Role Summary

As the Director of Research and Public Affairs you lead a team working across the full range of research work (including commissioning, grant-making and in-house research) and public affairs work (including policy analysis, advocacy work and mobilising our activists). You also contribute to the charity’s strategies, leadership and governance as a member of the Executive Team. Ultimately, your role is to generate new knowledge; and communicate knowledge, ideas and emotions to change hearts and minds, creating tangible reductions in alcohol harm across the UK.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Leadership, strategy & planning

1. Lead the research and public affairs functions at Alcohol Change UK.

2. Produce and deliver plans across our research and public affairs work programmes that are ambitious for change (impact), realistic given our resources, and consistent with our strategy, our other work programmes, and our values.

3. Set budgets, tightly control costs and identify opportunities for making savings, growing income and making the case for investment.

4. Appropriately monitor and evaluate our research and public affairs work with a view to knowing, growing and showing the impact we make.

Research

5. Work closely with the CEO, Policy and Research Manager, R&P sub-committee and Wales Office to determine and oversee the charity’s programme of commissioned research, research grants, and in-house research.

6. Ensure that all research is designed with impact-in-mind and, once complete, that it delivers on that impact through active and ongoing communication of the findings to the right audiences with the right messages through the right channels.

7. Lead the research function to be the central hub for the charity on the topic of alcohol harm and its solutions, staying on top of new research.

8. Influence the research spending of other agencies (e.g. NIHR) with a view to maximising funding into alcohol research in general.

Public Affairs

9. Lead and manage the charity’s public affairs activity, deploying the CEO, Research & Policy Officer and other staff as a team.

10.  Lead our work with external alliances, such as the Alcohol Health Alliance and the Alcohol and Families Alliance, and on the APPG on Alcohol Harm.

11.  Develop excellent relationships with Parliamentarians, civil servants, charities and other important institutional actors in our field.

12.  Build Campaigner journeys for our engagement audience to best mobilise them to help us with our influencing work.

13.  Lead on the commissioning and management of any external public affairs agencies, parliamentary monitoring services and similar suppliers.

14.  Ensure our policy positions are kept up-to-date, based on emerging evidence and contemporary thinking, and consistent with our principles.

15.  Work closely with the Director of Engagement and Fundraising to effectively mobilise and deploy our activists, Community Champions and other supporters so they (i) make a difference, (ii) become better informed over time, and (iii) remain motivated to campaign for our cause.

16.  Work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications to influence all forms of media to better support our desired outcomes.

Team Leadership and Management

17.  Lead and manage the research and public affairs team(s), ensuring excellent line management.

18.  Lead the process of recruiting and inducting new team members, as appropriate.

19.  Proactively develop your own skills and experience as well as those of staff within your team.

Cross-organisational Role

20.  Act as a spokesperson for the charity at high profile events and across media, including radio and TV.

21.  Be an active and positive member of the charity’s Executive Team.

22.  Work with colleagues across the charity to support their work and to act as ‘one team’.

23.  Work particularly closely with colleagues in the Wales office, optimising opportunities for joint working.

24.  Contribute actively and positively to the development of charity-wide strategies and activity.

Other Duties

25.  Continually develop your knowledge of alcohol harm and solutions to it.

26.  Act as a positive ambassador for Alcohol Change UK at all times.

27.  Know, embrace and actively uphold the values of Alcohol Change UK at all times.

What the job involves

We’re looking for a Senior Black Health Equity Engagement Officer to join us in a newly created role in our Black Health Equity Team alongside a Black Health Equity Engagement Officer.

The team will support our community engagement function to build trust and engagement with Black community organisations and leaders across the UK. The purpose being to increase the awareness in Black communities of the risk of prostate cancer and to narrow the health inequalities faced by Black men.

As a Senior Black Health Equity Engagement Officer, you'll be responsible for managing the operational aspects of our charity's Black Men's Health Advisory Group. This includes scheduling meetings, planning agendas, and ensuring effective communication within the group to gather insights, support, and guidance. You'll actively engage with various groups, organisations, and networks within Black communities, building trusting relationships to spread awareness of prostate cancer. Additionally, you’ll also identify and establish ways to build strategic relationships with grassroots organisations who are best placed to deliver work and increase its impact.

You’ll help to build an understanding and knowledge of ways in which health inequalities impact Black men affected by prostate cancer (including their families) and be able to provide expert advice and partner with teams across the charity to help to tackle health inequalities.

You'll develop work plans, measure impact, and ensure that the lived experiences of Black communities shape our work. Additionally, you'll work with colleagues to increase our number of Black volunteers to help make a bigger difference in communities.

What we want from you

We’re looking for candidates who understand health inequalities and are able to explain how they may impact Black men affected by prostate cancer. Knowledge of, or previous involvement in health awareness initiatives would be beneficial for this role, although we also value transferable skills gained from other sectors.

You’ll have experience in organising meetings or events that cater to a diverse range of participants, ensuring that various perspectives are heard and valued, especially within Black communities. You’ll ensure their lived experiences shapes any proposed solutions.

You’ll be an excellent communicator and comfortable presenting to a wide range of audiences and show credibility to those at senior levels and external stakeholders and partners. You’ll also be able to work will with a mix of teams and work together to develop and coordinate plans to benefit Black communities and raising awareness.

Please note that community events often take place on evenings or weekends – the successful candidate will need to work flexibly to attend c. one weekend event a month and take time back mid-week.

Head of UK Programmes is the senior lead on UK-wide grants and programmes, working closely with nation teams and fundraising to shape and deliver a sector leading portfolio of programmes that is evidence informed, and evidence generating, catalysing positive change for carer organisations and unpaid carers. This role requires an established social sector leader who is adept at demonstrating internal and external leadership,

You will be detail oriented and logical to provide robust programme quality and assurance expertise, yet equally comfortable to lead the organisation externally too. You will be passionate about positioning Carers Trust’s programmatic offer as relevant and additive, drawing on emerging and best practice from across our network of 126 carer organisations.

As a seasoned programmes professional your leadership accountability for UK Programmes spans from development through to implementation and you will work closely across the nations to steward and role model a joined up approach across Carers Trust’s programme cycle, leading to meaningful and coherent programming.

Role Context

ALIMA UK is in its start-up phase and is made up of a small team. This period is exciting at times unpredictable.  We need someone reliable who enjoys and has a proven track record of leading and delivering on operational projects for a business or charity while working with senior stakeholders. They should be a highly organised self-starter who is able to work autonomously and lead on projects as well as a great team player.

The role is varied and has a significant financial element, so strong numerical skills and good written communication skills are both important as well as a flexible, responsible approach. Ideally they will also have experience of, and good knowledge of, the charity sector in the UK.

This role is posted as a one year contract as the needs of the business are changing as the organisation develops. At the end of the year the needs of ALIMA will be reviewed and there may be scope to further shape the role, depending on the needs of the business and funding available at the time.

Part 1: Role Purpose:

We are seeking an outstanding Programmes Officer for an exciting opportunity to support Street Child’s programme portfolio in Liberia and Sierra Leone. This role will cut across Street Child’s programming in the region, including a specific focus on the $12.8m Education for Every Child Today (EFECT) Project which aims to enrol 96,000 out of school children in school across West Africa over a 4-year period.

The key objectives of this role are to work closely with Street Child’s federal partners to support the effective implementation of adaptive programming, and to support accurate and timely donor reporting across a range of institutional, trust & foundations, and corporate donors. The ideal candidate will have strong written and excel skills, with experience of MEAL and financial management processes. The role will engage regular, detailed interaction with Street Child’s UK and European fundraising community.

The role holder will work in close collaboration with Street Child’s regional Head of Programmes, based in Freetown, as well as partner Programmes, MEAL and Finance teams to coordinate timely and quality implementation and reporting across the programmes portfolio.

Based in Monrovia, whilst serving a regional brief, the role-holder will be expected to be especially involved in supporting the programmes, and wider life, of Street Child of Liberia. This aspect of the role in particular demands a confident, ‘self-sufficient’ and motivated personality – who is excited by the opportunity and attendant career potential, as opposed to being overawed by the inevitable, multi-dimensional challenges.

Part 2: Key Responsibilities:

Reporting & Programme Funding Engagement – 35%

• Review narrative and financial quarterly reporting from country teams and provide feedback.
• Lead on the consolidation of narrative reporting (low-mid value donors) for a variety of donors within the portfolio.
• Ensure regular information flow to Street Child communications and fundraising teams, inclusive of collection and drafting of case studies and photos.
• Supporting income-generation opportunities - potentially including supporting donor visits, in-country donor engagement and broad-based support to the group’s global programme-funding efforts for both Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Programme & MEAL Management – 35%

• Work in collaboration with national partner and cross-country implementation teams across Liberia and Sierra Leone to ensure quality and timely implementation of project activities.
• Work alongside social, enterprise and education teams across both countries to support a joined-up approach to project implementation and MEAL, ensuring relevant data are collected with due care and utilised for project planning, reporting and learning.
• Provide strong support to EFECT programme staff and partners in Liberia & Sierra Leone in programme and MEAL department.
• Alongside colleagues provide training, guidance and advice to partner delivery staff to ensure effective and accurate use of programme documents and tools.
• In liaison with Safeguarding Focal Points monitor safeguarding policies ensuring adequate implementation of policies and procedures, and support to close feedback loops with partners & project participants.
• Provide capacity strengthening to Street Child Colleagues where possible.

Financial Support – 25%

• Support the country teams in compiling requisitions in line with programme forecasts and budgets.
• Support on the collation of financial reporting requirements for low-mid value donors.
• Support on tracking of donors & match funding within the EFECT programme.

Other – 5%

• Coordinating staff, stakeholders and donor visits.

About TASO

The Centre for Transforming Access and Student Outcomes in Higher Education (TASO) is an affiliate What Works Centre, and part of the UK Government’s What Works Movement. Our vision is to eliminate equality gaps in higher education (HE). Our mission is to improve lives through evidence-informed practice.

TASO was set up in 2019 and became an independent charity in April 2021. Our work focuses on the generation, synthesis and dissemination of high-quality evidence about effective practice in widening participation and student outcomes. We primarily focus on developing and disseminating causal evidence. 

The Role

The Head of Communications and Engagement will lead TASO’s communications and engagement work plan to raise the profile of the organisation. They will also lead on TASO’s evidence mobilisation work plan, working with the Chief Executive, to ensure TASO’s research and evaluation outputs are effectively disseminated. 

This will involve ensuring a strategic approach to all communications activities, leading on the delivery of external-facing materials and publications, overseeing a vibrant social media presence and events programme. The role will have overall responsibility for a website redevelopment project over the next year. 

• Ensure a strategic and effective approach to communications, dissemination and stakeholder engagement.

• Lead on the design, branding and dissemination of innovative and engaging communications – both print and online, including oversight of the editorial and publication process for all TASO research reports and resources. 

• Lead on TASO’s evidence mobilisation plan, working with the Chief Executive and Research and Evaluation Team to ensure research outputs are effectively disseminated and achieve impact.

• Support the Chief Executive on delivering TASO’s policy aims. Lead on engagement with and monitoring of Westminster activities (e.g. select committees, reports, consultations) and liaise with key communications and policy stakeholders in the Department for Education, Office for Students and other relevant bodies.

• Take overall responsibility for TASO’s online and social media presence. This will involve overseeing a critical website redevelopment project over the next year and also includes oversight of the creation, upkeep and management of digital channels and content.

• Lead on TASO’s media relations, producing high quality press releases and news stories for the website, liaising with journalists, as appropriate.

• Lead on the delivery of a programme of stakeholder engagement events for a wide range of audiences. The events will range from small training sessions to larger events including publication launches and an annual conference.

• Provide line management for communications staff who will support all activities – including two direct reports and overseeing a team of three. 

• Undertake projects and duties as required or requested by the Chief Executive or broader team.

Job Purpose: The project aims to deliver a range of trauma-informed learning and development opportunities to women impacted by the criminal justice system. Delivered in our Manchester and Trafford women’s centres, these gender responsive activities, co-produced with women with lived experience, will provide personal and practical skill development that meets their needs and supports their aspirations around employment or education, including a focus on wellbeing and practical learning.

Key Responsibility Areas

1. Co-ordinate and deliver a schedule of trauma informed and gender responsive workshops that aim to address wellbeing and reduce barriers women impacted by the CJS face in accessing employment or education opportunities.
2. Maintain case management systems to ensure accurate and timely data recording.
3. Develop and maintain relationships with key partners and stakeholders, such as lived experience groups, education, training and employment networks and local services.
4. Create opportunities for women impacted by the criminal justice system to input into the programme, such as co-production, and peer supporters
