Making The Leap is a small and innovative social justice charity that aims to make a big difference. From direct delivery, to advocacy and leadership, we refuse to stay in our lane and believe passionately that those we exist to serve have the right to be anything they want to be. The shared soul of the organisation is to be passionate about helping young people from less-advantaged backgrounds; build up other charities and community groups and want to partner with them or support them; want to work with businesses and organisations to get things done; and care deeply about addressing racial inequity generally (and anti-Blackness in particular). The people here work hard, are good at what they do, and for so many it is ‘home’, with an average tenure of 11 years.
The organisation has a number of strands: core Making The Leap; the UK Social Mobility Awards; the Social Mobility Podcast and our brand new initiative Black Charity Leaders. Your remit would be directly with the first three strands and those in your team will offer support to the fourth.

Organization Overview
Rights and Security International (RSI), formerly Rights Watch (UK), promotes just and effective security. For over three decades, initially in Northern Ireland and now globally, RSI has successfully advocated for a rights-based approach to national security and held Governments to account for unlawful actions taken in the name of security. Our vision is of a world that recognises that our individual freedoms are essential to our collective security.
RSI is one of, if not the only, human rights organization that is exclusively working on national security issues. We mobilise our knowledge and expertise, in partnership with civil society globally, to address cutting-edge contemporary issues – including the weaponization of counter terrorism measures to close democratic and civil space, the use of emergency and securitized measures in response to the global health pandemic and other non-terrorism related threats, the impact of national security measures on children and vulnerable adults, including those held in IS-associated detention camps in Northeast Syria, the unlawful use of lethal force in the context of counterterrorism, and the proliferation of non-criminal counter terrorism measures.
RSI carries out its work through innovative and high-quality research, strategic litigation, collective action with trusted partners, and advocacy at the domestic, regional and international levels. Through its work, RSI has become a critical reference point and central hub of expertise and action on issues of national security and human rights. Our work has brought about important systemic reforms and justice for individuals, and consistently informs the work of the UN, governments and other influential stakeholders.
We have received wide acclaim for our work including receiving the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Human Rights Prize for ‘outstanding civil society action in the defence of human rights in Europe’, the Irish World Damien Gaffney Award, and the Beacon Prize for Human Rights and were shortlisted for the Columbia University Global Freedom of Expression Award for Best Legal Services 2018.
The work of RSI is becoming increasing relevant given the stark rise globally in national security measures that silence dissidents, disproportionately impact and/or target vulnerable and marginalised communities, or otherwise close civic and democratic space. In parallel, the obstacles for victims to access justice have significantly increased as governments hide behind the well-worn cloak of national security and at the same time are systematically dismantling vital legal protections and other safeguards.
As the Legal and Advocacy Director, you will help lead the organization and make an impact worldwide as we increase our work with international partners and implement our exciting and innovative new strategies.
This position reports to the Executive Director. It may entail personnel management responsibilities.
Person Specification:
- RSI is looking for a passionate and experienced human rights professional who:
- Has a post-graduate qualification in law, preferably including coursework in several areas of international law.
- Has a minimum of 5-7 years of experience in human rights, preferably including at least some experience with issues of national security.
- Has experience managing individuals or small teams.
- Is highly self-motivated, creative, open-minded, and a strategic thinker.
- Has a proven track record of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Has advanced skills in strategic litigation, legislative advocacy, UN advocacy, or grassroots activism, including the development of detailed strategic plans.
- Has experience building coalitions, ideally internationally.
- Has a demonstrable record of completing successful, complex projects in a timely manner.
- Has a strong commitment to working in a collegial and respectful manner with colleagues as well as a broader range of partners and stakeholders.
- Ideally, has expertise in gender rights.
- We are especially – but not exclusively – interested in receiving applications from candidates with expertise in the law or political context of Northern Ireland, and with an ability to conduct research and advocacy related to that context.
- You must speak and write English fluently, and fluency in other languages is a plus.
- You must have a right to work in the United Kingdom.
Responsibilities:
- Work with the Executive Director to create and implement strategic plans for specific projects as well as the organization as a whole.
- Draft and review expert legal materials on matters of international law such as international and regional human rights law, international humanitarian law, and international refugee and asylum law.
- Draft and review expert legal materials on issues of UK law.
- Develop and implement law reform and litigation strategies.
- Create and lead efforts to inform and shape public opinion, such as by drafting opinion pieces and calls to action.
- Build and strengthen an international coalition of civil society organizations and academic experts addressing national security issues from a human rights perspective.
- Build effective and lasting relationships with other key stakeholders.
- Potentially, manage a small team of law and policy specialists.
- Be a strategic leader and thinker in the field of national security and human rights.

Director of All Souls Serve the City
All Souls Church, Langham Place
Many years ago, John Stott paved the way for the All Souls Serve The City initiative. He saw the need for the church to get out there and work amongst the people that needed help. He saw that London is home to two parallel universes – those that have a lot and those that have little. He believed that the church’s role was not only to preach Jesus but to serve like Jesus. That is what All Souls have been aiming to continue to this day through the work of the ministries of All Souls Serve The City (ASSTC).
Following the creation of a new CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) on 1st January 2021 to bring together this collection of ministries an exciting opportunity has arisen to lead this umbrella organisation. We are therefore looking to appoint a dynamic individual to the role of Director, who can sustain, develop and grow these ministries, under a unified model.
The role comprises three principal responsibilities: leadership, management, communication & advocacy.
Leadership
-
Execute the vision for ASSTC by setting direction (together with the ASSTC board of trustees) and overseeing the implementation of the strategy
-
Ensure gospel foundation and ethos of all ministries
-
Represent ASSTC within the broader church context, leading in decision making
Management
-
Bring team together and create a flourishing environment
-
Line manage and develop ASSTC project managers / ministry leads
-
Oversee fundraising and financial position
-
Oversee recruitment of all paid team members
Communication & Advocacy
-
Provide oversight and communication link to all grant-making bodies, ministry advisory groups, trustees, and to the church family
-
Ensure alignment of individual ministry objectives with charity and church priorities
-
Steward resources across all ministries
There is an occupational requirement that the job-holder is a Christian under the Part 1 of Schedule 9 to the Equality Act 2010.
