Job description

Peace Direct is an international charity with a big mission: to work with local people to stop violence and build sustainable peace in some of the world's most conflict affected countries. More than that, we want to change the international system so that it better supports the role that local people and communities play in preventing violence and building and sustaining peace.

As UK Policy and Advocacy Manager, you will be a core member of the Programmes and Research team, with overall responsibility for our policy and advocacy work aimed at the UK Government and the wider INGO sector in the UK. As a UK based INGO we feel that we have a responsibility to ensure that our own government acts in ways that supports and strengthens the prospects for sustainable peace around the world and in particular does so in ways that are inclusive and transformational for those peacebuilders working on the frontlines of conflict. Therefore we are looking for someone with the drive, determination, strategic vision and experience to ensure that Peace Direct's key messages make their way into policy and practice among UK stakeholders.

The successful candidate will be an experienced manager, with at least 3 years of policy or advocacy experience, both in terms of developing and implementing a policy and advocacy strategy. We are looking for someone with a genuine passion for supporting local efforts to build peace, who is willing to challenge the current aid system and its reliance on externally-led and directed interventions. We have no overseas offices, employ no expatriate staff overseas and do not intend to do so. The successful candidate will see this as our strength and will be willing to argue the case for greater support to local actors when talking to government, donors and other stakeholders, as well as engaging them in difficult but necessary conversations about the need to 'Decolonise' thinking and practice as it relates to peacebuilding.

While the post is based in our London office, we have closed our office due to Covid and do not expect to reopen it until June 2021. Therefore the successful candidate will be expected to work from home until June at the earliest. Please note that this is a fixed term contract, for 24 months, though we hope to secure additional funding beyond that period.

Peace Direct strives to be a diverse and inclusive employer, with equality of opportunities regardless of personal identity, and we are committed to improving our systems and ways of working to support this, including creating a Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DEI) working group, DEI strategy and recruitment guidelines. We strongly encourage individuals from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds to apply, including Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME), LGBTQ+, people with disabilities and people with mental health challenges.

The deadline for applications is Friday 4th June. Only completed applications will be accepted and only applicants with the right to work in the UK will be considered (we do not yet hold a Home Office visa sponsor license and so cannot accept applications from people who don't already have the right to work in the UK). The application form and Job Description are available on Peace Direct’s website.

Peace Direct works hard to ensure its staff have a good work life balance and feel valued. Some of the benefits we have include:

  • 25 days annual leave not including the office closing between Christmas and New Year.
  • Stakeholder Pension with Peace Direct contributing 6%
  • An interest free season ticket loan for the purchase of a commuter season ticket
  • Flexible working hours
  • Enhanced maternity and adoption leave pay (12 weeks full pay, 12 weeks half pay)
  • Training budget available for all staff (we have secured ‘Investors in People’ accreditation and are committed to the development and support of all staff).
  • A warm and friendly work environment!
