Bullying is a very serious issue, and it\u2019s vital to address it wherever it arises. So how should you behave if you find yourself the victim of workplace bullying at a charity?<\/span><\/p>\r\n&nbsp;"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_content","menu_title":"What is workplace bullying?","content":"<h2>What is workplace bullying?<\/h2>\r\nThere\u2019s no legal definition of bullying. But it\u2019s usually described as repeated behaviour intentionally designed\u00a0to hurt someone, either physically or emotionally.\r\n\r\nExamples of workplace bullying in charities could include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>somebody spreading false rumours about you<\/li>\r\n \t<li>your team disregarding your comments during a meeting<\/li>\r\n \t<li>your line manager treating you noticeably differently to their other reports \u2013 for example\u00a0by allowing others to go on a training course, but not you<\/li>\r\n \t<li>persistently being given heavier workloads than your colleagues<\/li>\r\n \t<li>not being included in social events.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nIf you\u2019re being treated unfairly or differently because of who you are, based on factors such as your age, gender or sexual orientation, this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/discrimination-your-rights\/what-you-can-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">counts as discrimination<\/a> under the Equality Act.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone wp-image-13164 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/charityjob.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/muhammad-faiz-zulkeflee-z0-MQoZrAS8-unsplash-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"bullying in the workplace\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" \/>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_content","menu_title":"What you can do\u00a0","content":"<h2>What you can do<\/h2>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_content","menu_title":"1. You should<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> explain how their behaviour makes you feel. It\u2019s also a good idea to keep a record of the bullying.\u00a0That way, you can present a factual record of the incidents that have occurred over time. Be sure to include details of how the bullying made you feel, any witnesses to what happened and any evidence that you\u2019ve managed to gather, including screenshots, emails or social media posts.\r\n\r\nIt\u2019s also worth contacting your trade union representative for support. You have a statutory right to be accompanied by a work colleague or trade union official to the hearing of your grievance, if it comes to that. If you don\u2019t already have a representative, there are several trade unions covering the charity sector. Even if there\u2019s no policy, your employer must protect you while you\u2019re at work. This is their legal duty.\r\n\r\nIn the charity sector, there\u2019s often no specific HR team and both resources and time are scarce. Gov.uk advises that if the action taken by your workplace is insufficient, and the bullying isn't resolved, you can make a formal complaint using your employer\u2019s grievance procedure. If this still doesn\u2019t work, you can take legal action at an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/employment-tribunals\/taking-a-case-to-an-employment-tribunal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">employment tribunal<\/a>.\r\n\r\nIf a serious bullying incident takes place, your charity should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/following-collaborative-project-commission-clarifies-bullying-and-harassment-roles-and-responsibilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report this to the Charity Commission<\/a>.
