Small or Local Charities<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"CharityLocal charities generally conduct extremely valuable work on minimal resources, providing services that would be greatly missed by local communities. Examples of local charities include The Hunslet Club<\/strong><\/a> and Gipton Supported Independent Living (GIPSIL<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Working for local charities requires real dedication to the cause and consistently creative problem solving to overcome barriers. With very small charities, there is often an ‘all hands on deck’ culture where everyone mucks in and does a bit of everything. Funding for paid roles in small charities are limited, however, there is plenty of room for autonomy and often flexitime\/working from home is allowed.<\/p>\n

Regional\/National<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"charityRegional charities can be standalone, or a local arm\u00a0of a wider organisation such as Groundwork<\/strong><\/a> or Mind<\/strong><\/a>. Branches like these\u00a0are independent charities run by local people, but are affiliated to the larger organisation – for example, Leeds Mind<\/strong><\/a> is responsible for its own funding and services, but shares the same principles and ethos as the wider Mind charity. Often in this situation, the main charity raises awareness and leads campaigns, but the regional\/local branches provide the help and support directly to the service users.\u00a0National charities such as Cancer Research UK<\/strong><\/a> and The Alzheimer’s Society<\/strong><\/a> are the household names of the UK Third Sector.<\/p>\n

\"NGOInternational Organisations and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) work across the globe, often tackling issues such as Human Rights and Peace building, amongst others.\u00a0\u00a0Examples of this type of organisation are Oxfam<\/strong><\/a> and Rainforest Alliance<\/strong><\/a>. International charities are\u00a0large scale strategic operations\u00a0and are dealing with billions of pounds per year. Despite the tremendous amounts of practical work that goes on, these organisations require extensive administrative and strategic support, so there are plenty of office-based opportunities that don’t involve travel.<\/p>\n

\"socialSocial Enterprises are businesses with a social purpose; so they make money which is given back to the community in some form. There are a variety of different organisation types that are based on this principle,\u00a0including\u00a0Community Interest Company (CIC), Co-operative and Social Business. There are slight differences in their governance but the general principle is based on making money for good. Examples of Social Enterprises are Bounce Back<\/strong><\/a> and The Enterprise Foundation<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Working for a small charity size requires real dedication to the cause and consistently creative problem solving to overcome barriers.\r\n\r\nThere's limited funding for paid roles in small charities, so volunteers and a small group of paid staff will likely do a lot of the tasks. There\u2019s often an \u2018all hands on deck\u2019 culture where everyone mucks in and does a bit of everything. However, there\u2019s plenty of room for autonomy at small charities and they often encourage flexible working<\/a>.\r\n\r\nA smaller charity size might be for you if you\u2019re self-motivated and want a high degree of autonomy. There are fewer hoops to jump through to get your ideas approved. You\u2019ll also be calling the shots more often than not since most small charities only have one or two people working in each field.\r\n\r\nHowever, this also means you have to advocate for yourself. You\u2019ll take the slack if things fail, and you won\u2019t have as much support if your workload gets heavy. There are also fewer opportunities for career progression<\/a> because there simply aren\u2019t as many positions available to move into. And budget constraints mean that you\u2019ll be frustratingly limited at times in what you can do.\r\n\r\nSome smaller charities are a local branch of a wider organisation. They\u2019re independent charities run by local people, but affiliated to a national or international charity. Due to their larger charity size, their structure is closer to that of other sectors and roles are likely to be more specialised than in smaller charities.\r\n\r\nInternational organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) work across the globe, often tackling issues such as human rights<\/a> and peace building, amongst others.\u00a0Despite the tremendous amounts of practical work that goes on, these organisations require extensive administrative and strategic support, so there are plenty of office-based opportunities that don\u2019t involve travel.\r\n\r\nWorking for the head office of a larger organisation often allows for a smoother transition if you\u2019re switching from another sector, as the structure and positions available may be more familiar. You won\u2019t be plunged straight into the deep end and expected to have a firm grasp of all things \u2018charity\u2019.\r\n\r\nIf you\u2019re just starting your career<\/a>, you might find that working for a larger charity is easier as you won\u2019t have as much responsibility straight off the bat. There will also be plenty of people who you can go to if you need support. Since they have bigger budgets, larger charities are also more likely to be able to spend money on training.\r\n\r\nIt\u2019s a commonly held belief that larger charities pay more than smaller charities, but this isn\u2019t always the case<\/a>. It depends on the organisation and the seniority of your role.
