Job description

Why work for us?

Wanted: an inspiring, influential and accomplished Head of Communications with experience of media relations work in an international context.

It’s an important time to join CARE International UK (CIUK) as the Head of Communications. With a new organisational strategy under development for 2030, we need a leader who can take forward our communications strategy encompassing brand, media and digital communications aimed at our key audiences including individuals, policy makers, donors and corporate partners.

With a good culture of integrated working across communications, fundraising and advocacy, we are determined to do things differently.   Our recent #March4Women campaign is just one example of a fully integrated campaign, led by the communications team, which included all our target audiences.

In addition to the UK objectives, we also have a commitment to improve communications globally and to contribute to advocacy goals - and this role is essential in working with counterparts throughout the confederation on global initiatives.

About you

As an experienced, strategic and dynamic communications professional – you will have a proven track record of leading a major communications function. Your broad ranging experience will span brand, press and PR, editorial content and digital.

With experience of leading large integrated campaigns, you will have worked closely with colleagues across fundraising, advocacy and programmes – building relationships and influencing at a high-level. And with your strategic mind – you will have taken a communications function on a journey to success.

About the role

Reporting to the Executive Director, Partnerships and Communications, you will be responsible for leading all media, content and digital communications. This role is essential to achieving our advocacy and programmes goals. The team consists of Press & PR, Editorial Content and Digital – providing support across CIUK to deliver on the CIUK strategy, and in turn contributing to the CARE Global Programme Strategy. As a key member of CIUK leadership team, you will work with colleagues across the organisation on major strategic issues and organisational culture.

As a member of the global communications team, you will work closely with peers across CARE member offices to share knowledge and contribute to global communications objectives and crisis comms.

As CIUK is a member of the DEC, at times of humanitarian emergency you will work closely with the DEC’s communications team to generate media coverage by offering spokespeople and content.

Working with the Senior Management Team and CEO, you will advise on crisis communications, as well as lead on major pieces of strategic work which align and contribute to our Global Programme Strategy.

About CARE

CARE International is one of the world’s leading humanitarian and development charities. We fight poverty and injustice in the world’s most vulnerable and excluded communities and by 2030, CARE and our partners will support 200 million people.  We save lives in disasters and conflicts. We stand with women, girls and their communities to achieve lasting change for a better future. A member of the DEC – our humanitarian work is recognised as world-leading and we are proud to work in collaboration with our sector colleagues.

Safeguarding

CARE International UK has a zero-tolerance approach to any abuse to, sexual harassment of or exploitation of a vulnerable adult or child by any of our staff, representatives or partners. CARE International UK expects all staff to share this commitment through our Safeguarding Policy and our Code of Conduct. They are responsible for ensuring they understand and work within the remit of these policies throughout their time at CARE International UK.

Safeguarding our beneficiaries is our top priority in everything we do, including recruitment. All offers of employment at CARE International UK are subject to satisfactory references.

CARE International UK participates in the Inter Agency Misconduct Disclosure Scheme. In line with this Scheme, we will request information from successful applicants’ previous employers about any findings of sexual exploitation, sexual abuse and/or sexual harassment during employment, or incidents under investigation when the applicant left employment.

- Appropriate criminal record checks (including a Bridger check).

By submitting an application, the applicant confirms his/her understanding of these recruitment procedures.

Equality and Diversity

We are committed to Equality and value Diversity.

We are a Disability Confident Employer and particularly welcome applications from disabled people. We guarantee interviews to disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria for the role (see person specification). If you require the candidate brief or need to submit your application in an alternative format, because of a disability, please do get in touch.

We also encourage people from Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds or LGBT+ to apply for roles at CARE International UK.

Please note that in compliance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006, all job offers at Care International UK are conditional on eligibility to work in the UK.
