Job description
Executive Director
Bromley by Bow Centre
Salary: £70,000, plus benefits
Location: East London, E3 3BT

The Bromley by Bow Centre is a pioneering and vibrant community charity in East London which is renowned for its radical approach to health and wellbeing. It was founded 36 years ago and sits in a beautiful three-acre community park. At its heart is a partnership between a diverse community, a locally-rooted charitable organisation, a research team and one of the most progressive primary care health teams in the UK.
The charity supports families, young people and adults of all ages to learn new skills, improve their health and wellbeing, find employment and develop the confidence needed to achieve positive outcomes they may not have dreamt of. We work with the most vulnerable people in our community, those who are isolated, facing physical or mental ill health or who are lacking confidence, skills or qualifications.
The Centre delivers a diverse range of projects based on a unique model that combines social entrepreneurship, the arts, learning, social support, horticulture and holistic and integrated health programmes. We work alongside people to support transformative change in their lives and their neighbourhoods and we provide a wide variety of integrated services. The Executive Director is a newly created position leading a broad range of inter-connected service functions, including programmes, projects, research and knowledge share, fundraising and partnerships. The role has 9 direct reports and a wider team of 85. It combines significant service delivery responsibilities across all of the organisation’s programmes, allied with overall day-to-day operational leadership. The role requires an ability to engage with multiple stakeholders and partners and requires an exceptional relationship-builder and communicator, who can drive efficient and effective systems, and continue to build the charity’s strong creative and innovative programmes. The Executive Director reports to the charity’s Chief Executive, is a member of the Executive Leadership Group and Chairs the Management Group.

The key to the Executive Director role is the combining of a mission-driven energy, with strong abilities that ensure effective delivery across the full range of service areas. This requires extensive and developed leadership and organisational management skills; an eye for detail and a natural focus on quality. It needs a supportive and sensitive approach to getting the best out of the team; and the ability to design and implement tools that measure effectiveness and create growth. The role is about driving efficient and effective systems; but it also requires a constant eye to building on the charity’s strong creative and innovative energy.
