St John’s Churchyard, Waterloo Road, SE1 8TY is a remarkable, award winning (Green Flag and Silver in London in Bloom) urban garden in the centre of London. It is maintained by St John’s Church and its sister-charity The Bridge At Waterloo. It has exceptional potential as an urban community garden while retaining its reputation for interesting planting. We are seeking a Community Gardener to help us make our vision a reality.

The Bridge at Waterloo (TBAW) is a secular social enterprise founded by St John's Waterloo (SJW) to reduce inequality and unemployment – through creative therapies, employment training and practical emotional support – for marginalised groups in Lambeth and South London.

What are we looking for? For this role, we are seeking someone responsible for:

· Maintaining and creatively developing this beautiful and historic churchyard garden.

· Taking responsibility for agreed operational planning within the garden.

· Establishing and extending volunteer involvement in its upkeep.

· Liaising with other community and voluntary groups within the local area, identifying partnership opportunities where appropriate.

· Ensuring the maintenance of good standards of horticultural practice.

· Promoting sustainability and increasing ecological diversity.

· Ensuring that the garden is tidy and litter free on work days.

· Assisting with the recruitment, co-ordination, support and supervision of our existing garden volunteers, some of whom have special needs.

· Identifying the relevant educational needs of our volunteers and finding accredited training if appropriate.

· Ensuring all relevant health and safety standards are met. Conducting and reviewing risk assessments as required.

· Making the Churchyard an accessible and practical resource for TBAW’s wider work in the community, liaising with TBAW’s Outreach and Engagement Officer and supporting their off-site community gardening work when necessary.

· Being responsible for the proper use, maintenance and safe storage of all plant, machinery, tools and equipment.

· Overseeing and carrying out monitoring and evaluation of work in the churchyard, including outreach engagement, budgets and projects.

· Attending staff meetings for SJW and TBAW as well as project meetings with TBAW team, reporting on all relevant matters.

· Upholding all TBAW’s and SJW’s policies and procedures.

· As required, undertaking some additional duties commensurate with the post, including working flexible hours and occasional weekends if possible.

Hours: 14 hours/2 days per week, with specific days and times to be agreed

Pay: £33,822 per annum pro rata.

Looking after our clients and visitors: TBAW and SJW are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers interacting with these groups to share this commitment. Administrative support: The Community Gardener will have access to the office facilities and equipment as required in order to carry out their responsibilities as outlined (printing, photocopier, stationery etc.). They will also have access to our data and monitoring tools.

What the job involves 

We’re looking for a Black Health Equity Engagement Officer to join us in a newly created role in our Black Health Equity Team alongside a Senior Black Health Equity Engagement Officer. 

The team will support our community engagement function to build trust and engagement with Black community organisations and leaders across the UK. The purpose being to increase the awareness in Black communities of the risk of prostate cancer and to narrow the health inequalities faced by Black men.

As a Black Health Equity Engagement Officer, you’ll be providing the logistical support to Prostate Cancer UK’s Black Men’s Advisory Group - who provide insights, support and guidance to the charity to help us address Black health equity. You’ll attend a wide range of community events and identify ways to spread awareness and build trusting relationships with groups, organisations and networks. 

By building an understanding of the ways which health inequalities impact Black men affected by prostate cancer (and their families) you’ll establish effective and efficient working practices and gather data capturing the impact of this work. 

You’ll get to meet a wide range of supporters and work with Black communities to ensure their lived experiences shape our work and help to increase our number of Black volunteers to increase awareness. You’ll also get to work with different teams across the charity and act as a source of knowledge for our work in tackling health inequalities.

What we want from you

We’re looking for a candidate who understand health inequalities and is able to explain how they may impact Black men affected by prostate cancer. Knowledge of, or previous involvement in health awareness initiatives would be beneficial for this role, although we also value transferable skills gained from other sectors. 

You’ll have experience in organising meetings or events that cater to a diverse range of participants, ensuring that various perspectives are heard and valued, especially within Black communities.

You’ll have a proven ability to build and maintain trusting relationships with a wide array of stakeholders. Furthermore, you’ll be a great communicator, especially when engaging with community stakeholders. 

Please note that community events often take place on evenings or weekends – the successful candidate will need to work flexibly to attend roughly one weekend event a month and take time back mid-week.

Overview

The Choir with No Name runs choirs and builds joyful singing communities with homeless and marginalised people, around the UK. Currently, there are six choirs: in Birmingham, Liverpool, London, Coventry, Brighton (run in partnership with BHT Sussex) and Cardiff (run in partnership with The Wallich). We were founded on the premise that singing makes you feel good; it distracts you from all the nonsense in life and helps you to build confidence, skills and genuine, long-lasting friendships. Our choir members are people who have experienced homelessness, or who are simply going through a tough time in their lives.

We have recently received funding from the National Lottery to build our participation programme to support choir members and people from the wider community work together to create safe, accessible and inclusive choir communities, as well as contribute to the national direction of the Choir with No Name. We are looking for someone to take on this exciting new role to lead the development of our participation programme at a national level as our Community Participation Manager. This role will work with our six current choirs and build a foundation for all future choirs.

As an organisation, we are committed to moving towards greater co-creation of choirs with people with experience of homelessness. This role is a crucial part of this journey.

This role could be for you if you come from a background of volunteer management, client involvement, participation, or co-production.

Participation framework

• Carry out a skills audit across all our choirs to understand what skills are needed to run each choir with greater involvement from choir members, facilitated by choir managers. This will include discovering what skills choirs have amongst their existing member and volunteer communities, and what support and training could be shared.
• Research other organisations’ participation frameworks and volunteer programmes to identify ways in which the Choir with No Name can learn from others in the sector.
• Identify a range of tasks, roles, and responsibilities (being clear about the distinction between the these) that members and people in the community can take part in to support the running of the choir, along with the training they would need to do so.
• Identify healthy ways to step down from roles and responsibilities.
• Design and pilot a framework of roles, responsibilities and tasks, and associated training and support, before rolling out nationally across all our choirs.

Existing volunteer programme

• Evaluate our existing volunteering programme, listening to our volunteer team about their experience as a volunteer, identifying areas for development.
• Develop the existing volunteer programme to support and value volunteers and to incorporate our new approach to co-creation and co-production.
• Work with our existing volunteers in a transition from the current programme into the participation framework, whilst continuing communicating the value and importance of volunteers within the Choir with No Name.

Manage volunteer communications

• Develop and manage accessible communications to ensure volunteers are equipped with the tools they need to do their roles (training, policies, support) and feel valued (thanks and recognition for their hard work). This could include:
  • A regular email to volunteers
  •  An online portal for volunteers to access whenever they need
  • Regular meetings for volunteers to keep them up to date with what is going on in the organisation and to share practice

Volunteer recruitment, induction, training and data

• Lead on national volunteer recruitment and support local recruitment carried out by Choir Managers.
• Develop, with choir members and volunteers, a training programme to support roles within choir. This training should come in a range of forms, and where possible, led or informed by choir members.
• Manage volunteer data, including developing our data management system (currently Monday, but we are considering using Plinth), ensuring:
  • Inductions are completed consistently and reviewed for long term volunteers.
  • Training is implemented and kept up to date.
  • Volunteer data is managed in a central database so we can effectively communicate, track and understand our impact.
  • Reporting on volunteer numbers and other information is provided to the Senior Management Team and board.

Other

• Support the development of the Board Experience Programme and the Member Advisory Panel, led by the CEO and Head of Programmes.
• Work towards the Investing in Volunteers or Kings Award for Voluntary Service.
• Carry out any other duties as may be reasonably required by the Choir with No Name within the scope of the role.

About the role 
As Crisis’ Senior Media Officer, you will play a key role in delivering stand-out media campaigns that inspire the public and politicians to join our fight to end homelessness by raising awareness of our influencing campaigns and fundraising events. You will help to build Crisis’ profile by bringing to life our work, demonstrating how we end people’s homelessness for good through education, training and support with housing, employment, and health.

Your role will be creative and varied. You’ll work with our frontline staff to identify people facing homelessness who want to share their story and empower them to do so. You’ll help create hard-hitting news stories that engage our audiences and raise awareness of some of Crisis’ biggest organisational campaigns including our annual Christmas appeal. You will also help make the most of reactive opportunities that come through to our press office and help build relationships with key journalists.

About you 
To be successful in this role you will have: 

• Experience of working within a busy press office environment/ PR agency or as a journalist   

• Proven experience of leading on high-profile audience focused media strategies or pitching stories which secure coverage across news, consumer, online and regional media. 

• Proven experience of managing and maintaining good relationships with internal and external stakeholders including journalists at all levels.   

• Excellent writing skills with the ability to draft copy for a range of audiences, including political, consumer, tabloid, trade and everything in between. 

• Excellent news sense, with a strong working knowledge of the UK media and ability to develop relationships with key media contacts.   

• Experience of working with case studies, identifying, and preparing them for speaking to the media and empowering people to share their experiences.

Beyond this, you’ll be helping to establish Crisis’ relationship with a newly elected Parliament and Government

About the role 

As Senior Campaigns and Public Affairs officer, you will be responsible for the shaping Crisis’ political influencing strategies for our national campaigns.

Through our research of what works both in the UK and internationally, and our work supporting thousands of people who are homeless or at risk each year, Crisis has developed the solutions needed from Westminster Government to reverse the rising levels of homelessness and we campaign to secure the policy changes needed. With the right political will and leadership, homelessness can be ended.

This role will oversee design and delivery of creative public affairs tactics that will inspire politicians to support our campaigns. This includes overseeing our work to provide the secretariat for the APPG for Ending Homelessness, managing our monitoring and stakeholder relationships and proactively identifying local and regional influencing opportunities.

The role sits within the Campaigns Team in the Policy and Social Change directorate, but you’ll collaborate with a wide range of teams across the organisation to identify influencing opportunities, ensure our campaigns and public affairs activity have maximum reach and ensure people with lived experience are at the heart of our political influencing activity.

About you 

You will have significant experience of working with politicians in Parliament or Government and will have experience of designing and delivering political influencing strategies to secure policy change.  To be successful in this role you will have solid understanding of Parliamentary process and have worked on a range of tactics to raise the profile of issues in Parliament, with excellent political judgement and intuition.

Effective communication and ability to manage a range of internal and external stakeholders will be vital in this role in order to work collaboratively to further our campaigning objectives. You will have good ability to understand policy solutions and how best to communicate them to a range of audiences. Line management experience is desirable, but more crucially you will have experience of motivating teams or individuals to deliver results.

Understanding or knowledge of homelessness or housing policy is desirable. You may have experience in; public affairs, policy, communications and public relations.

This includes supporting the successful delivery of a Sport England funded project to embed system level change in Tower Hamlets and North East Lincolnshire to reduce barriers to physical activity for people severely affected by mental illness.  

I liaise with internal and external stakeholders to support the smooth running and delivery of project activity. I also support the wider team on physical health and activity related projects.

About the role
