Video interviews have become much more popular in the last few years, especially for the first round, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/employmentandlabourmarket\/peopleinwork\/employmentandemployeetypes\/articles\/ishybridworkingheretostay\/2022-05-23\">more than a third of organisations<\/a> now allow employees to work from home at least a few days a week.\r\n\r\nWe\u2019ll walk you through some of the basics in current interview etiquette.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_content","menu_title":"Do your research","content":"<h2><strong>Do your research<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nMaking sure that you take the time to thoroughly research the organisation and its competitors will put you at a great advantage in the interview. Especially in the charity sector, organisations are looking for someone who\u2019s passionate about the work they do and understands how their organisation operates.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_content","menu_title":"Practise","content":"<h2><strong>Practise<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nWhen you\u2019re nervous and under pressure, you may find that you stumble over your words more and struggle to remember things that you had no trouble recalling before. This is why it\u2019s best to have a few examples prepared in advance for each of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/careeradvice\/hardest-job-interview-questions\/\">most common interview questions<\/a>.\r\n\r\nIf you\u2019re really nervous, it can be tempting to go too far with this and memorise answers word-for-word. But this doesn\u2019t allow for any flexibility and will sound rehearsed. Instead, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/careeradvice\/star-method-in-an-interview\/\">find a structure for answering questions<\/a> that works well for you and familiarise yourself with it. With that said, don\u2019t let your nerves make you panic and stop you from coming across as confident.\r\n\r\nCheck your posture, and make sure your arms aren\u2019t crossed as this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proquest.com\/openview\/52442af596bbd7cc0220950cc1a9a3f2\/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&amp;cbl=2029989\">can make you seem closed off and defensive<\/a>. If your interview is in person, firmly shake hands with your interviewers and make eye contact as often as you can. If it\u2019s over a video call, make sure you have your camera switched on and are looking at it.\r\n\r\nSome people find that they think best when they can fidget. If you do this, make sure it\u2019s discreet so that it isn\u2019t distracting the interviewers and drawing attention away from what you\u2019re saying.\r\n\r\nTurn off your phone so that it doesn\u2019t buzz or make a noise. Even if the interviewers can\u2019t hear this, it could throw you off your train of thought. If you\u2019re on a video call, try to sit somewhere where you won\u2019t be disturbed. Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you can\u2019t control everything in your environment. To deal with this you could consider investing in a headset that filters out background noise.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_content","menu_title":"Dress appropriately","content":"<h2><strong>Dress appropriately<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nAnother important part of interview etiquette is how you dress. Even if the organisation doesn\u2019t have a dress code, it\u2019s best to be safe and wear smart clothes. You can\u2019t make a bad impression by dressing too smartly, but you can by dressing too informally, so it\u2019s always better to be cautious.\r\n\r\nOn a video call, it can be tempting to think that dress code doesn\u2019t matter, but the interviewers can still tell what you\u2019re wearing. You don\u2019t have to go all out, but putting on a shirt or smart top shows that you\u2019ve put some effort in and prepared for the interview in advance.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone wp-image-12740\" src=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/careeradvice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/job-hunting-myths-debunked-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"job hunting myths debunked\" width=\"769\" height=\"405\" \/>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_content","menu_title":"Be on time","content":"<h2><strong>Be on time<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nIf your interview is in person, making sure you\u2019re on time (ideally a few minutes early) will send a good impression, but it also gives you time to get your thoughts together. Rushing and stressing about being late will not leave you in a good frame of mind once you get to the interview. Plus, getting there early allows you to get a feel for the organisation and the office layout.\r\n\r\nSometimes, even with the best of planning, things will occur to make you late. If this happens, don\u2019t panic. Inform your contact as soon as you know you\u2019re going to be late and tell them what time you expect to be there.\r\n\r\nFor video calls, it\u2019s important to test your tech in advance. Perhaps you could set up a test call with a friend or family member to check that your sound, video and Wi-Fi quality are good.\r\n\r\nWhen you\u2019ve spent time on an application, you expect to hear back about whether you were successful or not. So it\u2019s reasonable to suggest that when recruiters have spent time reading through your application and scheduling an interview, they\u2019ll expect to hear back from you.\r\n\r\nIf you need to reschedule or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/careeradvice\/how-to-cancel-an-interview\/\">cancel the interview<\/a>, it\u2019s good interview etiquette to let your contact know well in advance.
