Job description

Head of People

Centrepoint is the leading UK charity supporting homelessness of young people.

The Head of People is a senior leadership role reporting into the Director of People, Property and Independent Living, who in turn reports into the CEO. The role is responsible for overseeing the HR team and the Skills Development & Volunteering team. Both of those teams are headed up by a manager-level position managing the day-to-day operation for their areas. The Head of People role is therefore focused the more strategic components of the people and organisational development agenda, with accountability for providing direction and ensuring the overall success of the teams beneath.

The Head of People is expected to:

  • Focus the HR, Skill Development (Learning) & Volunteering teams on the charity's mission to enable young people to have a job and a home
  • Promote the charity as, and enable it to be an employer of choice, and the leading homelessness organisation to work within the UK
  • Be accountable for the ongoing evolution and implementation of the charity’s People Strategy
  • Be a leader and adviser in all HR matters in an operating environment that is changing rapidly, being risk-intelligent in balancing effectively the need to protect the charity’s reputation on the one hand, with the need for enterprise, energy and innovation on the other hand
  • Position the HR and Skills Development & Volunteering teams as services to the organisation that support and enable leaders and their team members to be engaged and inspired to perform at their best
  • Align all organisational initiatives, frameworks, policies and practices to support the delivery of the charity’s strategy and to reinforce the new values-based and inclusive culture that Centrepoint has been developing
  • Work with the charity’s Senior Executive Team to facilitate building a resilient, caring, equitable and inclusive organisation, where every team member can thrive
  • Develop the organisation and coach leaders to build their own leadership capability so the charity can achieve current and future goals

You will have:

  • A CIPD qualification (or equivalent qualification) or equivalent experience
  • Substantial experience of managing a people function
  • Extensive knowledge of HR policy and employment legislation
  • Experience of working effectively with staff at all levels, including with the Senior Executive Team / Board members
  • Proven ability to think and act strategically to bring about business improvement
  • Previous experience leading on people/HR project work
  • Previous experience working within a people/HR function within the NFP sector
