The real work of a fundraiser is to secure revenue to keep their organisation running. This is very much like a sales person. A sales person\u2019s job is to convince a potential customer that their service or product is the right one for them.\r\n\r\nThis is essentially the same with fundraising. A fundraiser will aim to convince an individual or organisation of the value of their donation, what it could bring and what it will deliver. Therefore skills and experience in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/jobs\/marketing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">marketing<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/jobs\/communications,+pr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> PR<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/jobs\/business+development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">business development<\/a> are all transferable to the charity sector. How to get into fundraising is mainly about presenting your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/careeradvice\/top-skills-charities-look-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skills and experience<\/a> as being relevant to a fundraising career. Even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/jobs?keywords=direct+marketing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">direct marketing\u00a0<\/a>can be a good place to start! These may not be the most desirable roles, but recruitment can be quite buoyant for them. Performing well at this level of fundraising can allow you to move into other areas of an organisation, or possibly a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/jobs?keywords=Fundraising+Management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">management position<\/a>.\r\n\r\nIf you have the time, or maybe if you\u2019re still a student, you can start getting some fundraising experience\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/volunteer-jobs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by volunteering<\/a>. This could increase your chances of getting that fundraising job.\r\n\r\nVolunteering is an excellent way to gain charity sector experience.\u00a0This is true even if you don\u2019t end up pursuing a fundraising career. It\u2019s worth remembering that some charities don\u2019t advertise their positions publicly. Many fundraisers don\u2019t apply through traditional means. Often the successful ones will work hard to build a great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityjob.co.uk\/careeradvice\/networking-in-the-charity-sector\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">network<\/a> in the sector.\r\n\r\nSending your CV speculatively is not always a bad idea when it comes to fundraising jobs. The art is to ensure that it finds its way to the right person. Do some research and networking. Make sure you know who your application is going to. Follow up with a phone call or e-mail if possible (but don\u2019t pester of course!).\r\n\r\nWhether it\u2019s online or at events (run by the CIOF and others) you should aim to meet, interact and network with as many fundraising professionals as possible. Take <a href=\"http:\/\/www.institute-of-fundraising.org.uk\/events-and-training\/iofevents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a look at the events the CIOF offer<\/a>, there could be something that\u2019s right for you.\r\n\r\nEven if you find your way into the charity sector through a non-fundraising role, you can aim to make the transition by building up a great list of contacts and people who could be of help.
