Community Leader Jobs in Birmingham, West Midlands
If you want to make a real difference to the experiences of women and birthing people in maternity care, by increasing understanding of the law amongst healthcare professionals and those who manage and regulate maternity care, please read on and download our recruitment pack.
About Birthrights:
Birthrights was founded in 2013 with the understanding that at the heart of the poor experiences and outcomes of maternity care for so many people in the UK, is a consistent failure to listen to the voices of women and birthing people and a complete disregard for their fundamental human rights. We champion the rights of women and birthing people through information and advice, training, campaigns, research and legal action. You can read our new ten-year strategic framework here Strategy - Birthrights
About the role:
This is a maternity cover opportunity for a valued role in our Senior Leadership Team. This position is critical to our work in training healthcare professionals to understand how the law applies to practice. You will be delivering our ambitious plans to take our training service to the next level at this critical time, with support of our two brilliant training co-ordinators and a wider team of associate trainers. You will balance overseeing some exciting new projects whilst ensuring quality delivery of our training to meet our income targets.
About You:
We are looking for someone who has the ability to manage an income-generating service, meet the strategic goals of the service, and identify advocacy opportunities towards our ambition for long term and systemic change.
You will be a collaborative and empathetic leader, with experience managing an operational service or team and generating income or managing budgets. You will have experience developing or delivering training and have some understanding of human rights law or the challenges faced by too many women and birthing people in maternity care in the UK.
We still want to hear from you even if you don’t meet all our criteria. Please tell us about experiences that have not been included here, but that you feel might be relevant to this role

Inclusion Barnet is Barnet’s Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisation (DDPO), led by a board and senior management team of disabled people, and we’re passionate about using our lived experience of disability to work towards inclusive communities and greater social justice for all. This role works on issues across all Barnet’s diverse communities, and all work needs to be undertaken through an equality and access lens. Therefore, we’re looking for someone with their own lived experience of disability (which could include mental health issues or a long-term condition), a commitment to the social model of disability, and an ambition to contribute to a fairer society for all. We also particularly welcome applications from global majority candidates, who are currently underrepresented at leadership level in our organisation.
The successful candidate will be our strategic lead within our award-winning Barnet Together partnership, working as an equal partner with Young Barnet Foundation and Groundwork London. You’ll be overseeing our community organisation support, ensuring that the team meet their KPIs and that we also deliver on our work to challenge inequalities for marginalized groups. You’ll represent the voluntary sector at the most senior level in Borough meetings, and support the development of the VCSE Alliance for North Central London.
You’ll also oversee our libraries, strategizing and identifying opportunities to enhance the service, and act as contact point in our role as Locally Trusted Organisation for the Grange Big Local.
To succeed, you will need extensive experience of the voluntary sector, partnership management, and the gravitas to represent the sector to senior local leaders. You’ll be a natural problem solver and an advocate for equality, as well as a collaborative, coaching manager; a great relationship builder with tact and emotional intelligence, and a champion for the contribution of the sector to the borough, and society more widely. In return, you will become part of a friendly and supportive team, working within a focused but flexible culture, where diversity is valued and you can bring your whole self to work.
This is a UK based role, and whilst most of it can be done from home, candidates need to have, or be willing to relocate to, a base within about two hours travel time from Barnet. We anticipate a need to be in Barnet on a weekly basis on average, for which travel will be paid. We encourage flexible working to suit your work/life balance preferences where possible. We also operate a Time Off In Lieu (TOIL) system.
To apply, please submit your CV with a brief covering letter explaining why you want to work for Inclusion Barnet, and how you would use your lived and professional experience to deliver the role.
Please explain your suitability for the role, and how you would use your own personal lived experience of disability to deliver inclusive and accessible community services for the local voluntary sector and residents.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.

About the team
Our Birmingham hub specialises in providing housing advice and homelessness work, with a particular focus on families and people experiencing multiple disadvantage. We work in partnership with a range of organisations to improve the underlying systems that prevent people from living securely in suitable, safe, affordable accommodation.
About the role
The role of Team Leader is essential to the day-to-day management of the Hub and, in particular, the delivery of front-line services, contracts and projects. We’ll rely on you to lead and supervise the staff and volunteer team that delivers specialist advocacy, empowerment, advice, and systems change within their local community. Supporting the Hub’s strategic lead and management team to deliver our strategy locally will be important too, as will planning and supervising casework, monitoring the effectiveness of our services and helping to promote them. Put simply, you’ll do all you can to ensure we provide an excellent quality service that meets the needs of those who need our help and that everyone has access to a safe and affordable home.
We are happy to talk about flexible working, personal growth, and to promote a workplace where you can be yourself and achieve success based only on your merit.
About you
To succeed, you’ll need experience of working with people facing exclusion and disadvantage and in a multi-disciplinary context with partners, community groups and other agencies. A good understanding of housing law is essential, while experience of debt advice, support services and delivery of advice in a community setting would be useful. The communication skills it takes to line manage others and promote effective working relationships, with external agencies, people with lived experience and internally across Shelter, are key. Last but not least, you must be proficient in the use of a range of IT tools to carry out your work, including case management systems, Microsoft applications, internet and email.
Benefits
We offer a wide range of benefits, including 30 days of annual leave (pro rata), enhanced family friendly policies, pension and interest free travel loans. Our employees also have access to a tenancy deposit loan, payroll giving, cycle to work scheme and an employee assistance programme.
Home is everything. We exist to defend the right to a safe home. Join us in ending the devastating impact the housing emergency has on people and our communities.
Safeguarding is everyone's business. Shelter is committed to protecting the health, wellbeing and human rights of those we support, and enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect. All our staff will be expected to observe professional standards of behaviour and conduct their work in line with our Safeguarding Policies.
