Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation – PHAST Training

Overview

World Health Organization data shows that 1.7 million deaths a year are attributable to unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene. 54.2 million disability adjusted life years (DALY) are caused by unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene – each DALY represents the loss of one year of equivalent full health. Interventions to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene practices have been shown to reduce sickness from diarrhea by between one-quarter and one-third.

Communities can examine existing hygiene behaviors, practices, traditions and understand how transmission of disease takes place and how it can be prevented at a household level. Girls who are unable to access clean safe water, separate toilets and hand washing facilities at school are much more likely to drop out.

Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation (PHAST) training supports water, hygiene and sanitation projects by increasing hygiene awareness within communities.

The course equips community workers working with vulnerable communities – where there is low water and sanitation coverage, with technical skills that is appropriate in WASH programming.

Cost

The individual cost for the training workshop is USD 720 for individual participants and USD 680 for groups above 10 participants exclusive of 16% VAT. This covers the training fee, resource materials, and conference package. Participants will be responsible for their own travel expenses and arrangements, such as airport transfers (and visa application, where necessary), food and accommodation, health/accident insurance, and other personal expenses.

The target groups are humanitarian and development management practitioners, non-governmental workers and government staff.

Aim

This course aims to increase WASH practitioners’ knowledge in water, sanitation and hygiene and how to improve community hygiene behaviors, prevent diarrheal diseases and encourage community management of water and sanitation facilities.

Objectives

At the end of this training you will be able to:

• Demonstrate the relationship between water and health;
• Understand the broader area of hygiene promotion and sanitation program;
• Increase self-esteem of community members
• Empower community to plan environmental improvements and to own and operate water and sanitation project facilities

Post training Mentorship
