Overview

This is an intensive, dynamic hostile environment awareness training (HEAT) course where you will discuss, learn and apply approaches and measures to improve your personal security when living and working in insecure environments. Personal Security for Humanitarians has been designed specifically from an NGO perspective to provide the most relevant and challenging training for NGO workers.

Essential theory learned in the classroom will immediately be put into practice in real-life simulation exercises, confronting key issues such as roadblocks, abduction, weapons, mines and crossfire. The course is designed to put you under stressful circumstances, preparing you for the worst case-scenario.

The course will introduce a variety of measures to help you reduce the likelihood of security-related incidents taking place and enable you to respond appropriately to situations that could compromise your safety and that of your colleagues.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of understanding your role and the security environment

  • Undertake a context analysis and a personal risk assessment

  • Demonstrate immediate responses to hostile environments

  • Effectively contribute to a security planning process

  • Describe measures to reduce personal and team vulnerability to a range of threats

  • Explain the importance of cultural awareness and sensitivity, team working, interpersonal communications and how diversity impacts on security

  • Demonstrate immediate responses to threats in the operating environment

Course Overview:

This three and a half day course is fully residential with a compulsory online component. Participants are required to arrange their own timely travel to and from the training venue, and manage to complete the online components prior to the face to face sessions. Details of how to get to this training venue shall be provided in the course joining instructions upon booking and participants are expected to arrive at the training venue on the Monday night before training commences. Accommodation and meals will be fully provided throughout the course.

Registration on Day 1 will take place from 18.00hrs on the Monday evening, followed by a few evening sessions. Participants are welcome to have dinner, from 17.00hrs - 18.30hrs before registration.

Training on day 2 will start at 8.30 hrs and finish at 19.30 hrs (with lunch, coffee/tea and dinner breaks incorporated throughout the day)

On day 3, training begins at 8:30 and ends at 17:15 with an optional social event in the evening.

On the final day (day 4), training will finish by 16.00 hrs, and all participants are expected to be present for the end of the course.

Online Learning

The course begins with online materials and tasks that introduce various concepts and issues to participants which are mainstreamed into the face to face course. These modules include Gender and Security, Understanding Where You are working (with a focus on urban contexts), Assessing and Reducing Risk, and Terrorism.

Day 1

Registration is followed by an introduction to the course, and introductions to the RedR team and each other, there is also a Health and Safety Breifing followed by set-up for Day 2.

Day 2

The course begins with an introduction to personal safety and security in the field and gaining an understanding to where you are working. The course will move on to assessing and reducing risk. After lunch, you will learn about security strategies and security management framework. The last session of the day will cover radio communications and emergency communication and incident reporting. The day will conclude with a video and discussion.

Day 3

On the third day of the course, practical exercises will take place and training will end at 18.00 hrs, with a social event to follow.

Day 4

On the final day, training will finish by 16.00 hrs, concluded by a recapping of the key points, answering any lingering questions, completing course evaluations, and receiving certificates of completion.

Who should attend?

Personal security training is crucial for anyone working in an insecure or hostile environment.  The course is designed primarily for humanitarian personnel, but it is also applicable to anyone who is likely to be deployed to an environment that is, or has the possibility to be insecure.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

The minimum age for this event is 18.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The Fire Service College is a short taxi ride away from Moreton-in-Marsh station, or a 30-minute walk.

From London Heathrow airport – take the national rail Heathrow Express to London Paddington. Then there is a direct national rail train to Moreton-in-Marsh.

From Gatwick airport – take a National Rail train to Moreton-in Marsh via Reading. Alternatively take the Gatwick Express to London Victoria, the Victoria line northbound to Oxford Circus, then change to the Bakerloo line northbound to London Paddington – then a national rail train direct to Moreton-in-Marsh.

What's the refund policy?

-For bookings cancelled two or more weeks before a course, administrative charges will apply. Applicants will be entitled to a refund of 85% of the course fees paid, or if places are available will be offered a transfer of 90% of the course fees paid onto the next instance of the course. 
-For bookings cancelled one to ten working days* before a course begins, 25% of the course fee will be refunded (*during normal UK working days, Monday-Friday and working hours 9am-5pm).
-For bookings cancelled less than 24 hours (working days only) before a course, or after a course has started, no refund will provided. 
-If the applicant chooses to transfer to another course and then cancels their booking a second time, neither a further transfer nor a refund will be offered.
-The refund must be claimed within two months from the cancelled course start date.
-Please note that unfortunately we are only able to cover our local bank charges and not the recipient’s bank charges when we make refunds.
-Refunds may take up to 30 days.
