What are we looking for?
We are looking for an experienced individual to lead on the optimisation of a new website to integrate with our digital marketing channels. You will be able to effectively manage and implement the website content strategy in line with brand and marketing objectives to successfully drive business and engage key audiences.
The successful candidate will have the ability to monitor and manage the digital customer journey using dynamic UX driven content, providing insight into cross-functional plans to develop website requirements. You will create strategies to grow subscriber and web traffic metrics. You will also create frameworks and policies to support effective delivery of website content and be responsible for ensuring compliance with website and GDPR regulations.
You will have the ability to work closely with different directorates to manage technical issues whilst working inter-departmentally to implement a digital strategy putting customer UX at the heart of strategic planning. You will also be able to build commercially sustainable relationships with valued suppliers to support delivery of marketing objectives. The post holder will be passionate, organised, detail-oriented, and able to inspire and engage others.

About us
We're Imperial Health Charity, an organisation that helps our hospitals do more through grants, arts, volunteering and fundraising. We support the five hospitals of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust: Charing Cross, Hammersmith, Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea, St Mary’s and the Western Eye.
During the height of the covid-19 pandemic surge during 2020 we channelled the huge outpouring of kindness from the public into vital wellbeing support for NHS staff and a better hospital experience for thousands of patients. Volunteers played a pivotal role in supporting our efforts during this time, for which we were awarded a Mayor of London Volunteering Award in the Crisis Response category.
About our volunteering programme
We’ve just completed our 2017-2020 volunteering strategy and we’re proud of what we’ve achieved over the last three years:
- engaged nearly 1000 volunteers
- appointed over 700 new volunteers
- achieved the Investing In Volunteers standard in volunteering management
- ran a successful youth volunteering programme for 16 to 25-year-olds, with 169 volunteers taking part
- during our most recent annual volunteering survey, 95% of volunteers agreed that their expectations of volunteering with us had been met.
Our approach is one of partnership, working with our hospitals, bringing our knowledge and expertise on engaging volunteers successfully, together with the hospital’s needs and expertise in managing health and care safely.
During 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic we successfully managed an emergency response at our hospitals, engaging over 330 Crisis Response Volunteers (most of whom we recruited during the pandemic). Since the start of 2021 we have been working with our NHS partners to deploy our Reserve Crisis Response Volunteers as well as restart recruitment efforts so that we can support our hospitals as they roll out the vaccine, continue to treat increasing numbers of patients affected by the virus and help keep the health service running, in spite of the current pressures.
The Volunteering Manager role
As the Volunteering Manager, you will oversee the day-to-day running of the volunteering programme at St Mary’s and the Western Eye hospitals.
Building strong relationships across the Trust, you will empower volunteers to provide a high-quality experience for patients and staff and, in doing so, have an outstanding and highly-rewarding volunteering experience.
Day to day you will find yourself doing the following:
- Recruiting, training and supporting volunteers
- Identifying new areas for engaging volunteers
- Helping to project manage the design and introduction of new volunteer roles
- Supporting hospital staff who are working with, managing and/or supporting volunteers
- Developing training and guidance resources
- Providing support and line management to the Volunteering Support Officer
What we are looking for
You will be someone who thrives in a fast-paced and people-focused environment, with experience of working with and managing volunteers and volunteering programmes/roles. You will have strong experience of working methodically and within project management principles, with a keen eye for accuracy and attention to detail. You will enjoy juggling multiple projects, priorities and stakeholder expectations in order to deliver a high-quality service. You will have strong IT and systems skills with experience using digital CRM, project management and/or training systems. You will enjoy and be confident in creating and delivering training and presentations to different audiences. You are someone who plans and reflects, but who also is ready to get stuck in and help fix a problem if it arises, including resolving concerns or disputes between people.

Music in Detention brings music-making to migrants in the UK’s immigration detention system. We bring skilled artists together with detainees to create and share music, supporting them to rediscover and restate their sense of self, and to enhance their wellbeing and agency within what can often seem like a hopeless environment. We also work with communities surrounding detention centres to collaboratively create music between detainees and residents, facilitating dialogue and helping to change pervasive attitudes towards migrants in the UK.
Communications and marketing have increased steadily in importance for our work in recent years, and are central to the delivery of our strategic aims. In the last few years we have developed the strategic frame for our communications work and our capacity to deliver on that strategy, which has three main aims:
- Growing MID’s brand and reach

What we want from you
You have solid experience of Scrum and Kanban across a number of different projects, products, campaigns or companies and now you want to put that experience to good use at an organisation fighting a disease that kills 11,000 men every year.
You’ll be joining a team focused on transformation aimed at making us fit for the digital age and capable of adapting to a worldwide pandemic. You’ll need to be able to deliver noticeable improvements quickly to prove the credibility of your change programme and have the tenacity to see things through when faced with obstacles. This role works with all levels across the organisation and that will be only possible if you are an excellent communicator capable of both sharing big visions and giving detailed instructions.
You have a practical understanding of Agile with a pragmatic approach to implementing it across a range of projects. You’re comfortable talking about and demonstrating Agile methods and will have some experience of Agile transformations in previous roles – helping people learn and develop their skills. You might have aspirations to be an Agile Coach in the future.
You’re passionate about the positive effect Agile can have and are keen to help people realise that in a practical way. You are comfortable giving talks and training to large groups and building up one-to-one working relationships across a diverse skillset.

Overall Purpose
The Communications and Digital Manager will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of Gingerbread’s public facing communication materials, both online and offline, helping to increase our reach and our reputation and bringing our vital work to life.
This includes:
- Responsibility for the ongoing development of Gingerbread’s digital assets, especially Gingerbread’s website and overseeing our social media activity
- Supporting the Head of Communications & Digital, to deliver Gingerbread’s communications strategy
- Supporting the Head of Communications and Digital to embed good digital practice across the organisation
- Planning and ensuring execution of communications across Gingerbread’s various channels, taking a user-centred approach
- Managing the development and delivery of communications and marketing products and monitoring impact
- Acting as a brand champion across the organisation
- Managing the Information Officer and Digital Officer to meet objectives and funder targets
The Communications and Digital Manager will work towards Gingerbread’s vision of a society in which single parent families are valued and where they and their children are treated equally and fairly, and our mission of achieving change through elevating the voices and needs of single parents, and providing support services.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
Website
- To plan the ongoing and future development of the Gingerbread website through both technical and strategic improvements, working closely with the Head of Communications & Digital and other colleagues
- Managing the relationship with Gingerbread’s website agency, maintaining a prioritised workflow of development plans and ensuring that work is completed and tested on time and within the support contract budget
- Leading on a content strategy for the website, and supporting direct reports and wider colleagues to plan and update content, including taking editorial responsibility for all content produced
- Taking a data-led approach to continuous improvement of the site, including interpreting analytics and other digital data to make recommendations for improvement
- To involve single parents in developing and evaluating our online performance and information, including by supporting colleagues to take a user-led approach to development
- To provide internal expertise on SEO and Google AdWords and support colleagues and direct reports to increase our reach
Developing and managing Gingerbread’s digital assets and services
- To maintain Gingerbread’s internal communications tools
- To provide technical oversight of peer-to-peer services, e.g. our online forum
- To support direct reports to research, plan and create effective information and multi-media products that meet user and funder requirements
- To work with colleagues to maximise output from other digital resources, including supporting developments in our effective use of mailing programmes and CRM
- Support the delivery of digital service design through user research and testing
- Oversee Gingerbread’s social media channels and identify areas for improvement
Communications, marketing and dissemination
- Lead and develop concepts for creative, exciting marketing campaigns and communications plans that will increase awareness of Gingerbread among single parents, practitioners and other audiences and enhance Gingerbread’s campaigns, fundraising and operational activity
- Lead on copywriting, design, editing and commissioning of content for corporate, policy, fundraising, information and marketing materials including key publications such as the Annual Review
- Act as a brand champion for Gingerbread across the organisation, supporting with the induction of new staff and ensuring all our communications comply with the brand guidelines as well as developing the brand guidelines as the organisation evolves
Planning and reporting
- Oversee the use of an organisational editorial calendar, enabling the planning and development of segmented communications by channel and audience and the delivery of a coherent programme of content that responds to external hooks
- Planning the delivery of information content and other communications deliverables against funder and user requirements to meet grant and contract targets
- Reporting on performance of communications, digital and information assets regularly as required by funders and colleagues
Managing staff and volunteers
- To recruit, motivate, and manage the performance and workload of the team and volunteers as required
- To work actively to support the development of direct reports, providing support and opportunities from training, coaching, and by delegating effectively.

Person Specification
Essential
- Experience of strategically developing a website, including leading on technical and non-technical improvements
- Experience of WordPress or other comparable website CMS.
- Experience of managing agencies and partners to deliver on time and within budget
- A strong understanding of the theory and practice of SEO and online advertising tools including Google AdWords
- Experience of assessing data and user testing insights to identify areas and act on areas for improvement
- An understanding of digital best practice including accessibility and usability
- A firm grasp of existing and emerging digital technologies (from databases and e-fundraising tools to forums), and a genuine interest in staying up to date with trends and requirements
- Communications and copy-writing / editing expertise, with the ability to tailor writing to different audiences and mediums, and summarise complex information in lively, compelling text
- Experience of developing social media strategies to support and maximise the impact of marketing and campaigning activities and to raise awareness and increase reach
- Understanding of the principles of branding, and experience of enforcing brand guidelines
- An ability to strategically plan content and communications to maximise reach and impact, meet audience needs and ensure effective use of owned channels
