Are you working in a disadvantaged community or exploring a call to long term youth ministry? Let us EQUIP you to reach your community with the hope of Jesus.

‘There are lots of training courses for youth workers in the UK, but I don’t know of any aimed at equipping youth workers to serve young people in disadvantaged communities. There is such a need for the Youth Ministry Training programme.’

- Martin Saunders, Deputy CEO, Youthscape

We know youth ministry is tough, and that youth workers can feel isolated and under-resourced for the job. Our training equips youth workers for ministry in a disadvantaged context. We have a track record of training hundreds of leaders for mission and will connect you with a community of youth workers for support. Choose a training option that suits you.

EQUIP is a 10 month full-time training experience for youth workers. You will receive comprehensive training one day a week alongside a practical youth work placement in the community. Join a Thrive Team for the year or work with a placement church in another disadvantaged community near Oxford.

If EQUIP isn’t quite right for you, you may be interested in our advanced youth work course, DEVELOP, or our day events. Get in touch to hear more about options and start dates.

What you will learn

Youth Ministry Training: EQUIP focuses on being led by God through his Word, leading yourself in new practices, and belonging to a community committed to supporting each other in spiritual growth. These are the essentials for long term youth ministry.

  • Going straight to the source
The Bible inspires and informs our practice and is the bedrock of the whole training course. You will become skilled at unpacking what the Bible says and how God’s mission shapes your work on the ground.
  • Learning and using new skills
You will study key areas in youth work, reflecting on them in context and applying them in your placement. This includes: understanding the culture that shapes young people; building relationships and growing community; learning how to develop faith in young people in and outside of the church; and project management skills to juggle all those balls in the air!
  • Looking after yourself
It’s easy to forget about self-care. This year will help you establish lifelong habits that will keep you going and thriving for years to come. You will identify your personal strengths and make a plan to support your unique needs. Spiritual practices in community will keep you freshly plugged into God, rested, and fuelled for successful ministry.

‘I’ve grown most from working with experienced youth workers and seeing their different styles. Practising skills in training before using them with young people is also really helpful because it’s a safe place to make mistakes in a no pressure environment.’
    - Sam, Youth Work Trainee

What else will I do?

The best learning takes place when it is active, individually applied, and within a supportive community journeying together in growth.

  1. Active Training Sessions
Once a week you will meet with other participants for interactive learning and to reflect on your youth work practice.
  2. Hands-on Experience
You’ll spend 20 hours per week on a Thrive Team or with a placement church, because the best learning takes place when you apply it on the ground.
  3. One-to-one Coaching
Regular sessions with an experienced youth worker will help you overcome personal obstacles to growth and impact.
