Job description

Standing Voice (SV) is an international human rights NGO established in 2013 to promote the social inclusion of people in Sub-Saharan Africa who have albinism - a genetically inherited condition resulting in melanin deficiency.

We are looking for a dynamic and driven person to join our team as Finance Officer in the UK office. This is an exciting and challenging role in a creative and focused working environment, within  an organisation with multiple programmes and funding streams.

This position suits an ambitious professional with the right skills and confidence to contribute to organisational financial planning and strategy.

The successful candidate will be tasked with ensuring the charity’s financial records are up to date, and undertaking regular financial analysis to inform organisational strategy at Standing Voice. In addition, the Finance Officer will assist management with communicating with funders and partners on financial matters. The successful candidate will also correspond regularly with our Tanzania and Malawi teams to ensure all financial records are accurate and up-to-date, and to resolve any complications as required.

Suitable candidates will demonstrate a high level of organisation and accuracy in their work; experience of engaging with non-finance departments to achieve targets; excellent communication skills (and ability to communicate financial details clearly and concisely when required); a strong motivation for career development and learning; and a genuine interest in using their financial skills to impact positively on the lives of the individuals we work with. Though travel commitments will not be highly frequent, occasional travel to Africa - and to funder offices around the world - may be required.

Standing Voice is the leading force for change promoting people with albinism’s right to full participation in society and protected well-being across Africa. Joining our team as Finance Officer offers a chance to become involved in this cause as a key person with direct impact on SV’s work and beneficiary lives more broadly. In contrast to many finance roles, the successful candidate would have the opportunity to travel and contribute to meetings with beneficiaries, our Tanzanian team, funders and partners.

This role should appeal to those with experience in a similar role, a commitment to using that expertise to achieve a positive and lasting social impact, and a drive for professional development.

SV achieves a high level of functionality through efficient teamwork and mutual respect among team members. Our vision is of a better world for people with albinism.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Take responsibility for maintaining SV’s financial records and accounts

  • Ensure SV’s accounts in Sage are properly organised to enable swift and accurate report generation

  • Generate finance reports for the management team as and when required

  • Correspond with SV’s accountants on accounting matters

  • Be the first point of contact at SV for all internal and external finance queries

  • Lead on all aspects of Standing Voice’s accounts reconciliation

  • Be involved in financial planning with management

  • Assist programme staff in generating project budgets for funding opportunities and implementation

  • Assist with the compilation of finance reports for funders

  • Lead on the development of SV’s annual budgets

  • Provide financial information and guidance to colleagues

  • Attend meetings with SV’s global funders and partners

  • Be involved in staff and volunteer recruitment processes

  • Conduct financial transactions within required timeframes

  • Process staff payments and work with SV’s accountants to oversee payroll

  • Work with SV’s accountants and management staff to generate and check annual accounts for submission to the Charity Commission

  • Complete and submit Gift Aid claims to HMRC

  • Inform the management team’s financial decisions

  • Generate invoices when required

  • Generate donation receipts when required

  • Retrieve delayed payments from third parties

  • Other finance duties delegated by the Executive Director or Director of Development

Other responsibilities will consist of:

  • Occasional international travel to meet colleagues, partners and funders

  • Act at all times with complete transparency and integrity

  • Stay abreast of Standing Voice project activity

  • Stay abreast of the issues Standing Voice tackles

Top essential attributes / person specification:

  • Bookkeeping or Accountancy qualification to an intermediary level, or equivalent

  • Knowledge of financial accounting software packages and tools

  • Working in a related position for 2 years minimum

  • Highly organised with an ability to manage multiple work streams

  • Excellent IT skills including proficient use of Microsoft Office

  • Good communication skills both written and verbal

  • Be dynamic and motivated to develop professionally
