Overview

A new Charity Governance Code was published in July 2017 which is endorsed by the Charity Commission. This practical course will help you to embed the principles set out in the Charity Governance Code in your organisation. It explores effective systems and processes but also the importance of behaviours as a driver of  good governance. The course will look at how to achieve a strategic focus and productive relationships between board members, staff and volunteers.

This course draws on NCVO's cutting edge thinking, developed from our governance work with a range of charities over many years, to help you to create a high performing board.

Outcomes

By the end of the day you will have:

  • considered how achieve the right mix of skills and diversity on your board
  • identified key areas of good practice in board recruitment and review 
  • discussed how to deal with challenging board members and conflict 
  • examined how to engender team working on a board yet maintain individual independence of mind for effective decision making
  • considered how to develop and retain existing board members
  • examined the importance of succession planning
  • considered how to build an effective working relationship between the board and CEO/senior management team.
  • explore approaches to board appraisal and review
  • understood the role of the chair and vice chair in supporting effective governance

Who should attend?

Trustees, chairs, senior staff and those with a role to play in the development of an effective board and good governance such as CEOs. This course has an emphasis on the practical application of the above elements.
