Job description

Contract: Permanent

Salary: £50,031 - £54,111

Location: Camden Town, north London (though we are open to applications for some remote working)

Hours: 0.4FTE / 2 days per week

Deadline: 9am Thursday 3rd September

Possible is committed to providing equal opportunities for all applicants regardless of their background. We value diversity whilst also acknowledging that people from certain backgrounds are underrepresented in our organisation. We are keen to correct this, so particularly encourage applications from Black, Asian and minority ethnic people; disabled people ; people from the LGBTQIA+ community; people with a mental health problem and people who identify as working class (or have done in the past). If you’re not sure about applying, please do get in touch with us for a chat – we’d love to talk to you! There's more info on how to contact us under 'how to apply'.

US: Hi, we’re Possible – we bring people together to create bold, beautiful solutions in response to the climate crisis. Whether that’s connecting the world’s first solar railway, mining renewable heat from underneath London’s parks, leading calls for a televised climate debate or launching a ground-breaking employer scheme to incentivise clean holiday travel - we’re always thinking of new ways to cut carbon that involve and benefit the public.

YOU: Are you someone with a passion for ensuring change-making organisations are expertly run, based on a solid financial foundation and in a strong position to increase their impact? Do you enjoy working in a team of hard-working people dedicated to making the world a better place? Do you have the experience to bring valuable perspectives to strategic decision making? If so, we should talk.

Possible is a small, innovative climate charity dedicated to developing, popularising and building public participation in climate solutions. Founded just over a decade ago, then called ‘10:10’, Possible has made its name showing what a positive vision of the future can look like. Since relaunching as Possible in October 2019 we’ve gone from strength to strength - securing the world’s first ever election televised climate debate, being named as one of The Times Christmas appeal charities, and securing multi-year funding to run transformative car-free cities campaigning across the UK and internationally.

With our own resources and energy growing - but with the climate crisis only becoming more urgent - we’re ready to get stuck into the 2020s. We’re looking for an experienced director of finance to ensure our work and impact is underpinned by strong financial management, that our fundraising strategy is fit for purpose, and to contribute to our strategic decision making. Our ideal candidate will be a qualified accountant, have demonstrable experience in senior charity financial management roles, and be passionate about tackling the climate crisis head on.

+ About the role

You'll be a member of our flat senior leadership team. Instead of reporting to a CEO, you'll work with three others (Directors of Campaigns, Communications, and Innovation), peer managing each other and reporting to the board, to lead a growing climate charity approaching 25 staff.

You’ll take the lead on everything financial, responsible for ensuring sound financial management of the organisation, acting as the primary interface between the leadership team and the board of trustees on financial matters. As well as contributing financial expertise and insight to day to day organisational decision making, you’ll be involved alongside the leadership team in strategic planning to ensure the long term viability of our plans and projects.

Key Responsibilities

You’ll lead our annual financial planning and budgeting, with input from co-directors and the wider staff team, and ensure that adequate processes are in place to allocate resources effectively and monitor financial matters at all levels of the organisation. You’ll make sure that adequate financial controls and risk management techniques are in place and functioning well.

You’ll support the head of fundraising in setting annual fundraising objectives, and where appropriate provide advice and guidance to aid in successful delivery of them. You’ll also be responsible for signing off fundraising applications, ensuring they are in line with our needs and based in sound financial forecasting.

You’ll be responsible for ensuring Possible is accountable to relevant financial stakeholders, that obligations are fulfilled and that key relationships are maintained by relevant staff members. You’ll be our point of contact for banks, auditors, HMRC, payroll providers and pension providers.

Operationally, you’ll be responsible for managing our book-keeping (with support from the office administrator), payroll (using an external payroll provider), managing regular reconciliations, producing monthly management accounts as well as financial accounts to meet our statutory responsibilities, maintaining oversight of contracts and partnership agreements - and providing support where needed to all teams within your area of expertise.

What it looks like at Possible:

As with all members of the Possible team you’ll be part of a small, passionate, nimble, unique and positive organisation that cares about its people, its projects and, ultimately, the planet. The other 3 directors, alongside the rest of the Possible team are here to ease you into this position and show you the ropes.

An average week you will be doing the above operational activities, meeting with co-directors, having 1-2-1s with members of the team, and everyone in the office chips in to make the tea, take out the bins and do the washing up, so there’s that too.

+ About Possible

Here at Possible, we have a vision for a low carbon Britain that has been built by and belongs to everybody.

To get there, we dream up projects, build tools and spread success stories to make sure everyone has the help and inspiration they need to play a role in tackling climate change. Our work cuts carbon, but because we work on cultural as well as technical levels, we get people talking about climate change action too. We want our projects to be infectious, so it is always about more than just a solar panel here, or an LED there - it’s about groups of people working together to change the world.

+ Our Values

Inclusivity  Trust and respect   Creativity   Shared ambition

Positivity  Caring and kindness  Integrity  Openness

Away days help to keep these values alive and we work together to keep our team as supported, empowered and cared for as possible. We’re run by a team of directors rather than one single CEO, and we’re committed to reducing hierarchy wherever possible.

  • Flexible working (e.g. hours may be spread over several days subject to agreement with peer manager)
