About the course:
Given the insecure and often rapidly changing environments in which aid agencies work, safety and security management is not an optional extra.
This five-day intensive course will enable participants to identify the key requirements for managing security in complex emergencies and conflict zones by practicing essential techniques in risk management, security assessment and crisis response.The course draws on field case studies, the current humanitarian environment and the security management practices used by humanitarian bodies internationally.
The content of the course is aligned to the National Occupational Standards (UK) in Security Management as well as the InterAction Minimum Operating Security Standards and builds on the ECHO Security Training Modules.

Who should attend?
This course is aimed at security managers, field programme managers, or HQ staff with responsibility for security or risk management. It is also appropriate for staff with a strategic /organisation responsibility for security or those preparing for deployment to insecure areas.
Course structure:
Registration is from 8.45 am in the first day. Training each day will run from 9 am and conclude at 5.45 pm.
From the second day, each training day begins with a review of the topics covered the previous day to ensure that the concepts, tools, and frameworks are fully understood. Each day ends with a period of reflection, evaluation, and questions.
Day 1
After you have registered on the morning of the first day, the course begins with a discussion of the operating landscape and an introduction to the Security Management Framework. Later in the day, you will learn about Environmental Scanning and Security Risk Management.
Day 2
In the morning, you will learn about security strategies. Before lunch, the course will move in to staff management and security mainstreaming. The afternoon will be taken up with an assessed session on incident management.
Day 3
Day three begins with an examination of security planning and implementing security plans before considering security in relation to other stakeholders. After lunch follows a section on site security and hostile observation awareness. The day ends with a session on information security.
Day 4
The majority of the fourth day will be filled by an assessed crisis management exercise, group presentations and de-brief. At the end of the day, the course will cover the topic of crisis management and operational continuity.
Day 5
An external facilitator will discuss stress management with you in the morning. Legal liability will then be discussed in the afternoon, followed by action planning. The last session is reserved for wrapping up the course: recapping the key points, answering any lingering questions, completing course evaluations, and receiving your certificates of completion.
The credit-rated assessment:
The Certificate in Security Management is a competency based, assessed course worth 10 Masters level credits that can be transferred to the Masters in Development and Emergency Practice (DEP) from Oxford Brookes University or other similar postgraduate qualifications.
