity has recently implemented a new finance system (Business Central) and has secured some new grants and contracts, so there may be the chance to grow and progress as the charity continues on this path.
Typical duties will include:
-Ensure the timely processing of monthly payroll, including absence and statutory leave as well as various categories of staff payments and deductions; maintaining a separation of duties with relevant HR colleagues
-Check all payroll and pension deductions each month and resolve queries with the payroll bureau as necessary; ensuring that an appropriate and up to date audit trail is maintained which include FINAL reports.
-Ensure timely payments are issued to HMRC, pension providers and in respect of other payroll deductions to enable Kinship to comply with its statutory obligations
-To be proactive in the identification and resolution of any pay anomalies, errors, issues; ensuring that payroll reports are reconciled monthly and agree with control account values
-To contribute to knowledge management and building expertise within the Finance/People teams with regard to payroll; identify process improvements to eliminate exceptions, errors and omissions of data.

Keep Britain Tidy has a new opportunity for a Project Manager to manage the Chewing Gum Task Force programme. The Chewing Gum Task Force is a partnership between Defra, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in Northern Ireland, Scottish Government and Welsh Government and chewing gum producers including Mars Wrigley and Perfetti Van Melle which aims to clean up historic gum staining from UK high streets and change behaviour so that more people bin their gum.
The Project Manager will lead on overall administration of the scheme and manage the cleansing grant programme for councils, working alongside partner organisation Behaviour Change. In Years 1 and 2 of the scheme, participating councils have seen reductions in gum littering of up to 80% in the first two months. Now in Year 3, we will shortly distribute more than £1.2m funding to councils across the UK.
This is an exciting role within a fast-paced charity. You will have a proven track record in project management, ideally in environmental projects and/or grant schemes. Excellent organisational and record keeping skills are a must, along with the ability to form good working relationships with Chewing Gum Task Force stakeholders.

About the Role
