Chair Designate Volunteer Roles

Vision Action is a unique organisation, that works in low- and middle-income countries, supporting national governments to deliver and strengthen their eye health strategies. We work in partnership with local governments, civil society organisations, international and national NGOs, and the private sector. Our ambition is to increase equitable access to eye care services and glasses, and accelerate achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goal.

The role of the Board is to oversee the overall direction and activities of the charity, including its policies and procedures, to ensure that they are consistently in accordance with the charitable purposes defined in the objects clause in its Constitution. The Board sets and monitors the strategic direction of the charity, although the implementation of strategy is achieved through the executive team. The Board must always act in the best interests of Vision Action, taking decisions as a group and not as individuals.

1. Terms of service

For Vision Action the Trustees are Members who have been elected to serve on the Board. Vision Action’s constitution allows for up to 12 Trustees, who can serve a maximum of three consecutive terms of three years. Vision Action is a company limited by guarantee and the Trustees are its legal directors. The Trustee role is voluntary but out of pocket expenses are paid.

Trustees are appointed by the Vision Action Board of Trustees annually at the Board meeting following the Annual General Meeting. The time commitment in being a trustee involves attendance at four Board meetings per year, one of which will be an all-day strategy session. Otherwise, Board meetings are usually half a day in the afternoon of a weekday with at least half the meetings online. Papers are circulated for reading in advance.

In addition to this, it is expected that trustees attend the AGM held on a weekend and occasional Members’ Forums or other Vision Action events, which are usually arranged on the same day as a Board meeting in the evening. There may be other ad hoc meetings or online events to discuss specific topics. Trustees will be expected to commit time to receive a proper induction.

2. Main tasks

Charity Trustees have and must accept ultimate responsibility for directing the affairs of the charity and ensuring it is solvent, well-run and delivering the charitable outcomes for the benefit of the public for which it has been set up. Each Trustee will be expected to join one of the three sub-committees (Fundraising and Investment; Programmes; Finance, Administration and Remuneration). The Committees meet (in person or remotely) at least four times per year, usually timed with or in advance of the board meetings.

3. General Responsibilities

• Ensure that Vision Action complies with its governing document (i.e. its Constitution and Byelaws), charity law, and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
• Ensure that Vision Action pursues its objects as defined in its governing document.
• Ensure Vision Action applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects, i.e. it must not spend money on activities which are not included in the objects, however worthwhile they may be.
• Contribute actively to the Board’s role in the formulation and review of strategy, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.
• Safeguard the good name and values of Vision Action and maintain good relations with its members.
• Ensure that all policies are implemented, monitored and reports are acted upon, (including the policies on Harassment and Misconduct, Safeguarding, Recruitment of ex-offenders, Child Protection and Anti- Bribery).
• Strive for Vision Action to reflect the full diversity of society in all its activities.
• Ensure the financial stability of Vision Action.
• Protect and manage the property of Vision Action and ensure the proper investment of its funds.
• Appoint and support the Chief Executive Officer and monitor his/her performance.

In addition to the above statutory responsibilities, each Trustee should attend Board meetings and use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the Board reach sound decisions. This may involve leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, evaluation or other issues in which the Trustee has special expertise; and then always upholding the decisions taken by Board. Trustees are also expected to support Vision Action’s fundraising initiatives.

4. Additional Specific Responsibilities

In addition to the above, we are looking for a Trustee who can be the Chair designate and assume the role of Chair in November 2024.

Vision Action is looking for a Trustee who will be able to support us in 3 key areas:

1) Provide advice and experience at the level of Chair so that they can provide leadership to the Board of Trustees as well as the CEO

2) Act as the Chair designate until they assume the role of Chair of the Board of Trustees in November 2024.

3) Provide insight, knowledge and connections to help us build our reputation and position as a worthy international charity in the eye health sector in the UK and Internationally so that Vision Action can grow its relationship with individuals, bodies and corporates in the sector.

Person Specification

Each Trustee must have:

• A commitment to the mission and value base of Vision Action.
• A commitment to the key policies of Vision Action – on Harassment and Misconduct, Safeguarding, Whistle-blowing, Recruitment of ex-offenders, Child Protection and Anti-Bribery.
• A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort.
• Integrity.
• Strategic vision.
• Good, independent judgement.
• An ability to think creatively.
• A willingness to speak his/her mind.
• An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of trusteeship (training/information will be offered in this area).
• An ability to contribute effectively to the workings of the Vision Action Board and any sub-committees or working groups.

In addition to the above, this specific appointment is looking ideally for Trustees who have:

• Previous experience of leading and Chairing at the senior level in an organisation;
• Previous experience of governing and managing at the Board level;
• Previous Board level experience in the charity sector;
• Willingness to undertake obligatory tasks with the Charity Commission on behalf of the organisation;
• Willingness to stay updated on changes to governance issues and policies that might impact Vision Action;
• A willingness to engage in activities in the vision sector as it relates to the work of Vision Action, including fundraising.

BBS UK are looking for a new Chairperson, to lead our Board of Trustees and contribute to the development and success of our charity. 

Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a rare, complex condition that causes blindness, learning disabilities, and obesity, along with other symptoms.  BBS UK is the only UK charity dedicated to helping individuals with BBS and their loved ones. Our aim is to offer wraparound support to those impacted by BBS, to empower them to live the lives they choose, as valued members of society. 

BBS UK provides advocacy services, NHS clinic support, up-to-date publications, and events that connect our community members and help them to navigate living with Bardet-Biedl syndrome. Through these projects, we aim to ensure that those who seek our help are supported, connected, and empowered to achieve the best possible outcome. 

We have a team of eight dedicated part-time staff members who facilitate the delivery of these services, and volunteers who assist with our events. We support approximately 550 individuals with BBS each year.

The role: 

We are looking for an experienced, professional and compassionate Chairperson to lead our Board of Trustees, many of whom have lived experience of BBS.

Time commitment: 

The expected time commitment for our Chairperson is a minimum of four Trustee meetings per year via Zoom (lasting approximately three hours for each meeting); in-person attendance at our annual conference and strategy day; occasional overnight stay at a central location may be required.  Regular meetings with our Operations Manager and routine monitoring and response of emails is also required. 

We are looking for a new Chair of Finance, who is also an ex-officio non-executive member of Chapter, our governing body, due to the retirement of our current Chair.

In late 2023 the Cathedral adopted a new governance structure and will become a registered charity in March 2024 when all members of Chapter, the governing body, will become Trustees. 

As a non-executive trustee your role will be vital in the oversight of the overall management and administration of the Cathedral and ensuring that the Vision and Strategy formed in 2020 remains relevant.  Working collaboratively with other trustees you will give strategic direction to the Cathedral, set overall policy, define goals and evaluate outcomes.

The role of Chair of Finance is both strategic and operational.  The Chair works strategically to assist Chapter in ensuring good financial oversight, but also has a practical hands-on role working with the Chief Operating Officer and Finance Officer to enable the effective financial management of the Cathedral. 
 
The successful candidate must have recent and relevant financial experience and a recognised financial qualification is preferred. The role may either suit someone who is currently working in a financial field or who has very recently retired from such in the last two or three years. They will be either a communicant member of the Church of England, or of a church with which it is in communion and an enhanced DBS check will also be required. A full induction programme and ongoing training is offered to enable members to deliver their responsibilities.

We are looking for new trustees, including a Senior Non-Executive Member (SNEM) who are willing to build on the commitment, enthusiasm and energy of current members who are nearing the end of their terms of office and continue to broaden the diversity of thinking in Chapter.

Manchester Central Foodbank are a small but rapidly-growing charity at a pivotal moment in our evolution, and we are looking for an exceptional person to take on the role of Treasurer / Trustee.

We have recently established a finance committee, to ensure effective financial controls within our organisation. You will chair this committee of volunteers to support the foodbank in achieving its financial objectives. The finance committee and trustee board both meet every 4-6 weeks. Most of these meetings are online, with an occasional hybrid meeting.

About Manchester Central Foodbank
Manchester Central Foodbank (MCFB) is a Trussell Trust-affiliated food bank, with a centre in Central, North, and East Manchester. We were established in Ardwick in 2013 by students at the Manchester Universities’ Catholic Chaplaincy, making us the first student-led foodbank in the country. Since then we have grown significantly, expanding into Harpurhey and Openshaw, but our goal to end the need for food banks in Manchester has never changed.

We are one of 6 Trussell Trust-affiliated food banks in Manchester, and one of 19 in Greater Manchester. We work closely with our colleagues across the city, to develop and work towards a strong network of support for people locked in poverty. We know that the problem of poverty cannot be solved by giving out food alone, so we work hard to give wrap-around support to our clients, and to campaign for real change in our community.

Role responsibilities
General financial oversight:

• Liaise with MCF Managers, external accountants and auditors about financial matters.
• Oversee and present budgets, accounts and financial statements to the Board.
• Ensure that robust and effective systems, policies and controls are in place for finance and investment.
• Ensure an effective system of delegation for finance is in place.
• Ensure that record-keeping and accounts meet the conditions of funders and statutory bodies
• Ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
• Ensure suitable financial roles are in place to fulfil our finance function.

Financial performance, reporting, planning & budgeting:

• Advise on the financial implications of strategic and operational plans.
• Oversee regular reports on the organisation’s financial position
• Ensure effective monitoring and reporting.
• Liaise with designated staff for accounts preparation and audit, as required.
• Present accounts at the AGM.
• Advise on MCFs reserves policy and our investment policy.

Banking, book-keeping, record-keeping and payroll:

• Oversee bank account management and that appropriate systems for bookkeeping, payments, lodgements & petty cash are in place.
• Ensure everyone handling money keeps proper records and documentation
• Payment and recording of all supplier invoices
• Recording all income received
• Preparation of monthly payroll and payment of staff
• Payment of tax and NI to the Inland Revenue
• Cash-flow management

Reconciliation of bank accounts on a monthly basis:

• Control of fixed assets
• Ensure proper records are kept.
• Ensure required insurances are in place.

As the need for food banks has grown, Manchester Central Foodbank has committed to addressing the causes of food poverty, while continuing to deliver emergency food parcels. As part of this, Manchester Central Foodbank is involved in several projects, with various funding sources. This includes the Trussell Trust’s national Pathfinder programme, with foodbanks involved developing and delivering their own plan for reducing the need for their services locally. You will play a pivotal role in achieving our vision for the central Manchester area.

You will get to know our enthusiastic and dedicated staff, trustees and other volunteers. As treasurer and a trustee board member, you will build on your governance, leadership and strategic skills. You will also be an essential part of shaping the future strategy of the foodbank and will be able to see the positive impact on the people of Manchester.

The Treasurer is a key role supporting Trustees and Committee Members by ensuring the finances of the KPA are properly managed in line with Charity Commission reporting, accounting and financial governance requirements.

GSTTKPA is going through an exciting period of change. As a result, we are seeking to recruit new Trustees to support our ambitious and innovative change programme, so we can continue to achieve the aims and objectives of the charity.

For this role, we are seeking a qualified accountant with charity experience to be both our Treasurer and a Trustee.

The role requires someone with commitment, enthusiasm and a good understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with being a kidney patient.  You will have a commitment to equality; celebrate diversity and be responsive to the needs of different groups and individuals within society.
