Job description

Job purpose

Our employability programmes are designed to get young people aged 16-24 into jobs and apprenticeships.  The Employability Tutor will be responsible for the delivery of City Gateway’s Employability curriculum to ensure that they preparing young people for the world of work. This includes the planning and delivery of high quality teaching, learning and assessment to groups and individuals. The Tutor must enjoy teaching, be committed to ensuring that young adults achieve their qualification and have a passion to see the learners succeed. The post holder will work effectively with other tutors, coaches, managers and employers to plan effective interventions to ensure learners achieve and positively progress into a work placement, job or apprenticeship.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Prepare industry-focused quality schemes of work, lesson plans and materials to ensure that learners on vocational and traineeship provision progress into job-related outcome
  • Use initial & diagnostic assessments and Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) to effectively plan the learner’s individual learning journey
  • Plan and deliver engaging classes and workshops that inspire learners to achieve
  • Prepare learners effectively for assessments and exams
  • Undertake the role of Course Tutor: monitoring attendance, punctuality, achievement and other pastoral and monitoring duties
  • Work with the Head of Curriculum, teachers and employers to develop and revise the curriculum for the relevant subject areas ensuring that it is relevant, motivating and  meets the needs of learners, and  employers which meets employer’s needs
  • Ensure your curriculum design is flexible to allow employers to come and deliver training on areas such as: commercial awareness, team working, presentation skills, setting up a LinkedIn account
  • Liaise with the Examination Officer and other key staff to set up Functional Skills English examinations, ensuring that any special adjustments are in place
  • Maintain accurate and complete tutor records, the tracking, and monitoring of learner progress and development to ensure high accreditation pass rates and good retention
  • Manage learner behavior in the training room, and when on City Gateway premises and on other business – e.g. trips.
  • Attend course team meetings as required
  • Work closely with the Head of Curriculum and Quality Manager to ensure that teaching and learning is judged Good or Outstanding by Ofsted
  • Undertake a minimum of 30 hours Continuous Professional Development (CPD) per year
  • Organising, planning and escorting learners to attend industry events such as careers fairs, recruitment days, and employer insights
  • Liaise with the Business Development team to secure employer volunteers to ensure learners get advice on their CV,  role-play interview techniques and how to make a job application

Person Specification

Education/Qualification.

Essential: General post 16 education qualification (e.g. PTLLS, DTLLS, DET)

Desirable: PGCE or Cert Ed or QTLS; CAVA/IQA/A1; IAG Level 3

Proven Experience

Essential Experience of: 

  • Teaching employability and work related learning to young people.
  • Delivering programmes that meet employer’s needs and help young people job ready
  • Embedding the development of English, Maths, British Values into the curriculum.
  • Achieving “good” or above in lesson observations
  • Developing qualities like confidence, resilience and independence in young people.

Desirable Experience :

  • Experience working in marginalized communities where access to good quality jobs can be challenging
  • Track record of getting young people into work through work placements, jobs or apprenticeships

Skills & Abilities.

Essential: Ability to:

  • Produce excellent motivating teaching and learning which inspires young people.
  • Build the knowledge and cultural capital that young people need in order to support future learning and/or employment
  • Produce required supporting documentation to a good standard (Schemes of Work, Lesson plans etc)
  • Ability to plan to meet accredited and non-accredited outcomes
  • Ability to act as a course tutor and ensure that the learner’s journey is effectively tracked
  • Ability to work with the rest of the Education team and Progression Coaches to raise standards of attendance, achievement and progression.
  • Ability and confidence managing challenging behaviour

Skilled in:

  • Using email and Microsoft Office.

Desirable: 

  • An interest in how learning can be supported and made more interesting  by technology
  • Knowledge  of the local training and job market
  • Experience of Ofsted inspections
  • Tailouring programmes to specific employer’s needs to increase job outcomes for learners
