Foundation Governor Volunteer Roles
Sense College East is a specialist Further Education (FE) college, supporting students between 16-25, who have a wide range of disabilities. We aim to prepare young people to be as independent as possible and help them to achieve their long term goals. We offer different pathways to help students gain the skills, experience, knowledge and confidence to achieve these goals.
Sense College East has 8 locations in the East of England, East Midlands and West Midlands:
- Aldeby, Suffolk
- Bedford, Bedfordshire
- Dereham, Norfolk
- Knapwell, Cambridgeshire
- Peterborough, Cambridgeshire

- Touchbase Pears, Birmingham

Candidates interested in the role of Lay Governor at college must be able to demonstrate commitment to Safeguarding, Strategic leadership and a passion to Further Education particularly Specialist Education. A understanding of issues facing the post 16 specialist education sector would be desirable. If you feel you have the ability to make a positive contribution to meetings and provide constructive challenge to support senior managers at the college we would love to hear from you. We anticipate that the successful candidates will need to commit a minimum of 4 half days per term to the role in relation to meetings and preparation. The ability to attend other ad-hoc college events and visits would also be very welcomed.
This is a primarily virtual role, with all meetings taking place remotely, and an expectation of travelling to college sites once a term.
The role of members of the Governing Body is to provide strategic leadership, support and constructive challenge to the college senior management team to ensure that Sense College provides an excellent education experience for all students. The Governors will work with the college senior management to ensure the college offers a broad based curriculum to maximise the teaching and learning experiences of all its students, with demonstrable outcomes. Sense College East Lay Governors will attend 3 full committee meetings a year, plus 3 extra meetings for their chosen sub-committee. Meetings last from 90 minutes for sub-committees and 2 hours 30 minutes for the full committee, Lay Governors will come prepared and engaged, having done the reading the prior and ready to ask any questions they may have. Governors of Sense College have a varied role encompassing a range of duties. Much of this is undertaken through participation in the full Governing Body meetings and Sense College sub-committees according to a governor`s experience and skillset, and through college visits.
Some examples of governor duties are below, noting that these are not exclusive:
- Reviewing, approving and monitoring the implementation of the Sense College 2022-2025 Strategic Plan
- Approving the final Sense College Annual Self-Assessment Report (SAR)
- Reviewing and monitoring progress and outcomes from the Sense College Quality Improvement Plan (QuIP)
- Reviewing students’ progress and achievements through a range of products i.e. case studies, reports and visits to Sense College
- Reviewing college data against Key Performance Indicators and dashboards.
- Participating in Ofsted inspection meetings on governance to support Sense College and the college senior management team
- Monitoring implementation of safeguarding (SfG) procedures, keeping updated with current SfG legislation and governors Prevent responsibilities
- Monitoring college budget performance with the emphasis on new students referrals funded through the Education and Skills Funding Agency
- Attending and participating in governor training events, student celebrations and college visits

We are looking for a trustee with a background in either Primary or Secondary Education to support on our anti-racism intiatives.
What will you be doing?
Every Future Foundation is seeking a dedicated Trustee with a background in education and schooling to contribute invaluable insights and expertise to our organization. As a Trustee, you will:
- Play a pivotal role in shaping our new programmes aimed at working closely with school staff to implement comprehensive anti-racism initiatives.
- Your firsthand experience as an educator will be instrumental in supporting the development of whole-school anti-racism programmes, ensuring they are tailored to the needs and realities of educational settings.
- You will serve as a vital link between Every Future Foundation and the education sector, offering invaluable perspectives from the standpoint of school staff, teachers, and governors. Acting as a critical friend, you will provide constructive feedback and guidance on our school-based programmes, ensuring they remain relevant, effective, and impactful.
Other duties include:
- Attend 6 x 1-hour trustee meetings per year, these are usually held on zoom.
- Attending ad-hoc meetings which may be more regular when we are developing new programmes or modules.
What are we looking for?
- Extensive experience in the education sector, preferably as a teacher, school staff member, or education administrator.
- In-depth understanding of school dynamics, policies, and procedures, including familiarity with the roles of teachers, staff, and governors.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement educational programmes or initiatives, with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with school stakeholders and serve as a liaison between Every Future Foundation and the education community.

KidsAid is a charity supporting children affected by trauma. We seek a Vice Chair to assist the Chair in providing leadership to the board, to ensure it operates within its charitable objectives, and with a clear strategic direction.
What will you be doing?
KidsAid is a child-centred charity. We focus on healing and empowerment for children affected by abuse, family breakdown, illness, and bereavement through to anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide.
The Vice Chair role includes oversight of a Theory of Change approach by the board, incorporating the responsibilities described below:1) Identify a Theory of Change approach and ensure board understanding, agreement and commitment.2) Assist the board to exercise oversight of the process, are engaged throughout, and support the decisions made.3) Ensure that Theory of Change is embedded within the organisation’s culture and practice from inception, throughout implementation, and informs strategic decisions.4) Ensure engagement with a wide range of perspectives to scrutinise how these can most effectively contribute towards change.5) In collaboration with the CEO, produce a Theory of Change output to reflect the critical thinking which has challenged KidsAid’s values, beliefs, and purpose.6) Assist the Chair in:
- Providing leadership to the charity and the board.
- Ensuring that Trustees fulfil their duties and responsibilities for effective governance.
- Ensuring board meetings are pre-planned and conducted effectively.
- Working with the Chair and CEO to ensure that sub-committees make effective and timely recommendations to the Board.
- Leading any sub-committees, teams, or working groups which may be created by the board.
- Reviewing the performance of the board, assisting with the appraisal of trustee performance, and leading on the appraisal of the Chair’s performance.
- The recruitment of new trustees.
- Representing the charity externally when the chair is unable to do so.
What are we looking for?
Person Specification
- At least three years’ experience at board level on a charity board, board of governors, or similar organisation. (E)
