Overview

The course will look at basic domestic violence theory and specifically how children under ten years old are affected. Focus will be given to behavioural, emotional and cognitive effects on children under ten years old, as well as the links between domestic violence and child abuse and the impact on parenting for both the abusive and the non-abusive parent. There will also be a focus on the effects of abuse on unborn children and their brain development and the impact of post traumatic stress on children. Practical guidance for practitioners will be given.

What you require

Who should attend?

Anyone who works directly with children under ten years old for whom domestic violence is an issue. This course is aimed at practitioners with no previous training on domestic violence. For example, this may include Sure Start staff, Victim Support staff, teachers, students with placements in early years settings, health visitors and social workers.

Format

This course is delivered online and involves self-guided learning and an interactive webinar. A week before the session, you will receive the materials for you to work through in your own time and should take no longer than an hour to complete. The training session is tutor led and will last for three hours, including a 20 minute break. In our virtual classroom, you will explore some of the topics from the self-guided learning in more depth and cover new topics. The training session will involve tutor presentation, question and answer opportunities and group work activities.
