Overview

This is a 6 day course on 13, 14 Oct (Fri/Sat); 3, 4 Nov (Fri/Sat); 1, 2 Dec (Fri/Sat).

The course will cover the inter-relationship between the rights and needs of young people impacted by torture and are in the UK separated from their families.

Overall Aim

To explore good practice and develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to work ethically and effectively with separated children and young people

Overall learning objectives:

  • Identify ways torture and organised violence, flight, and life in the UK can impact children and young people who are separated from their families or primary carers.
  • Recognise how the legal and human rights context is relevant to our work with separated children and young people
  • Recognise ways in which trauma and separation have impact on attachment and the lives of separated young people who have experienced torture and organised violence
  • Identify the range of risks associated with trauma for separated young people
  • Identify good practice assessing the needs and risks of separated young people
  • Demonstrate therapeutic tools and skills in working with symptoms of trauma
  • Recognise the risk of vicarious traumatisation, especially as it relates to working with SYP and identify skills and approaches to support self and team well-being
