We are seeking a Trustee Treasurer to help to manage our finances and investments, as well as being involved in strategic decision-making and grant giving.
The Lipman Miliband Trust is a charity whose purpose is to support socialist research and education as well as “educational activities that raise public awareness and understanding of struggles and movements for peace, human rights and a more equal, diverse co-operative and democratic society.”
The Trust was established by socialist businessman Michael Lipman in 1974 and academic Ralph Miliband until his death in 1994. We are celebrating fifty years of the Trust’s existence this year – and looking forward to the next 50!

You will work with our Trust Coordinator as well as external advisors and accountants in helping to manage our finances and investments, and be a member of our Governance and Finance Working Group. This is a voluntary, unpaid post, but we are happy to pay for appropriate additional training and there will be a lot of support from the Trust Coordinator and other trustees.
Being a Trustee is a significant commitment and responsibility, but it is also hugely rewarding. The role will require you to attend each of our four Trustee meetings a year, and to participate in regular online meetings of the Finance & Governance Working Group. You will be part of strategic decision-making about the Trust, contribute towards the Trust’s governance and take part in decisions about grant awards.
We are based in different locations around the country and most of our work is conducted online, however we aim to meet in-person as a Board at least twice a year.

For everyone, for ever starts with every one of us.
At the National Trust, our motto is ‘For everyone, for ever.’ These aren’t just words on a page. They are the guiding principle that underlies what we do and how we do it. We know that making that promise a reality depends on building teams that reflect the diversity of the communities we serve and creating an inclusive culture that enables every single person in every single team to thrive.
We’re working hard to ensure that everyone feels like they belong. We’re actively listening to those within and beyond our organisation and continually evolving so that everyone who works or volunteers here feels respected, championed and empowered to do their best. It’s an ongoing journey and we want you to be a part of it.
We’re looking for inspiring people to help protect nature, beauty and history for the next generation. The National Trust Council is a great opportunity to bring your views and ideas about how we are run and to ensure we deliver everything we need to. Our Council members make important appointments, help inform strategy and keep us connected to our members, local communities and the wider public. Their energy, enthusiasm and experience are invaluable to us. These volunteers make a real difference. And so could you.
About the Council
The Council plays an important role in how the National Trust is governed. Its main responsibilities are:
- to appoint Trustees;
- to monitor and support their work; and
- to ensure our strategy is consistent with our charitable purpose and that it is being delivered by the Board of Trustees.
Council members are ambassadors for our work and inspire support for the Trust among members and the wider public.
The Council’s strength comes from the breadth of knowledge and experiences of the people on it. It has 36 members – an equal balance of elected and appointed people. The elected members are directly chosen by members of the National Trust. The appointed members come from organisations (chosen by our members every six years) which have a connection to the Trust’s work.
Wherever you are in your career path or whatever you do, your input could help us look after inspiring places for future generations. Now’s your chance to make a real difference.

There are three Council meetings a year, including one which is held as part of a three-day visit hosted by one of our regions or countries. Meetings are likely to be a mix of in person and virtual. The time commitment is spread across these activities and includes time for reading and any other preparation. There is also the opportunity to get more involved if you wish with additional briefings, informal property visits or by supporting the work of the Council’s committees.
Council meetings are usually held during the working day, allowing time for travel where appropriate. The 2025 schedule is as follows:
- Early February 2025
- Three days in mid-June 2025 (regional visit)
- Early October 2025
Council members may serve a maximum of three three-year terms, subject to re-election or re-appointment. Some of our Council members go on to become Trustees.
Council membership is a voluntary role, therefore, as with all our volunteer roles, travel expenses are reimbursed, as are additional expenses incurred such as accommodation.
About you
We encourage applications from all backgrounds. Your unique ideas, experiences, and outlook will contribute to our diverse Council. Showcase your qualities and experiences—most importantly, demonstrate your passion for our work.

This Community Center was founded in 1994 and began as a soup kitchen until it expanded into a kindergarten with the help of the mothers from the area. The soup kitchen cooks for the kindergarten and the people from the town. Thus, this organization is based on working with families and children, supporting them in their growing and development process, with a team of professionals and social workers.
Tasks
The kitchen prepares breakfast and lunch for the kids in the kindergarten and it also prepares food for the community members. The volunteer will be able to help in many tasks such as assist the women in the kitchen by washing and cutting vegetables, preparing the dessert for the children and help in the cleaning process after everything is served.
How does your work impact on the community?
Your help is invaluable for the workers and for the community members because this center is an integral part of their everyday life. Furthermore, the ladies and workers would not be able to participate in this cultural exchange if there aren’t any volunteers willing to help. The women also love helping the volunteers learn a bit of Spanish because they are like family to them. Here, the volunteer can learn so much about the Argentinian culture and see how many traditional dishes are prepared. It’s a place where you can completely feel the support of a community and you never leave the kitchen without a smile on your face.
Fee includes (600 USD):
- Pre departure information.
- In country coordination.
- Tutoring, constant communication and guidance with your coordinator and Exchange Volunteer Meetings.
- Volunteer Certificate and Performance Evaluation

Description of the project
Milpa Community aims to be an open place to exchange ideas, to learn, inspire, and to build the community leadership we need for tomorrow’s world. Its mission is to empower young people from the surrounding area with the skills to be able to have a job, gain confidence and grow surrounded by a communitarian way of living.
We believe that by creating more community experiences, we empower people, youth especially, so they can build their own future and have a better life. In that way, we work toward local development and try to reach sustainability in its three dimensions: environmental, social and economic.
Highlights:
- Empower yourself and others working inside a community-based NGO in Buenos Aires.
- Learn and practice about agroecology. Enjoy working on gardening, landscaping, community development, international development & NGO management
What can you learn as a volunteer?
Volunteers will be able to learn about many topics and maximize what they learn before by helping us to maintain the garden and grounds. Volunteers with previous specific knowledge can prepare workshops or develop specific tasks. Volunteers will enhance their knowledge in practice, helping in the tasks of daily maintenance of the garden, in the organization of community space with the armed schedule, lists of participants’ management and administration tasks of space.
Why is this program important for the community?
The members of the community we work with are families that work hard every day to better their financial situation.
Many of the young people from the surrounding neighborhoods have not been able to finish their basic studies and therefore can only dream of going to university. The Pacheco Community Center gives them the opportunity to learn a practical trade, work in a team and be prepare for labor market integration.
We focus on training. We help young people build new capacities. Not only can they learn about gardening, landscaping and begin an immersion in agroecology philosophy, but also the Pacheco Community Center has a greenhouse for the students to plant fruits and vegetables, which they will be able to sell and generate their own income.
Role of the Volunteer
The volunteers that come from different parts of the world to exchange knowledge and experience and to work alongside the community members create a mutual spirit of solidarity.
- Learn by helping in practical classes with youth to maintain the garden and grounds.
- Help watering during 20 minutes in the mornings outside the greenhouse if the weather is too dry.
- Help teachers to prepare didactic material for theoretical classes (like diagrams, pictures, boards)
- Help social coordinators to manage the organization of community space with the armed schedule, lists of participants’ management and administration tasks of space.
- Help preparing and attending breakfast or afternoon snack (according daily schedule) for youth.
- Help preparing special monthly workshops: Open day to the community when families and friends share and afternoon with talks, games and relaxing time.

This project is an affordable school for the children of the town whose parents belong to the working class. Children have access to languague education.
Volunteer's Tasks
The volunteers use their knowledge of English to help the students in group classes. The presence of native speakers evidently is very helpful to the children’s learning of the language.
Your role in the school will be proportionate to your level of Spanish and the amount of time you can volunteer for. Consequently, this program is ideal for undergraduate students of modern languages on a year abroad, particularly those interested in teaching. If your Spanish and/or time is limited, you will be able to assist classes.
Why is this project important for the community?
Although there are no professional teachers, the volunteer teachers provide a rich and cultured education. Other English schools are between three to five times more expensive than this one, therefore, parents living in nearby neighborhoods are not able to send all of their children to study English. This is why the school is important for the community; it allows all the children to have the same opportunities and access to education, and it is also a way to fight for social justice. There is a lack of infrastructure, such as running water and paved roads in this particular neighbourhood and it is also known to be “left aside” because the state does not intervene. However, the school helps the families and also the young people of the town, because it also provides a first-job opportunity to students that are more advanced. This allows students to have a disposable income with which they can travel; an almost foreign opportunity to most.
Local Coordination
Silvia, the owner and director of the school, is also the coordinator for Voluntario Global there. She has made this a place of recreation, where the children come in the late afternoon, after going to school, to study English while taking a cup of tea in a relaxed and family atmosphere.
What can you learn as a volunteer?
Learning is a two-way street because the volunteer also learns through this experience. Their official duties are to assist the teenaged teachers, help them with pronunciation or grammatical rules, correct homework, read and explain to the children the basic elements of the language. Moreover, they can also help the oldest students get ready for international exams. This work allows the volunteer to exchange with people from different cultures, mainly thanks to the mix between communities from various countries of Latin America. Furthermore, teaching is the perfect exercise to learn how to speak to an audience and to get its attention. The volunteer learns to communicate with the youngest children who don't speak English correctly, and is able to learn how to adapt quickly and use other means of communication. Above all, the volunteer is able to create relationships with their students that will go beyond the classroom.
How does your work impact on the community?
Not only does this school offer the families a chance to further their education, it also provides a center for community. It is a place of exchange and hope, based on the idea that the children are able to study and to have a good future, because their parents were not awarded with the same opportunities even if the schools and the best universities are free. Students are able to connect more intimately with the volunteers and share their cultural differences, their accents, theirs travels and more. The volunteers also symbolize hope for the students that admire them because they are role models. They make the students believe in a brighter future and instil in them the motivation and aspiration to achieve their goals, no matter how big and regardless of their current socioeconomic status.
Schedule
The school is open from March to mid-December and works Monday through Friday, 4.30 to 7.30pm. It welcomes between 80 and 90 students of all levels and ages, for two-hour lessons. They also teach on Saturday morning to adult students, but the volunteer will be able to choose if to attend on the weekends or not.
Fee includes (600 USD):
- Pre departure information.
- In country coordination.
- Tutoring, constant communication and guidance with your coordinator and Exchange Volunteer Meetings.
- Volunteer Certificate and Performance Evaluation

Why is this project important for the community?
This project is important because the institute is located in a working-class neighbourhood where learning English can be useful since the majority of the locals would never have the opportunity to speak English or meeting native speakers in their area. The hardest thing is being able to keep up with modern and technological demands and also keeping the students interest in learning the language and getting to know different cultures.
Volunteer's Tasks
Volunteers are expected to assist teachers in class. The presence of native speakers evidently is very helpful to the children’s learning of the language, but anyone with knowledge of English and enthusiasm to get to know another part of Buenos Aires is welcome. When they reach the last level, namely 6th year, they are expected to have reached an upper-intermediate or advanced level of the language and to sit an international exam called Cambridge First Certificate.
Local Coordination
This English Institute opened in 2000 offering courses of English for children and teenagers in particular, and eventually for adults. It is located in Ciudadela, a small middle class town just outside the city of Buenos Aires. You can take either the bus or train to get there, which will take approximately 1 hour. On your first day, you will have an informal chat with the director, Laura, where she will explain how the school runs and tell you in which classes you can help.
What can you learn as a volunteer?
You will have the chance to know another part of Buenos Aires, commuted with the locals, and amplify your perspective immersing on the day to day of a working class neighbourhood.
