Charity trustees play a vital and stimulating role – ensuring the charity is reaching the very goals that it was set up to achieve. And yet, many people are unaware of these essential and rewarding positions.<\/p>\n

What is a charity Trustee?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"trustees\"A trustee is a volunteer who serves on the governing body of a charity, responsible for the general running of the organisation. Becoming a trustee is both a rewarding way to help your community, and a way to learn fantastic new skills. It\u2019s an invigorating and dynamic role, which puts you at the very heart of a charity and its work, liaising with a team of like minded people.<\/p>\n

But many people are put off by the fear of the unknown, assuming they don\u2019t have enough experience. This is simply a myth!<\/p>\n

Trustees come from all walks of life, and almost anyone can be eligible, as long as they are over 18. Charities are actively looking for trustees with a diverse range of experiences and skills, who want to make a positive difference to a community.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What are a trustee\u2019s responsibilities?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Trustees volunteer their time to make the crucial decisions about the charity’s activities, funds and future. When you become a trustee, you are accepting responsibility for looking after and directing the affairs of the charity. Trustees really are at the heart of the organisation \u2013 they must ensure they are delivering on the goals the charity was set up for, and that the charity remains solvent. This involves directing charity funds appropriately and taking care of the charity\u2019s assets.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It\u2019s a great idea for trustees to do some strong research on the charity before they start- reading Annual Reports and policies for instance. But many charities will offer relevant training to support their new trustees, or allow them to sit in on a trustee meeting as an observer. Trustees of a charity work together closely, and often form strong relationships and bonds.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Do good, feel good.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, we know becoming a trustee is a great way to do some good for a community or cause. But it’s also great for the trustee themselves! Not only do charities benefit from the various skills brought to them by their trustees, but trustees gain fantastic and impressive experience for their CVs. It\u2019s also a great way to gain a valuable insight into the workings of the charity sector.<\/p>\n

Next month, the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) will host its annual \"trustee\"Trustee Conference<\/a>. The Conference is a great opportunity for new and experienced trustees to gather together and share experiences and knowledge. It will also launch Trustees\u2019 Week<\/a>, a celebration of trusteeship that aims to highlight the fantastic work they do.<\/p>\n
