What you will be doing as a Nomad Community Mapping Volunteer
The aim of our service Nomad Community Mapping Volunteers is to provide mapping data and locations of services and groups to our network. This is achieved by scouting areas and sourcing possible venue hires and points of interest that would benefit our services and people within our community.
As a Nomad Community Mapping Volunteer, you will enable our Group Development team (and wider service network) to make informed decisions about opportunities in Derbyshire's communities and spaces. As part of the team you will support:
- Collecting grassroots data and information as a volunteer map maker, strengthening relationships and networks within the community
- Mapping areas, points of interest, complimentary activities, community assets, sources of alternative support, venue location
- Liaising with Group Development Workers, providing updates
- Organise and file information updates into our systems
- Record new information according to needs of the service, updating the DRPSS community map
- Attending and liaise with groups to update group information, recording updates on the DRPSS information systems.

What is a Community Volunteer?
Community Volunteers provide practical help to serving people and their families. Whilst a friendly chat is an important aspect of the role you will also be providing some hands-on support like a lift to a medical appointment or help with shopping.
Why do we need you?
We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community for more than 130 years. Armed Forces life can bring its challenges when a loved-one is deployed overseas, or a family must move to a new location. Some people find themselves facing illness, bereavement or unexpected financial problems. Day-to-day activities can become difficult without a little help. That’s where you come in. Could you spare a few hours a week to lend a helping hand to a family in your serving community?
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
The essential part of the role is visiting beneficiaries, so you will be expected to travel to meet people at home or elsewhere.
Some volunteers will visit more people than others. Whilst you may visit a beneficiary, or family, on a regular basis support is always time-limited.
What would you be doing?
- Contacting beneficiaries and arranging to meet them at their home or in a suitable place depending on their needs
- Providing practical help like lifts to appointments, going to the shops, washing-up, running errands etc.
- Providing time limited, relief care for children (additional training is required for those undertaking this type of support).
- Helping people to think about how to access other support if needed and signposting as required
- Reporting any safeguarding concerns in line with SSAFA’s safeguarding policy and procedures.
- Keeping in touch with your Community Volunteer Coordinator, attending supervision and keeping a record of your visits.
- Keeping up to date with training and SSAFA news so that you are best able to support beneficiaries
- Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA
- Adhering to SSAFA’s policies and procedures at all times, including SSAFA’s: safeguarding; equality, diversity and inclusion; health & safety; data protection; confidentiality

- Understanding of the need to remain within the boundaries of the role with regards to friendship, finances etc.
- Practice confidentiality and data protection in line with SSAFA’s policies
- Good IT skills e.g. ability to use Outlook – you will receive your own SSAFA email address.
- Ability to travel to meet beneficiaries
- A willingness to adhere to all relevant organisational policies and procedures.
Depending on the needs of the team, this role would suit someone who would like to volunteer a few hours each week.

Volunteer library assistants will be supported by experienced library staff and your duties will involve:
Greeting customers and talking to them about what the library and community hub has to offer.
Assisting with any enquiries both face-face and over the telephone, providing information and sign-posting them to the relevant services if required. A library manager is available at all times for advice/support.
General Library duties, such as:
- Registering new members to the library and explaining to them how to use our self-service machine to borrow & return books.

- Keeping our notice boards tidy and up to date by removing any out-of-date leaflets or information.

About you/Skills required:
This is a customer-facing role, you will be the first point of contact for customers, so a good level of English, effective verbal communication skills and confidence when speaking to people is essential for this position. Customer service experience would be an advantage although not essential.
- Be friendly, well mannered, approachable and helpful to anyone using the library/Community hub.
- Enjoy being around & helping people of all age groups.
- Good organisational skills. Confident with problem solving and using your initiative.
- Good literacy & numeracy skills – an understanding of how to organise things in alphabetical or numerical order.
- Good I.T skills are required for this role; you will be registering members using our Library management software and handling PC requests using our computer booking system and assisting with any IT enquiries.

- Enjoy working in a team and are willing to support other activities that may be going on in the hub led by Manchester Libraries or The Place at Platt Lane during your shift.
- The role will involve carrying and moving library stock. You will need to be physically able to move library resources.
- We ask that you commit to a minimum of 3 months to the volunteering role.
- You must be over 18, due to staff limitations unfortunately we cannot take on young people.

Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust (ACT) is the only fundraising charity dedicated to supporting the Addenbrooke's and Rosie hospitals to do more.
Thousands of people come through the doors of Addenbrooke's every day. We need your help to raise awareness of how people can support cancer services across Addenbrooke's.
As an ACT Information Hub Volunteer, you will be the face of ACT. You'll be based on our Hospital Hub in the Outpatients department, talking to people about our charity, and raising awareness of the different ways that they can get involved.
You will be friendly, enjoy talking to a wide range of people and passionate about supporting Addenbrooke's and the Rosie hospitals.
You will be joining a growing, friendly volunteer team and the time you give will make a real difference to people's lives.
Training for the role will be provided as well as ongoing support. We are looking for volunteers to give their time on a weekday with an aim of volunteering for a minimum of 6 months.
We will cover travel expenses and provide a reference after two months in the team.
