The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre is an international human rights organisation working to ensure that respect for human rights is at the core of companies’ business models; support communities and workers to secure their rights; advance accountability for corporate human rights abuse; and advocate to governments to create strong, enforceable regulation to facilitate these outcomes. Our Global Team of more than 70 people is based in over 15 countries around the world who work with a rich network of activists, unions, and human rights groups, with our website and publications available in eight languages. We work across all sectors and issues related to business and human rights, with a particular focus on the rights of workers in global supply chains, the rights of communities seeking responsible natural resource use and a just transition, and the rights of people to accountable digital technologies.

The Resource Centre has offices in London, New York City, Berlin, and Bogotá -. Our team members are also based in Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, China, Colombia, France, Germany, - Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Philippines, Senegal, South Africa, Switzerland, Tunisia, UK, Ukraine, and the US. The Resource Centre is a non-profit organisation and does not accept funding from companies.

Job Purpose:

The Research Assistant will support the Natural Resources programme in implementing the Resource Centre’s program of work related to natural resources and human rights, with an emphasis on transition mineral mining. The successful candidate will develop research, analysis, and briefings for the Transition Minerals Tracker (TMT) that guides investors, companies, and civil society to understand human rights risks across the renewable energy value chain.

Applicants must have:

  • Good understanding of how to research and present complex information in a succinct and balanced way, with a strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong interest in advancing human rights in relation to natural resources projects.
  • Ability to work independently, with limited supervision and under tight deadlines.
  • Fluent English-language skills (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Good writing skills.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel and Word skills.
  • 1+ years’ work in the field of social responsibility, human rights, natural resources (particularly on global companies’ human rights impacts)

Highly desirable:

  • Proven experience in advancing human rights in relation to natural resources projects.
  • Research experience in corporate disclosure on human rights and/or supply chain policies and practices, using public documents such as annual reports, sustainability reports etc.
  • Good understanding of the intersection of gender and natural resources, and/or attacks on human rights and environmental land defenders (including regarding land conflicts and/or land rights).
  • Data visualisation skills.
  • Additional language skills (Spanish, French) are a plus.

Roles & responsibilities

  • Lead on research, data collection, and analysis for updates to the TMT, including assisting on research into supply chains, and developing a briefing on growth areas of transition mining.
  • Work with the Programme Manager and Researcher, and Regional Researchers, on communication and dissemination of research and reports, and lead on building communications materials for the TMT and other natural resource products.
  • Help organize and participate in webinars and other outreach related to the TMT and other natural resource related reports. Identifying and taking part in opportunities to promote our resources for impact
  • Website responsibilities including natural resource inputs, big issue and company dashboard updates and maintenance, and undertaking company responses.
  • Other admin tasks as required.

Essential functions of the position include consistently operating a laptop, remaining in a stationary or standing position while doing so, and participating in several hours of video calls per day. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation, no domestic or international travel is expected.

Person specification

Values: Strong demonstrated commitment to human rights and interest in advancing human rights in corporate supply chains. Shares values and ethos of the Resource Centre.

Research & analytical skills: Able to search and identify relevant information online; persistent in seeking out difficult-to-find information (e.g., through desk-based research and phone calls); creative in identifying new sources of information. Experienced creating and managing Excel spreadsheets.

Languages: Fluent English-language skills (reading, writing, speaking); Spanish or French skills are a plus

Communication & Representation: Good writing skills, and strong understanding of how to present complex information in a succinct and balanced way.

Experience: 1+ years’ work in the field of social responsibility and/or human rights in relation to natural resources projects. Experience in researching corporate supply chains and human rights disclosure preferable. Strong Microsoft Excel and Word skills required, data visualisation skills preferable.

Self-initiative and organization: Able to use own initiative and work independently within agreed framework. Strong time management and prioritization skills, and able to work under pressure and tight deadlines.

Teamwork: Able to operate effectively and constructively with colleagues based around the world and willing to adapt work hours to liaise with team members based in other regions.
