These numbers are both unacceptable and heartbreaking.\r\n\r\nSo it makes sense if you want to get involved. And what\u2019s more, you can build a meaningful, long-term career helping to protect the most vulnerable people in our society.\r\n\r\nBut what skills do you need, what positions are open to you and how do you get started in the first place? Let\u2019s explore how helping victims of abuse can be turned into a career."},{"acf_fc_layout":"single_image","menu_title":"","image":11900,"image_link":"","image_link_new_tab":false},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_content","menu_title":"Building the right skills to help victims of abuse","content":"<h2>Building the right skills to help victims of abuse<\/h2>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/careeradvice\/career-guides\/social-worker-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Certain innate qualities<\/a> make you a good fit for this type of work. But it\u2019s not a job for everybody. First and foremost, you need to be able to communicate well. You\u2019ll also need to be patient; some individuals don\u2019t want your help right away. They may be scared to speak out.\r\n\r\nIt\u2019s also important to be non-judgmental, sympathetic and sensitive. You need to realise that each survivor has his or her own circumstances and be perceptive of their difficulties.\r\n\r\nIf you\u2019re planning on working with domestic violence victims directly you also need to educate yourself beforehand. You may not be a legal expert, but when asked a question about restraining orders, <a href=\"https:\/\/requestlegalhelp.com\/restraining-order-violations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how the orders can be violated<\/a> and what the penalty is for doing so, you need to be able to give a comprehensive answer that will benefit the survivor.\r\n\r\nIt will also be valuable to know the various <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/about\/nice-communities\/social-care\/quick-guides-for-social-care\/therapeutic-interventions-after-abuse-and-neglect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">therapeutic interventions<\/a> that are provided to child victims of abuse. Every age group needs a certain type of intervention after the abuse has taken place and knowing which actions have been proven to work for each one can go a long way to helping you make a lasting difference.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_content","menu_title":"What professions are available in this field?","content":"<h2>What professions are available in this field?<\/h2>\r\nNow that you know the attributes needed when working with domestic violence victims, it\u2019s time to explore career possibilities. The most direct way is to work for an organisation that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/jobs?keywords=abuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">helps abuse survivors<\/a>. You can either work on the \u2018front line\u2019 with survivors and witnesses one-on-one, or you can fill a supporting role.\r\n\r\nWithout these supporting roles, the organisation wouldn\u2019t be able to do its job. Supporting roles include positions in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/careeradvice\/how-to-get-into-a-fundraising-career\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fundraising<\/a>, bid writing, human resources and communications, just to name a few.\r\n\r\nYou can also consider professions that are not directly focused on abuse but are faced with it, nonetheless. Victims need advocates, and that could not be truer than in education.\r\n\r\nIf you become a teacher, for example, you\u2019ll help children with both emotional and social concerns, and according to UK law, if a child is known or suspected of being abused or neglected, it is a teacher\u2019s duty \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk\/ukgwa\/20221215014847\/https:\/\/www.iicsa.org.uk\/key-documents\/7025\/view\/mandatory-reporting-seminar-existing-obligations-reporting-child-sexual-abuse.-briefing-note.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to take reasonable steps to prevent harm<\/a> to those to whom they owe a duty of care\u2019.\r\n\r\nWhen looking into career options, take the time to examine the profession\u2019s code of ethics and how that code helps or harms victims of abuse. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnabuzz.com\/cna-guide\/cna-code-ethics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">codes of ethics for certified nursing assistants (CNAs)<\/a> and other healthcare assistants say that their number one focus is \u2018to preserve life and ease patient suffering\u2019 regardless of race, religion and ethnicity, and to always consider each patient\u2019s individual needs.\r\n\r\nDoes this reflect what you hope to do in your quest to help victims of abuse? Volunteering will teach you the ins-and-outs of the organisation you\u2019re considering, teach you new skills and give you something worthwhile to put on your CV. In some cases, you may even have the opportunity to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/careeradvice\/volunteer-to-employee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turn a volunteer position into a paying job<\/a>.\r\n\r\nOne place worth volunteering is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/careeradvice\/helping-vulnerable-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">children\u2019s charity<\/a>. Not only will it let you test the waters to see if the organisation is right for you, but you\u2019ll also feel good knowing that you\u2019re serving a vulnerable population. Children are already the most defenceless members of our society, and those who are serviced by children\u2019s charities are at the top of the list.\r\n\r\nYou can also volunteer to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stylist.co.uk\/long-reads\/domestic-abuse-statistics-volunteer-work-domestic-violence-helpline\/202040\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">answer phones at a domestic violence helpline<\/a> such as the National Domestic Violence Helpline, which was launched in 2003. Doing so would help you hone your listening skills and teach you about the practical side of the charity sector, such as housing law.\r\n\r\nShifts are generally quite flexible, usually in four-hour blocks.
