But a recent survey by the Department for Work and Pensions, revealed that 866,000 individuals aged 50 to 64 are either actively seeking work, or are inactive but are willing or would like to work. With many people in this age group having valuable experience and knowledge that would benefit a great deal of charities, we take a look at some charity job search tips for older workers.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_content","menu_title":"","content":"<h2>Entering the charity sector was tougher than I'd imagined<\/h2>\r\nWhen I decided to make the move to the charity sector, I thought it would be reasonably straightforward. I had valuable experience, I had worked at a senior level for years in impressive companies, I had led teams of various sizes, I got results and I was prepared to take a pay cut.\r\n\r\nI\u2019d be snapped up\u2014right? I found the opposite was true. My network was in the corporate sector. To third sector hiring managers I had no reputation, I wasn\u2019t on their radar. And ironically I\u2019d ignored the foundations of marketing: to understand your audience and tell a compelling story that can change behaviour.\r\n\r\nWould a hiring manager care that I had launched TV channels and smartphones? If anything, it probably put them off. My CV explained what I\u2019d done, but that held little meaning for them. I was starting in the wrong place. What I should have done was thought about what the hiring manager needed, and how to demonstrate through my experience that I had the qualities and skills they were searching for.\r\n\r\nHere are my charity job search tips for older workers:\r\n\r\n&nbsp;"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_content","menu_title":"1. Explain your transferable skills ","content":"<h2><strong>1. Leave no doubt as to how your skills are transferable<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nDon\u2019t list what you\u2019ve done in any great detail on your CV. Instead, focus on your skills and how you\u2019ll use them in the advertised role. A quick search of what all employers are looking for throws up communication skills, teamwork, adaptability, problem-solving, leadership, time-management and creativity. What examples can you give of how you\u2019ve used these skills?\r\n\r\n[button text=\"Find a charity job\" url=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/jobs\" style=\"yellow\" size=\"large\" align=\"center\" new_window=\u201d1\u2033]\r\n\r\n&nbsp;"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_content","menu_title":"2. Show your passion for the cause","content":"<h2><strong>2. Demonstrate your empathy for the cause <\/strong><\/h2>\r\nIf you search for what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/careeradvice\/top-skills-charities-look-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charity employers are looking for<\/a> there are additional things mentioned\u2014enthusiasm and dedication for your chosen charitable cause, commercial\/business awareness, pro-activity and flexibility. Research the charity. Explain why you have an affinity with what they do and give examples of how your personal values align with their cause.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone wp-image-12749 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/careeradvice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/older-candidates-remote-interview.jpg\" alt=\"Older couple laughing together in front of a laptop. Over-qualified? Directly address it<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nAre you applying for a role more junior than the level you\u2019ve previously worked at? Will you be earning less? There may be an assumption that you\u2019ll get bored, or won\u2019t stay. Don\u2019t tiptoe around a perceived mismatch\u2014explain outright in your cover letter why the role is attractive to you. Interviewers will want to know if older workers view a lower-level position as a temporary situation, or want to work at this level long-term.\r\n\r\nRemember that many charities are stretched thin and only have limited resources. If you\u2019re faced with several candidates and one has no previous charity experience, the manager will need to spend more of their already-stretched time helping the newcomer understand the culture. Who would you pick?\r\n\r\nThink about what you can include in your application that will address this. Use your commercial experience to your advantage<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nAn HR lead from a large charity told me they actively recruit from outside the sector because those with a commercial background tend to be more comfortable around numbers and metrics.\r\n\r\nCharities are dependent on funding and as the market shifts they need to diversify their income streams. So one of my top charity job search tips for older workers is to give examples of how any commercial experience you have will benefit the charity.\r\n\r\nHow have you proved impact? You may have experience of things that a corporate has been able to invest in that a charity wouldn\u2019t. Your commercial perspective is an asset, but it\u2019s up to you to explain why.\r\n\r\n[button text=\"Find your next role\" url=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/jobs\" style=\"yellow\" size=\"large\" align=\"center\" new_window=\u201d1\u2033]\r\n\r\n&nbsp;"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_content","menu_title":"5. Show you can adapt to a new culture<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nAnother reservation some charities have is that older workers coming in for the first-time will rush around suggesting how to improve things. Non-profits tend to be more cautious and risk-averse and therefore can be less open to people who they think are potentially going to rock the boat or be too impatient.\r\n\r\nThis environment is most likely very different to what you\u2019re used to, so it can be helpful to give examples of where you\u2019ve been flexible and adapted to a different culture. What might they think about managing someone older, with more experience? If you\u2019re at interview stage then be proactive in addressing this.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/libres.uncg.edu\/ir\/uncg\/f\/A_Cox_Multigenerational_2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research shows that co-generational teams are more productive and creative.<\/a> Teams can solve more complex problems with a mixed-age workforce because different age groups think differently. Your age is an asset if you make it one.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_content","menu_title":"7. Get a foot in the door","content":"<h2><strong>7. Get a foot in the door<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nDo you know anyone who works in a charity who can offer advice or introduce you to someone who works in the discipline you\u2019re interested in? Many people are generous with their time and will make time for a coffee. That\u2019s how my eventual move to the sector started\u2014with a coffee and me asking for advice.\r\n\r\nYou could also look for project work, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/careeradvice\/volunteer-to-employee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voluntary work<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/jobs?contracttype=temporary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interim contracts<\/a>\u2014anything that will give you some charity experience to add to your CV.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_content","menu_title":"8. Believe in yourself","content":"<h2><strong>8. Believe in yourself<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nI had days when I never thought I\u2019d make the switch and almost gave up. On those days I\u2019d look at my CV and remind myself what I was capable of. Believe in yourself. You know who you are. You know your value. That\u2019s the story you need to tell.\r\n\r\nSo there are my charity job search tips for older workers.
