Inclusive Student Engagement

Volunteer Management, Operations

Start date

16/05/2018

End date

16/05/2018

Overview

This half day training session focuses on inclusive student engagement, specifically looking at how to effectively engage students from under-represented groups in your activities. Using live case studies from the group, we will share the knowledge we have built up over the past 11 years, supporting attendees to audit their own initiatives and introduce changes to reduce barriers to engagement.

This session is for anyone looking to engage students who are typically under-represented in student activies - particularly students from BAME or low income backgrounds, and disabled students. Our knowledge is built up from supporting students to take part in social action, but it is relevant to anyone who works in a student engagement capacity - in student services, students' unions or elsewhere.

Overview

1. Introduction to diversity and inclusion- a brief introduction to diversity and inclusion and its importance in effective social action and volunteering.

2. Auditing your programmes - taking a step back and analysing the accessibility of your own programmes.

3. Touch points and barriers- Using one of your programmes an example we'll do some hands on work looking at:
a. Reviewing messaging and outreach
b. Reducing barriers to application
c. Reducing barriers to participation

4. Wrap up and Evaluation: How will you implement these interventions, and how will you know if they have been successful?

About Student Hubs

Student Hubs is a national charity, working in partnership with UK universities to support students to take part in quality social action in their local communities. Every year we support over 2,000 students to take part in, create, shape and lead our programmes. We have extensive experience of delivering training to thousands of students and staff members since we were founded in 2007.

Student Hubs is committed to making our events and activities inclusive. We can make reasonable adjustments on a case-by-case basis e.g. providing wheelchair friendly spaces, large copy handouts, regular breaks.
If you have particular accessibility needs, including special educational needs and would like to discuss them before booking onto the event please do get in touch with [email protected] and let us know how we can make the activity more accessible.
