Job description

Bishopsgate Institute is looking to appoint a Chair of Trustees, either from internal or external applicants. This position is not remunerated.

Our Chief Executive has established a powerful vision for the continuing development of the Institute into a revitalised cultural space for learning and performance within the heart of the City of London.

We are looking for a Chair of Trustees to support the delivery of the business plan (to 2024/25). During their term, they will work with the Board and the CEO to ensure the necessary resources and infrastructure are in place for the next phase of the Institute’s plan.

We seek someone whose passion, professional expertise, extensive networks and commitment to the mission of the Institute will support us in advocating for our work.

Chair of Trustees

We are a charity (The Bishopsgate Foundation) with specialist archive collections, running courses for adults, talks and debates, lectures, dance, concerts and other performances. Applicants will have experiences and skills in a number of areas, ranging across arts and cultural partnerships and collaborations, venue management, adult learning, strategic financial and commercial management, marketing and digital audience data management, connecting with audiences in the digital space, endowment property management, HR and fundraising.

We are particularly keen to hear from people who are interested in working in new and innovative ways.

The Chair has responsibility for the governance of Bishopsgate Institute, enabling the Board to develop its capacity and capability for good governance, ensuring a focus on its charitable purposes and enhancing the Institute’s Endowment to achieve these purposes in the present and the future. The Chair, along with the Chairs of the Finance & General Purposes and Programme Committee, liaises informally with the Chief Executive on behalf the Board.

The Chair of the Trustees must have substantial experience as a charity trustee. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in a leadership role for a publicly accountable institution, an ability to think strategically and well-honed communication skills that enable them to act as an ambassador for the Institute. An understanding of and enthusiasm for cultural provision of the kind provided by Bishopsgate Institute is desirable, as is financial literacy.

We expect our new Chair to allocate time to support to the Chief Executive, maintain contact and work closely and collaboratively with fellow trustees, as well as with other individuals within and beyond the Institute. Ideally, the Chair of Trustees would attend all committee meetings, in addition to chairing the full Board meetings.

Our trustees, including the Chair, serve an initial term of 3 years and a maximum term of 5 years. The position of trustee is not remunerated.
