Job description

FIGO’s Projects Department is currently expanding. We are looking to recruit an Advocacy and Communications Specialist to join our Safe Abortion Advocacy Team.

The most recent addition to the department is the Advocating for Safe Abortion (ASA) Project with a newly hired team of 8 HQ staff who will be responsible for the implementation of a three year, multi-country capacity building project. The goal of the project is for FIGO to strengthen the capacity of ten of its Member Societies to become key actors in safe abortion advocacy and national leaders in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights for women.

The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO’s) vision is that women of the world achieve the highest possible standards of physical, mental, reproductive and sexual health and wellbeing throughout their lives. The organisation leads on global programme activities, with a particular focus on sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and South East Asia.

FIGO advocates on a global stage, especially in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) pertaining to reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health and non-communicable diseases (SDG3). We also work to raise the status of women and enable their active participation to achieve their reproductive and sexual rights, including addressing FGM and gender based violence (SDG5).

The ASA team sits within the projects department and is responsible for the implementation of a three year, multi-country capacity building project. The goal of the project is for FIGO to strengthen the capacity of ten of its Member Associations (MAs) to become key actors in safe abortion advocacy and national leaders in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights for women.

The successful candidate will have the following skills and experience:

General and professional education

Essential

Relevant postgraduate degree (development studies, social sciences, public health) or relevant work experience

Knowledge and experience

Essential

  • Good, relevant communication and advocacy experience preferably on large multi-country projects in low-resource countries in Africa and/or Latin America and preferably on a women’s sexual and reproductive health agenda
  • Good understanding of women’s rights issues in developing countries
  • Demonstrable experience of implementing a successful, culturally appropriate, messaging campaign, including leveraging authentic voices and collating data and evidence to successfully advocate 
  • Proven experience in collaborative capacity building across sub-Saharan Africa / Latin America, including experience of designing and implementing in-person workshops and webinar-based trainings to promote organisational learning and knowledge sharing
  • Understanding of how to use case studies, data, campaigning, communications and alliance-building to influence
  • Experience of developing messaging, position statements and understanding of media, policy and NGO coordination mechanisms
  • Experience in implementation of detailed work plan
  • Demonstrable experience of successful advocacy work with stakeholders at national and global levels
  • Experience of developing advocacy partnerships and working in networks or coalitions
  • Experience of working both independently and as part of a team, exercising autonomy and personal authority as needed

Desirable

  • Hands on experience in drafting an integrated advocacy and communications strategy
  • Experience working on abortion or SRHR related campaigns
  • Knowledge and experience of delivering programmes aligned to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including set targets

Skills, abilities and attributes

Essential

  • Fluency in written and spoken English, excellent writing and communication skills
  • Proactive attitude and ability to identify new, more effective and innovative ways of doing things
  • Strong social media and IT skills including confident use of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
  • Proactive planning and forward thinking
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Proven ability to work with a diverse and cross-cultural range of stakeholders
  • Flexible and creative problem solver

Desirable

  • Fluency in French and/or Spanish would be a distinct advantage
  • Experience in Adobe Creative Cloud (including video) and / or other design programs

Any other requirements applicable

Essential

  • Willing to travel internationally up to four to eight times a year for periods of five to ten days at a time
