Pain Concern is a charity providing information and support to people with pain and those who care for them, whether family, friends or healthcare professionals. All pain is unpleasant, but for the 7.8 million people in the UK living with long-term pain it is a part of everyday life. It diminishes quality of life more than any other condition, leading often to loss of work, depression and disability. Anyone at any age can develop persistent pain and you will very probably know somebody affected. Although there is usually no cure, people who receive the appropriate treatment, information and support can manage their condition effectively with life-changing results.
Role Purpose:
Are you seeking experience in publishing? Be a part of the team editing, writing and commissioning content for the magazine, website, leaflets, etc. of Pain Concern. The editorial team undertake all the editorial jobs involved in converting text to publication. Some writing will be involved, but the focus for this role is on ‘editing’ rather than ‘journalism.’ As a member of Pain Concern’s editorial team, you will assist our Managing Editor. By joining us you will join a fast-growing and respected service.

What you would be doing:
You will be part of a team, editing, writing and commissioning content for the magazine, newsletter, website, leaflets, etc. of Pain Concern. The editorial jobs involved in converting text to publication include:
· Copy-editing
· Editing transcripts of interviews to produce copy ready for publication.
· Working with authors
· Working with our advisers
· Proof reading
· Permissions and acknowledgements
· Indexing and working with indexers
· Bibliographical references
· Working with designers
· Corrections and maintaining an archive
· Researching information about pain and related topics
Is this role right for me?
We are looking for:
· Excellent written English
· Ability to learn and adopt editorial policy and procedures
· Interest and curiosity in learning about chronic pain
· A working understanding of IT, Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams
Availability and location:
· Minimum commitment of 3 months

What you’ll be doing
We’re on the lookout for VOLUNTEERS to join our bustling Newsdesk team, and support in the content creation and approval process. Some of the things you’ll be doing week-to-week includes:
• Creating, producing and managing high-quality article content for Travel Radar
• Building relationships with airlines, airports, PR agencies and in-house Reporters
• Supervising the visual layout of content including feature images and image use
• Regularly checking and tracking content for accuracy, Copy-Editing
• Provide mentoring and written feedback to Reporters on their articles via Editorial Comments
• Adhere and ensure adherence to SEO guidelines for content working with the SEO Specialist/s
• Determine and track important team and content KPIs
• Support the management of the Newsdesk Team including rota management, managing Leave of Absence, responding to email and phone enquiries and internal team performance and appraisal management

Our volunteer website editors promote the activities of our local volunteer groups and teams by helping keep their websites relevant, up to date and engaging for members of the public. A positive local profile can help raise funds, promote adopting a cat, promote neutering and make sure as many people as possible learn about great cat welfare.
What can you expect to be doing?
- Sourcing news and information for websites

The opportunity
You will be joining Sustainability First at a critical time, when we are stepping up our ambition to drive change in the energy and water sectors in a way that benefits people and responds to the urgent need to transition to a more sustainable future. You will work collaboratively with our Executive Director in meeting our ambitions to scale our work, drive change across the sector and embed the representation of people into decision-making.
This will include six primary responsibilities:
1 Ensure that Sustainability First has a clear strategic direction aimed at fulfilling its charity objectives and that the Strategy is regularly reviewed.
2 Oversee the governance of the Charity with:
a. an effective, diverse and relevant Board of Trustees.
b. appropriate policies, processes & financial management such that the Charity operates within the law, in pursuit of its Strategy and demonstrating good practice.
c. regular and effective liaison, reporting and oversight of the Executive Director, Company Secretary and, as necessary, staff and panel of experts in order to ensure effective and proportionate planning, use of resources, monitoring and reporting by the Board of Trustees.
3 Set the agenda for and chair Board meetings to ensure engagement of, and discussion amongst Trustees based on the best possible information, input from the Executive Director and team, leading to clear and accountable decision-making.
4 Appoint, support and manage the Executive Director on behalf of the Board.
5 Ensure that the charity has an income generation strategy which is monitored and actively supported by trustees and Chair, in order to achieve the Board’s stated objective to build resilience and capacity for Sustainability First to successfully fulfil its charitable objects.
6 Represent the charity externally as required.
Skills
After many years of service to our charity, our current Chair is retiring. At a time of opportunity and challenge for our organisation, we’re looking for someone with a proven track record of leadership at board level, ideally in the UK charity sector. Your experience of running and growing a small but impactful organisation in a professional or voluntary capacity will be crucial to the work of our Board, dedicated staff and expert associates.
Not one to shy away from a challenge, you will draw on your experience of collegiate collaboration, positive decision-making and effective problem-solving to help ensure funding, organisational excellence, and ultimately environmental and social change.
PERSON SPECIFICATION FOR CHAIR
The ideal candidate will have proven knowledge/ skills/ experience in the following areas:
