ntroduction
Cities and urban areas in developing countries are growing very fast largely contributed by urbanization and allure of jobs by the youthful populations. Majority of the urban dwellers are poor and are vulnerable to climate-induced disruptions. Cities have a responsibility to tackle risks and build resilience through sustainable and inclusive development to spur commerce, culture, science, and production.
Climate Change effects affect the urban living conditions, infrastructure and interactions in cities over time which compromises social and economic advancement. Adaptation discourses on cities accentuate the use of climate projections to determine future risks and the response strategies needed to build resilience. Whereas climate change mitigation is “generally handled at the national and international level, adaptation is best handled at the local level”.
The course presents the latest knowledge and skills developed by international experts on how to address the implications of climate change for specific urban areas needed by a modern development professional. The course brings out existing policies, practices and plans and gives insights on how to adapt to negative impacts of climate change.
