Job description

Executive Director

c.£60,000 pa + benefits

Location: London EC2, though consideration could be given for some remote working

The International Lawyers Project (ILP) was founded in 2005. We facilitate the provision of pro bono legal expertise from our volunteers to government agencies, to civil society groups, to communities, and others, principally, but not exclusively, in Africa. Our key thematic focuses are to combat bribery and corruption, support tax reform, and curb illicit financial flows – areas in which our staff and volunteers have deep technical knowledge and experience – to promote economic justice.

We are client-led and respond to requests from local actors to build their capacity, whether through formal training sessions, workshops, representation, or advice, or through extended engagement and mentoring for communities, officials, and civil society representatives. To provide this assistance we draw on a bank of highly qualified lawyers from the UK and other countries who offer their services for free. As a charity, our ultimate aim is to help our clients to create long-lasting change in some of the world's poorest regions. 

The role of Executive Director is a key appointment within ILP. Reporting to the Board of Trustees, you will undertake full direction of this small but highly effective organisation. This involves managing a small team of staff and interns and a wider network of volunteers, maintaining our reputation as a provider of high-quality pro-bono legal advice, developing the strategic vision and new areas of work, consolidating and strengthening ILP’s institutional basis through effective fundraising, as well as nurturing partnerships with all our stakeholders.

We are seeking a person with experience of innovative applications of the law to achieve policy reform in a sustainable development context; deep expertise in one of our programmatic areas; as well as proven experience in fundraising, budgeting, and programme management. 

Key responsibilities:

Strategic Planning and Leadership

  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for ILP’s work, building on its existing focus areas and developing new themes, in collaboration with the Board of Trustees and programme staff
  • Lead on the formulation of new initiatives in line with that vision, as approved by the Trustees
  • Manage fundraising efforts and take responsibility for all stages of the fundraising, building relationships with foundations, private law firms, and individual donors
  • Identify new opportunities for ILP to develop its portfolio, expand our bank of volunteers and the clients that we have assisted
  • Build on our reputation for providing high quality legal support, including by ensuring that goals are met and that quality of delivery is maintained
  • Represent ILP in a variety of fora, ensuring our work is communicated to key stakeholders.

Programme Management

  • Deliver high quality programmatic work for at least one of ILP’s thematic priorities
  • Oversee/manage/support ILP programmes and staff, ensuring appropriate monitoring and evaluation
  • Build relationships with existing and new clients and volunteers
  • Oversee the implementation of policies and guidelines for operations
  • Oversee all employment obligations including payroll, pensions, employment entitlements
  • Oversee the ILP budget and budget process.

Whilst this role is advertised as a full-time, permanent position, there could be flexibility for a 4 day week, rather than 5 and this will be discussed at interview stage.
